SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH: Brought to you by BetterCreditCards.com

Do you ever catch yourself scrolling through your phone, only to realize that you should be paying more attention to your children? Of course. It happens. Well, here’s a little something to remember: According to a study, parents who stare at their screens instead of talking to their kids could be hindering their children’s language development. The findings, published in the academic journal Frontiers in Developmental Psychology, show that parents who used screens more had children who also used screens more — and those children had lower aptitude in grammar and vocabulary. The research was carried out on parents of 421 Estonian children between the ages of 2 ½ and 4. One expert said the results make sense, because verbal interactions with parents are one of the main ways children learn language.

While no one can deny the effectiveness of the recent wave of weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy, the holy grail would still be a safe, effective pill that melts away pounds without the need for injections or invasive procedures. And a new drug called amycretin could be just that. Unveiled at the meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Madrid, “amycretin” is a once-a-day tablet that mimics 2 crucial appetite-regulating hormones. In trials, participants taking the highest does of amycretin experienced an impressive average weight loss of 13.1% over a 12-week period. To put this in perspective, a 200-pound (91kg) person could lose over 26 pounds (12kg) in just 3 months.

Is Ryan Reynolds’ next big purchase going to be a Welsh cricket team? He and his showbiz pal Rob McElhenney have “made contact” over the possibility of buying a stake in Welsh Fire, a Cardiff-based cricket franchise. Dan Cherry – the chief executive of Glamorgan County Cricket Club, which has strong links to the franchise, told the BBC: “It is a feasible option.” According to him, “we’re in the process (of selling) and…that they’ll certainly be included in any process that we’ve got going forward.” Reynolds and McElhenney became the co-chairs of the Welsh soccer team Wrexham A.F.C. in 2020.

Survivor 47 is about to crash on our shores and according to host Jeff Probst, the upcoming season is “impossible to contain.” He said to TV Line: “Each season of Survivor is influenced by the previous season, so the moves and strategies employed in Survivor 46 will definitely impact Survivor 47.” This year’s cast includes “Pod Save America” co-host Jon Lovett, plus an ER doctor, a nurse, a pilot, a flight attendant and more, and Probst promises “big personalities with very clear agendas of how they want to play.” He even compares this season to HBO’s Game of Thrones, saying: “The throne is never secure and the crown is always up for grabs.” Survivor Season 27 debuts tonight on CBS.

SCOOP OF THE DAY: Brought to you by BetterCreditCards.com

Jennifer Lopez said in an interview that she’s not a diva.

It’s not news to anyone, but for all but the most disciplined of shoppers, it’s nearly impossible to leave a Costco without spending at least a few hundred bucks. You know how it goes: You pop in to pick up a few specific items, and end up leaving with a cart full of bulk items and a long receipt – and grab a sausage on the way out. And now we know exactly how much money the average shopper spends at Costco – per minute. According to a new report from business news site Morning Brew and @maxinomicsmb, a YouTube channel that explores spending habits, from the minute they walk into a Costco, to the second they leave, a shoppers will spend about $1.75 per minute. The report says that the average person spends about 37 minutes wandering around the bulk warehouse store, which means the average shopper spends about $64.75. But people in the comments section said they spend WAY more than 37 minutes there, with one joking that they “spend 37 minutes in each aisle.” Another said their family spends “at least 1.5-2 hours” in the store, and if those estimates were applied, that would equal a bill of about $210.

WEIRD NEWS: Brought to you by WeirdGiftOfTheDay.com

A California man discovered he has been mistakenly paying his neighbor’s power bill for up to 18 years. Ken Wilson, who has lived in the same apartment since 2006, said he recently noticed his Pacific Gas and Electric bill was going up, so he attempted to reduce his energy usage. That didn’t help, so he contacted the utility. An employee came to examine the meter and discovered the company had been charging him for the unit next door, instead of his own place, and may have been doing so for 18 years. PG&E said in a statement: “We acknowledge an error occurred in this instance, and we are fully committed to rectifying the situation.”

A UPS driver who rescued a grandmother, now considers her ‘family’. Raheem Cooper was passing through his normal route in Valdosta GA when he saw an elderly woman collapsed on her driveway. After calling 911, Cooper stayed with the woman, all the while calling her ‘grandmother.’ The woman was taken to hospital where emergency brain surgery was performed. According to Coble’s granddaughter, “Five days after the surgery, she hadn’t talked at all. And when he came into the room, she brightened up and actually pushed herself up and gave him a hug.” Cooper also started a GoFundMe to assist family members visiting from far away, and brings her treats each week to the hospital, where she is recovering.
