Today we visit with Washington Post columnist and best-selling author David Ignatius about his latest CIA thriller, THE PALADIN, which delivers an urgent warning about the dangers of “deep fakes”—the false narratives that intelligence operatives can now spin with alarming precision and aim at industries, individuals, and even entire governments in order to inflict lethal damage. In the competition to manipulate reality, the line between good actors and bad is increasingly blurred, and no one is immune to the reputational fallout. https://amzn.to/2ZPsHq0

They put the “bar” in salad bar! A Missouri supermarket is selling miniature liquor bottles instead of veggies at a serve-yourself salad station during the Coronavirus crisis, according to a viral tweet. “My grocery store has replaced the salad in the salad bar with…. liquor,” shopper Emily A. posted on Twitter, along with a photo of the boozy bar she says was found at a Dierbergs market. The image — which shows piles of 99-cent hard liquor bottles on one side of the station, along with beer on the other — drew cheers from pandemic-weary boozehounds on social media. “Best. Salad. Bar. Earth won't always have the same North Star. The North Star might seem like a fixed marker in the sky. However, what we now recognize as the North Star, Polaris, hasn't always been our guiding light—and it won't always be in the future. By the year 13,000 A.D., the star Vega will take its place, according to NASA. And by the year 26,000, Polaris will be right back where it was and return to its status as the North Star.

A heartbroken woman in China took revenge on her ex-boyfriend by dumping a ton of onions at his doorstep, apparently in a bid to make him cry as much as she did. According to the Daily Mail, the woman - identified only by her surname Zhao - was devastated after her boyfriend broke up with her. They had been together for over a year but the man reportedly cheated on her. Furious at this, Ms. Zhao decided to get 1,000 kgs, equivalent to 2,200 pounds, of onions delivered to his doorstep. She also sent instructions that the veggies were to be dumped on the offending ex's doorstep without contacting him. Photos and videos that have gone massively viral on Chinese social media platforms like Weibo show sacks of red onions being delivered to the ex's home in Zibo, eastern China. Along with the onions, Ms. Zhao also sent a note that read: “I've cried for three days, now it's your turn.” (https://bit.ly/2LMkSJp)

A Florida sheriff’s office employee reportedly hid a camera in his roommate’s bedroom to spy on her. Llewellyn Berkheiser III, a 28-year-old communication specialist for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, was busted Saturday after his roommate found a GoPro camera in a vent in her bedroom. Berkheiser’s roommate, who was not identified, told deputies she discovered the recording device Friday when she noticed she couldn’t see light in the vent from an adjoining kitchen that was usually visible. Berkheiser told the woman a maintenance man from their apartment complex possibly put the camera there, but the woman checked with building records and found that no employees had been in the apartment since March. He later admitted to putting the camera in the vent. Investigators also seized his camera, cellphone, and laptop. He was charged with one count of video voyeurism and has been relieved of his duties as internal and criminal investigations are underway. (https://bit.ly/2zvIgIx)

Yankees star Aaron Judge’s girlfriend Samantha Bracksieck was busted on “extreme DUI” charges in Arizona. 26-year-old Bracksieck was stopped around 11:50 p.m. on February 25th in Scottsdale after cops allegedly caught her driving a white 2017 Honda HR-V without the headlights on while going up to ten miles above the speed limit. When cops questioned her about the headlights, she said she hadn’t realized they were off. “I could smell a strong odor of an intoxicating beverage coming from inside the vehicle and from her breath as she spoke,” cops wrote in the report, adding that Bracksieck was slurring her words and had bloodshot eyes. Court records show Bracksieck was charged with “extreme DUI” for an alleged blood alcohol concentration level between .15 and .19, as well as a headlight violation and changing lanes in an unsafe manner. Bracksieck pleaded not guilty and her case is still pending. If convicted, she faces potential jail time and fines. (https://bit.ly/2WOS3lU)

Her revealing picture went viral after being taken by a patient at a hospital in Tula, 100 miles south of Moscow, who said there were 'no complaints' from his bedfellows. But hospital chiefs were not amused and punished the nurse for “non-compliance with the requirements for medical clothing.” The unnamed medic in her 20s said she was “too hot” wearing her nurses' uniform under the gown. She told her managers at Tula Regional Clinical Hospital that she did not realize the PPE she wore when treating coronavirus patients was so transparent. Despite this, the regional health ministry reported that “a disciplinary sanction was applied to the nurse of the infectious diseases department who violated uniform requirements.”

THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

I'm trying to decide if it makes sense for me to home school my children in the future. I know everyone kind of became a home schooler this year, but I think it may be a good idea for my family moving forward too. My husband disagrees. He thinks it makes more sense for our children to be with other children. I have just had so many thoughts about what the future of what public schools will look like. Am I being paranoid? Should I calm down like my husband says? Looking for other opinions on this topic.

