Who knew? It turns out that as the seasons change, so do our morals, according to a study. Researchers at the University of British Columbia determined that our feelings regarding certain moral principles fluctuate throughout the year, following a consistent seasonal pattern. The study’s author said that the analysis of survey responses from over 230,000 Americans found that “People’s endorsement of moral values that promote group cohesion and conformity is stronger in the spring and fall than it is in the summer and winter.” The seasonal swing was found to be more pronounced in areas with more extreme climate variations between seasons, and the researchers feel that anxiety, which peaks in spring and autumn, may play a crucial role. The thinking is that higher anxiety may drive people to seek comfort in the group norms and traditions” of society’s values.

During the Vietnam War, many men who were drafted into the military refused to serve for various reasons and instead left the country to avoid prosecution. Then, in 1977, newly inaugurated President Jimmy Carter fulfilled one of his campaign promises by pardoning draft dodgers. This allowed them to return home without the fear of being arrested. Despite this, only around half actually came back. Many of them assumed that they would still face ill-will from the American public and had already settled into places like Canada that welcomed the healthy and educated workforce.

Warner Bros. has released the official trailer for a new documentary about the life of Christopher Reeve. Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” follows the late actor’s rise to superstardom as ‘Superman’, as well as his fight to find a cure for spinal cord injuries after he became a quadriplegic following a horse riding accident. Reeve’s family participated in the making of the doc, which includes personal archive material. Super/Man will play in select theaters on Sept. 21, followed by an encore presentation on Reeve’s birthday, Sept. 25. A wider, traditional theatrical release has not yet been announced. Inside Out 2” has surpassed $1 billion at the international box office, becoming one of 12 movies — — and the only animated film — ever to do so. Though 55 films have grossed $1 billion globally (which includes domestic and international ticket sales), just a dozen have managed to hit that benchmark from overseas markets alone. Disney’s Pixar sequel is already the highest-grossing movie of the year with $1.65 billion globally, including $1.002 billion overseas and $646.3 million domestically. Weeks ago, “Inside Out 2” overtook “Frozen II” as the highest-grossing animated film in history.

A 4th season of “Ted Lasso” is looking more likely than ever. Warner Bros. Television has picked up the options for 3 of the show’s British stars: Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift and Brett Goldstein, meaning they are all set for a return. The studio is now expected to work with stars covered by SAG-AFTRA contracts who have expired options, including Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt, who plays ‘Coach Beard’. Insiders say that once the cast is committed, and season 4 is greenlighted, production could begin as soon as early 2025.

Who hasn’t had an annoying song stuck in their head, stuck on repeat like a broken record? This common phenomenon, known as an “earworm,” may actually be more than just an annoying side-effect of hearing a really-catchy song: A new study says earworms might help us develop a form of perfect pitch. University of California – Santa Cruz researchers tracked 30 volunteers for a week, prompting them at random times to record any music playing in their heads. They found that nearly half of the recorded earworms were in the exact same key as the original songs, and over two-thirds were very close to the original key, even though none of the volunteers believed they had perfect pitch. The scientists concluded: “A surprisingly large portion of the population has a type of automatic, hidden ‘perfect pitch’ ability”, which could lead to becoming a skilled singer.

There was a bizarre spin on the recent mayoral primary in Cheyenne, Wyoming. How? One of the 6 candidates on the ballot had pledged to let an AI chatbot run the city government, should he be elected. Librarian Victor Miller campaigned on the fact that he built a customized ChatGPT bot called VIC (Virtual Integrated Citizen), which he said could make more data-driven, unbiased decisions than any human, as leader of Cheyenne. But alas, it seems that the residents of Cheyenne will have to make do with human representation. Results show that Miller came 4th, with 327 votes. That’s more than 2,400 fewer than he needed to make November’s general election ballot.

If you’re looking to lose weight, researchers at the University of Illinois say they have cracked the code. They have developed what they call the “Individualized Diet Improvement Program”, which they say can cause 13% weight loss in a year. Sounds great! How does it work? Simply to increase your daily protein to 80 grams, and fiber to 20 grams. Oh, and cap your daily calorie count to 1,500 per day, which is far less than the 2,000-2,500 that is typically recommended. 41% of those following these guidelines were able to lose an average of 13% of their body weight by the one-year mark, without losing muscle, which often happens with rapid weight loss.

Cucumbers are in short supply in some countries, as supermarket chains report surging sales – probably because of viral recipes circulating on TikTok. Iceland in particular is experiencing a shortage as local farmers are struggling to keep up with booming business. And the lack of cucumbers is rotten news for those wanting to try one of the viral recipes circulated by TikTokker Logan Moffitt, nicknamed “The Cucumber Guy,” who shot to popularity this summer, thanks to his cucumber salad concoction. The 23-year-old Canadian creator sets up many of his vids by saying: “Sometimes you need to eat an entire cucumber,”, before launching into a simple kitchen tutorial. The Cucumber Guy has 5.6 million followers, and videos of his mouth-watering creations regularly surpass millions of views — and, as it seems, have led to a shortage of the key ingredient. It’s not uncommon for entertainment and sports celebs to release a line of perfumes and colognes. And the new scent is proving to be as popular as – well, mayo: It sold out within 90 minutes of going on sale. The mayo-scented cologne isn’t just something that Levis stamped his name on, either. He was involved in crafting it, too. And he’s probably familiar enough with the intricacies of mayo to be considered an expert: Rumor has it that he adds the stuff to his coffee for an extra kick.

THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John

My parents were married for 32 years. They recently went through a divorce. We spent the holidays together as a family last year. It was a little awkward, but it was also really nice to see them together again. I was hoping we would be able to do that again. I know my dad still loves my mom and I think he's hoping that they will be back together again someday. I went to a movie over the weekend and bumped into my mom on a date with one of my dad's friends. It was super weird. I think they tried to avoid me, but we still ended up having an awkward encounter after the movie. I could tell my mother was super embarrassed, but we were all very polite. I've not talked to her yet, but I wonder if my dad knows that she's dating his friend? I don't think it's my place to say anything to him, but do you think I should talk to my mom about it? I think she should let my dad know so he can also move on. It breaks my heart, but I also understand, she is a single amazing woman. I have no clue what all lead up to the divorce so I'm not sure if they were already talking before the divorce or not. I feel a heavy weight from all of this. What advice do you have for me?

Signed

A surprising new study reports that your home bathroom sink might harbor more potentially harmful bacteria than its hospital counterparts, raising concerns about home hygiene practices. The research, from Flinders University in Australia, examined biofilms – thin, slimy layers of microorganisms that adhere to surfaces – found on faucets and drains. It was found that residential sinks, particularly drains, harbored higher levels of certain concerning bacteria, including Legionella – the bacterium responsible for Legionnaires’ disease. The team says their finding highlights a potential blind spot in our approach to infection control.

Do your online homework: Follow your favorite brands and retailers on social media, and sign up for their email newsletters, to stay in the know about the latest deals. Sometimes, they even have exclusive sales for their followers.
