A new study says that if you have a sweet tooth, it may be genetic – and your DNA could be encouraging you to eat more. An international team of researchers found that a genetic variation in our ability to digest certain sugars may influence how much we like sweet foods — and how much we consume. The scientists determined that the gene known as ‘sucrose-isomaltase plays a key role in breaking down sucrose (table sugar). Those with mutations in that gene have difficulty breaking down sucrose. And in conducting tests on 140,000 people, they found that those who couldn’t digest sucrose consumed significantly fewer sucrose-rich foods. The results were published in the journal Gastroenterology.

Keanu Reeves’ iconic bullet-dodging backbend in “The Matrix” has topped a poll of the best cinematic stunts of all time. 2,000 film buffs crowned ‘Neo’s’ impressive technique seen in the 1999 action sci-fi blockbuster the winner — topping Tom Cruise’s death-defying performance hanging from a plane in 2015’s “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”. The breathtaking car skydive sequence from “Fast and Furious 7” came third. In 4th and 5th, respectively were stunts in the movies “Ben-Hur” and “Skyfall.”

Apple TV+ won’t release its Jon Hamm-led drama “Your Friends & Neighbors” for several months, but it’s already set to get going on a second season. The streamer has renewed the show for season 2, while also setting a premiere date and offering up a first look at the inaugural run. The 9-episode first season of Your Friends & Neighbors will premiere April 11. Hamm stars as ‘Andrew “Coop” Cooper’, a hedge fund manager who’s been fired from his job and recently divorced, and resorts to stealing from the homes of his neighbors. The series also stars Amanda Peet and Olivia Munn.

Dana Carvey isn’t done with his return to “Saturday Night Live”, but he’s probably packing in the Elon Musk impression for now. He has an incredible accent — South Africa via Canada, via Pennsylvania…it’s a little bit of Australian in there, a little bit of British, but he’s not totally that.” Musk declared the show has been “dying slowly for years” after Carvey impersonated him in a post-election cold open.

When it comes to holiday spending, shoppers aren’t saying they intend to hold back this year, but they do plan to take a more “deliberate” approach to the purchases they make. A new study of 2,000 consumers in the US who celebrate a winter holiday reveals the growing trend of “slow shopping”. Nearly 3 in 4 respondents said slow shopping would be a good descriptor of how they are handling things this holiday season. Three in 5 indicated they’re starting earlier than usual, and making more frequent shopping trips and picking up fewer gifts at a time. The Talker Research poll found that more than half of those who have embraced the slow shopping trend are doing so to ensure they are only buying the items they truly want. Similarly, 51% said they’re using slow shopping in order to take advantage of more deals and promotions. And by the way, 68% said they plan to spend the same or more than they did last year.

It grows in dry and barren desert areas, and is processed by air-drying after harvesting. Because of its appearance, it is commonly known as the “hair vegetable”. Fa Cai is usually served as black vermicelli in broths and soups, but the dark treat recently went viral as a new street snack – that makes the consumer look as though they are eating human hair. According to a new study, people are more bored than ever before – and in spite of the fact that we have more entertainment options at our fingertips than ever before, digital media is to blame. The data, published by Communications Psychology in a study named “People Are Increasingly Bored in Our Digital Age”, showed that there’s a higher rate of people reporting experiences of boredom. In particular, adolescents and college students are feeling bored more frequently since 2009. The researchers believe that digital media is a major reason for the uptick in boredom, because it creates “great stimulation”, and thereby makes people uninterested in activities that provide less stimulation, like reading a book or attending a lecture. They also argue that digital media fragments our attention, meaning people have a harder time focusing on one activity. And we all know that our smartphones create a ton of distractions, which can definitely disrupt our focus. The researchers said that earlier studies have proven that frequent interruptions decrease satisfaction and people’s ability to engage in one task, which leads to increased boredom.

In a survival situation, if you were to drink seawater, it would rapidly dehydrate you and soon lead to your death. However, it is vastly less harmful to eat frozen seawater. This is because it contains a tenth of the amount of salt in its liquid form due to the fact that the salt is separated from the water when freezing as it does not fit into the crystalline structure of ice.