A Florida Highway Patrol K-9 has scored his second drug bust this month – this time, sniffing out cocaine hidden in a taco dinner kit. According to the FHP, it was just before noon Wednesday when they pulled over a Nissan sedan. The driver was nervous, they said, and it didn’t take them long to figure out why. K-9 Titan checked out the car and alerted on an Old El Paso taco kit box. But instead of “bold” nacho cheese shells and taco sauce inside, troopers say there was a half-pound of cocaine. They also found $20,000 in cash. The driver, identified by FHP as 41-year-old Leon Robert King of Brooksville, was arrested on charges including drug possession and trafficking. Back on May 4th, troopers say Titan helped them nab two men driving with 25 pounds of marijuana crammed into trash bags in the back of their car during a Pasco County traffic stop. A Roseville, California man was arrested after a bizarre home invasion. Police say 28-year-old James Nunley II is suspected of sneaking into a family’s home and bathing himself before being discovered and later arrested. Although police are not releasing exactly which neighborhood it happened in, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office says the incident took place early Wednesday morning. At the time, the victims — a family — were putting their child to sleep. That’s when deputies believe Nunley entered the home through an unlocked door. Nunley then hid in the home for some time and, according to deputies, he used the family’s bathroom to bathe himself. Later, as he left that bathroom, he was caught by one of the victims and ran out of the house. But a short time later, he was caught by deputies and arrested for burglary and booked at the South Placer County Jail on a $110,000 bail. (https://bit.ly/360y0E6)

An Avon Park, Florida man was arrested on Wednesday, May 13th, after he was caught exposing himself to a woman, according to a news release from the Polk County Sheriff's Office. According to deputies, 32-year-old Justin Mosser has been charged with three counts of indecent exposure in public and two counts of committing a lewd act. The charges stem from two different incidents. On Monday, a woman reported to authorities that a man in a gray Mazda was trying to get her attention as she was driving on highway 60 around 8:00 a.m. When she looked over, she told deputies that the man's waist was completely exposed. Investigators used the description and photo evidence to identify the man as Mosser. Mosser told deputies that he does the lewd behavior often because he gets hot and “airs it out.” He admitted to detectives that he's done this sort of thing about four or five times to random women driving down the road. The Polk County, Florida Sheriff’s Office is trying to identify a man who was caught on surveillance video attacking another customer at a liquor store in Lakeland. The alleged attack happened at the Publix Liquor store around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. According to deputies, the attack stemmed from the suspect getting upset that the victim didn’t thank him for holding the door open. The victim, who is seen in video released by the sheriff’s office wearing a tan-colored hat, told deputies he walked into the liquor store while the suspect held the door open. The suspect, who is seen wearing a black and gray shirt and a black hat, then reportedly asked, “you don’t say ‘thank you’ to people who hold the door open for you?” The victim said he responded, saying “thank you.” After jawing back and forth, the suspect quickly approached the victim and started attacking. The surveillance video shows the suspect repeatedly hit the victim, knocking the man’s hat off. Anyone who recognizes the suspect is asked to call Detective Ervin with the sheriff’s office. In 2013, Animal Planet aired Mermaids: The New Evidence, a documentary—or rather, a mockumentary—that "proved" the half-human-half-fish beings exist. And while the program was fake, plenty of the 3.6 million viewers that watched believed that the fictional claims were real. In fact, so many people were fooled that the U.S. government's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released a statement on its website addressing the confusion, saying: "Mermaids: The New Evidence is just entertainment. A Taco Bell customer tossed a bottle filled with human waste through the restaurant’s drive-thru window, according to Georgia police who are seeking the public’s help in identifying the female suspect. Investigators report that the woman was involved in a late-night dispute with workers last Thursday at a Taco Bell in Augusta. During the 11:30 p.m. confrontation, the woman initially leaned out the rear passenger window of a silver sedan and tried to douse a worker with liquid she squeezed from a plastic bottle. The bottle, cops say, was filled with urine and feces. The suspect then threw the bottle into the Taco Bell via the drive-thru window, prompting the eatery’s closure for two hours so that employees could sanitize the premises. On second thought, it may have been a bad idea to post those surfing selfies. A Bronx man on vacation in Hawaii was arrested by agents with the state attorney general’s office Friday morning — and charged with violating the state’s strict rules that tourists observe a 14-day quarantine after arriving. The giveaway? Officials say the tourist, 23-year-old Tarique Peters, posted incriminating photos of himself sunning and carrying a surfboard around the beach on his Instagram account. Peters landed in Honolulu on Monday and is accused of immediately venturing off to see the sights. “He allegedly left his hotel room the day he arrived and traveled many places using public transportation,” the news release scolded. Local sleuths realized he’d Instagrammed a selfie from Bryant Park just a week ago, pegged him for a new arrival, and then ratted him out to authorities. Now his #newchallenge may be posting his $4,000 bail. (
