THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John

I have a weird situation possibly happening. Twenty years ago, when I was in high school I dated a girl. We were pretty sure we were going to get married, but when I left for college, she began dating my younger brother. He is her age. They ended up getting married and have three kids together. I was very happy for them and our families are close. I married my college sweetheart and we had two kids. Sadly, my wife passed away in 2019 after she battled cancer for a few years. So, here is where things get a little weird. My brother and his wife separated last year. A month ago they got divorced. I've stayed in touch with both of them because our kids are cousins and they get along great. Last week when I was picking up my boys I had a conversation with my brothers ex-wife. She was suggesting that we get back together. We've always gotten along. I have never stopped loving her, but she is my former sister-in-law now. There just seems to be something weird about this. I told her I'm not ready to date anyone right now, but I offered to hang out with her and the kids for some fun family nights. I have not talked to my brother about any of this. He always told me that his wife was more in love with me than with him. I'm not sure how he would feel about us dating. Should I talk to him? Is this all weird to you too?

Signed

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst say they have come up with an innovative way to protect yourself from the sweaty, uncomfortable, even health-endangering experience of being outside during a heat wave: clothes that physically cool down the body. In their quest to develop a cooler fabric, they coated fabric tiles with calcium carbonate – the main component in limestone and chalk. The coating was able to both reflect the sun’s energy back into the atmosphere, and allow the wearer’s natural body heat to escape. During tests in scorching summer heat, they found it reduced the temperature underneath clothes by up to 8°F (4.5°C) compared to the air, and by up to 15° (8.5°C) compared to untreated fabrics.

According to a new survey, about 1 in 10 wish they gave their kid a different name. The poll of 450 parents by BabyCenter, found that 15% of them actually now prefer to address their child by their middle name. 20% feel their child’s name is too long, so they call them by a nickname. The good news: While 21% of moms said they regretted their child’s name in the first year, only 6% had doubts about it after that. Oh, and 6% were so put off by the name they gave their child that they had it legally changed.

Jeff Bridges had one name in mind that he wanted to be called when he became a granddad, but it didn’t turn out exactly how he imagined. On “Good Morning America”, the “Big Lebowski” star was asked about the name his grandkids call him, to which he responded: “I wanted them to call me Dude Pa, but they’ve shortened that down to just ‘Dudie’”. He added: “I hope it’s Howdy Doody and not dog doody! Anyway, I’m Dudie, man!”

Ricky Gervais has lost a battle to demolish his flood-prone mansion in London. “The Office” creator had applied to build a 4-bedroom, neo-classical home on the site of his existing property beside the River Thames, which has been hit by flooding at least 5 times since 1947, so he could replace it with a new £5 million house. But authorities denied consent for his project, claiming the comic’s application did not meet local and national planning guidelines. Gervais has a huge property portfolio, including a £15 million mansion with 9 bedrooms, spa and tennis court in north London.

It looks like Emily’s visa has been extended. Netflix has renewed “Emily in Paris” for a 5th season after the debut of Season 4 Part 2 last week. The streamer made the announcement with a video of star Lily Collins with an espresso mug and pastry, sitting on a balcony overlooking Italy. Taking a sip, and revealing the number 5 on the bottom of the cup, she says: “There’s no place like Rome.” Moving to Italy from France, Season 4 of “Emily in Paris”, which has inspired fashion, tourism and memes — debuted at #1 on the Netflix Global Top 10 with almost 20 million views in its first 4 days. You don’t hear of THIS happening very often: A company announces record profits – then immediately outlines plans to decrease its profits by going green. But that’s exactly what’s been happening with Lego. Lego profits increased 26% over the first half of the year to $1.2 billion, while revenue jumped 13% to nearly $5 billion. Now, it is planning for increased costs in the future as it pledges to make all products from renewable and recycled materials by 2032. Objectives include switching out raw virgin plastic with renewable resin, which comes from biowaste like cooking oil, and is 40-60% more expensive than plastic made from crude oil. It’s Lego’s latest attempt to make its iconic bricks without the use of fossil fuels. Thanks to the recent profit boom, CEO Niels Christiansen said the company will absorb all cost increases stemming from these changes, instead of passing them on to consumers.

WEIRD NEWS: Brought to you by WeirdGiftOfTheDay.com

An Arizona resident recently removed a Lego piece from their nose after nearly 3 decades. Andi Norton, who also goes by the name Ben Havoc, is 32 years old, and explained in a social media post how they shoved the Lego “dot” piece up their nose back in the 1990s — when they were about 6, and didn’t realize that it never came out. Andi explained that for years they had endured “multiple breathing issues” that included asthma, as well as a recent diagnosis of Obstructive sleep apnea, until recently blowing their nose while in the shower. Andi, who identifies as they/them said: “I can breathe out of this side of my nose now, and it’s fantastic.” They captioned the story: “I can smell colors now.” (The only downside? As soon as it hit the shower floor, Andi accidentally stepped on it!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2vny7yy5