The insider said that Gaga even had meetings with Daldry to flesh out the character, and she was cast in the role, but it “fell through”. Mendes was rumored to star as ‘Fiyero’ in the film, a role ultimately played by Jonathan Bailey. Daldry, who was announced as the film’s director in 2016, exited the project in 2020 due to scheduling conflicts.

THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John

I have a question... I have a really great friend that I love to death and value his friendship and his experience and his family! There's an issue with communication, however. Specifically with texting and I feel like it's a common courtesy or etiquette issue at this point. We, as a society have been texting for what, 30+ years at this point? In my mind, I feel like there should not be a question of where the other party went. If there's a back-and-forth and then the other party just vanishes for hours without a word. I try to communicate if I get busy or am on a work call, or have to go drive somewhere and it's mid-conversation, I'll say, hang on I gotta _____ be back in a bit. This friend of mine, doesn't have that "gene". He just vanishes and sometimes for hours or days, mid-conversation. Or, I'll ask a question that's timely or needs to be answered soon, and nothing..... for hours. I started teasing him and texting things like #superbusychatlater to sort of prompt him to at least say something, even if it's "I can't talk right now, in a meeting" or whatever. Again, this friend is awesome and outside of this issue, he's an amazing dude and a huge inspiration to me in a lot of ways. I'm just getting really annoyed and fed up about this texting situation. What would you advise? Calling really isn't an alternative, he'd likely never answer and who calls anymore?

Guys, be warned. It turns out that you need a woman a lot more than they need men, when it comes to finding happiness. A pair of University of Toronto psychologists analyzed data from nearly 6,000 single adults from 10 studies, and found that un-partnered girls are happier than their guy counterparts in every measurement. Women were found to be happier being on their own, less likely to want a significant other, more sexually satisfied — and more content overall. The researchers found that the reason that women are happier being single is that they are more likely to have supportive platonic relationships. In addition, romantic relationships are less beneficial for women, because they’re more likely to take on a larger share of household duties. That means single men “have more to gain from partnering than do single women.” Studies in the past have shown that women also tend to enjoy their solitude more than men.

The “Hawkeye” star made a tidy profit on the sale of the lavish 6-bedroom, 9-bathroom pad, which he purchased in 2012 for $4 million. The outlet says Renner had also invested about $5.5 million into renovations on the property located near Laurel Canyon. He listed the home for $13 million in August, and Lizzo reportedly bought it at the end of October. With a recording studio on the roughly 9,000-square-foot lot, it seems like it could be a perfect spot for the singer.

When the munchies hit, what type of snack are you reaching for? According to new research, your answer might reveal a lot about your personality. An analysis of peoples’ snack choices by a team at Gettysburg college could explain why we tend to describe nice people as “sweet”. The researchers wrote that the association between agreeableness and the preference for a sweet taste is related to the fact that we use terms like “sweetie” and “honey” to refer to those we love. And this co-relation, where agreeableness was “significantly and positively” associated with sweet taste preferences. was found to be true among all test participants, including those from other cultures in China, Germany, and Mexico, in addition to the US. The team concluded: “People may resonate with experiences that ‘fit’ their personalities. Metaphors might be one way to examine this fit.”

If you’ve ever done something for someone around the house, then uttered the phrase “A thank you would be nice”, then you can relate. A simple “Thank you” might be more important than we think, say researchers at the University of Illinois. They found that feeling appreciated by family members isn’t just nice — it is scientifically linked to better relationships and better mental health. AND they found that gratitude from different family members can affect your relationships with them in different ways. According to the research, feeling appreciated by your romantic partner mainly improves relationship satisfaction, while receiving gratitude from your children helps reduce the stress of parenting. And it seems if you have teenagers in the house, their appreciation of what you do goes a long way in improving your mental health. Oh, and something to work on, guys: The research team also found that women in their study reported feeling less appreciated than men did — both by their romantic partners and by their older children.
