THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!
Dear John
I went to my parents for a few weeks. My dad was in the hospital. So I hadn't seen my girlfriend for several weeks. We agreed to have a romantic date night when I got back in town on Sunday. After a great meal and a movie, it was time for fun time. She told me to lay on the bed because she had a surprise for me. Minutes later she came strutting into the bedroom in some amazing lingerie. I complimented her on how great she looked and said that I was flattered that she went and got some new lingerie for me. She said, "Oh, I've had this for years." Years? It turns out her old boyfriend bought it for her. They were together for three years and broke up about a year ago. I wasn't happy and told her I wasn't in the mood anymore. We got in a fight. I left and she thanked me for ruining the night. Am I the only guy who would be put off by their girlfriend wearing lingerie that a former boyfriend bought them?
Signed
Baffled Boyfriend

There is no connection between cellphone use and brain cancer, according a review into the potential risks of cellphone radiation commissioned by the World Health Organization. The review involved 11 experts from 10 countries going over several decades of scientific research to reach their conclusion. It has been a hot topic for health experts and regulators, because mobile phones are often held against the head during use. And they emit radio waves, leading to the idea that cell phones might cause brain cancer. The researchers say their conclusion stands, even among people who spend “all day” on their cellphone

The
idea that aliens may have visited the Earth is becoming more popular.
About one-fifth of UK citizens believe Earth has been visited by ETs,
and 7% believe they have actually seen a UFO. The figures are even
higher in the US. Twenty-four percent of Americans say they have seen
a UFO. And belief in a cover-up is even higher. In 2019, a poll found
that a staggering 68% of Americans believed “the US government
knows more about UFOs than it is telling”.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” will join “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, “Late Show With Stephen Colbert”, and “Late Night With Seth Meyers” in scaling back to 4 nights of originals a week starting this season. The move is believed to be driven by cost-cutting, which also was behind the decision to drop Late Night’s house band this summer. The Tonight Show had been doing original episodes Monday-Friday during the regular season, while switching to Monday-Thursday during the summer. The off-season schedule will now carry over to the rest of the year.

A study has found that when you cry, it actually does make you feel better
There’s nothing quite like the unique misery that is being a parent to a child with a cold. Not only is your child uncomfortable and probably not sleeping properly, but you have to make alternate care arrangements, possibly alter your work schedule, and on top of that, look after a needy, and let’s face it, sometimes whiny child. Plus, you have to pick a lot of Kleenexes up off the floor. And that’s why it’s awesome that a group of UK researchers say they can help you shorten your child’s cold by 2 days – AND reduce the likelihood that it is passed on to the rest of the family. Not only that, doing so is “extremely cheap and simple”. In their study, they taught parents how to make and apply salt water drops to their children’s nose. Three drops were administered to each nostril at least 4 times a day until the young children got better. Other kids were given typical cold medications. They found that children using salt water nose drops had cold symptoms for an average of 6 days, while “those with usual care had symptoms for 8 days.” The children receiving salt water nose drops also needed fewer medicines during their illness. What’s more, just 46% of kids using nose drops had family members catch the child’s cold, versus 61% of the other households. This treatment has the potential to be applied globally, giving parents a safe and effective way to limit the impact of colds on families, and to reduce the financial burden this condition creates.

Heinz has been toying with the idea of selling something called “ketchup sprinkles”. And while at this point, it’s not an actual “real product” that you can buy, it makes one wonder if it might become one someday. Apparently mindful of the fact that the Dutch love to dip French Fries in their beloved mayonnaise, Heinz has been engaging in some clever marketing for the novelty idea of ketchup sprinkles, in much the same way that you may have heard of when McDonald’s announced “French Fry Perfume” in Japan. In an effort to encourage Dutch people to try ketchup as a French fry dip, Heinz turned its ketchup into what is apparently the only thing they love more than mayo: Sprinkles. The company is marketing a very limited supply of ketchup “hagelslag,” which are typically chocolate sprinkles that Dutch people love to put on bread. It was presented in a video, calling it the “most Dutch product we’ve ever made”. The clip shows a transparent ketchup bottle, filled with red sprinkles, and marked “Heinz Hagelchup”. The company admits the campaign is more a stunt than an attempt to market a new product, saying they just want to make people smile. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/5ev28dvy

TOP REALITY TV SHOWS OF ALL-TIME:
Based on consensus picks by credible review sites…
1. “Survivor” (since 2000): Became an international phenomenon in its first season, and inspired different versions around the world. (Plus, it had Rudy!)
2. “The Amazing Race” (since 2001): It’s what we watch wishing we had the guts to be a part of it. It has received 15 Emmys, 26 other awards, and 138 nominations.
3. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (since 2009): Loosely based on “America’s Next Top Model”, it has won 9 Emmys. And in addition to the show’s success, it makes millions from the live shows and its annual “DragCon”.
4.
“American Idol” (since 2002, with a pause 2016-18): It’s simply
the dominant TV show of its era. Plus, it had Simon Cowell! (I
thought this show would be #1 – then I remembered Lee DeWyze!)
5.
“The Real World” (1992-2017): It is the first reality TV show to
start the trend carried on by shows like “Big Brother” and
“Survivor.” The first few seasons were a fascinating social
experiment that changed TV forever.
