SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

For many people, summer actually starts long before the calendar says it does. A new survey of 5,000 people in the US found that 92% are already in “summer mode” by late May, although most admit they don’t feel completely prepared for the busy season ahead. Nearly half describe summer as the most energy-draining time of year, thanks to packed schedules, heat, vacations, and pressure to stay social and active. Many also struggle to maintain healthy habits during the warmer months, even though most say nutrition is a priority. To keep up, respondents say they’re focusing on hydration, lighter meals, and finding easier ways to eat healthy while juggling nonstop summer plans. The “real” start of summer is May 21, according to respondents.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

The ‘King of Pop’ biopic “Michael” has crossed $700 million globally, retaking the #1 spot at the box office, and staying on track to challenge “Oppenheimer’s” $975 million biopic record. After 2 weekends behind “The Devil Wears Prada 2”, Michael returned to the top with $26 million in its 4th weekend. Despite mixed or negative critical reviews, Michael’s audience score is about 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an A CinemaScore, indicating strong repeat viewings and fan-driven momentum.

Adam Driver may be known for leading acclaimed films like “BlacKkKlansman” and “Star Wars,” but his career first gained steam on TV in Lena Dunham‘s HBO series “Girls.” That show has been in the news recently as Dunham’s memoir, “Famesick,” revealed behind-the-scenes drama – including claims about Driver’s on-set behavior. Dunham alleges that Driver was at times “verbally aggressive” and once “hurled a chair at the wall” beside her. At the Cannes press conference for his latest film “Paper Tiger”, he was asked about the claims, and he got a few laughs when he responded: “I have no comment on any of that. I’m saving it all for my book.”

K-pop supergroup BTS, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Madonna and Columbian singer-songwriter Shakira will headline the first FIFA World Cup final halftime show in the tournament’s nearly 100-year-history. The World Cup final will take place July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. FIFA and nonprofit Global Citizen took to Instagram to announce the lineup for the Super Bowl-style halftime show. In the video, Coldplay’s Chris Martin is joined by a cast that featured Elmo, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Cookie Monster, who joked that BTS’ hit ‘Butter’ is both the monster’s favorite song — and cookie ingredient. SCOOP OF THE DAY

A report predicts robots will be everywhere by the year 2030.

The popular “V” hand gesture used in selfies for peace or victory could pose a surprising privacy risk in the age of high-resolution cameras and AI. Security experts are warning that close-up photos of fingers can sometimes reveal enough detail for advanced software to reconstruct fingerprint patterns, then use them to bypass online security measures. In a recent demonstration on a TV program, Chinese security expert Li Chang showed how images taken from short distances – especially selfies – may expose biometric data, with AI used to enhance blurry fingerprints into usable detail. However, experts note that successfully copying fingerprints still depends on image quality, lighting, and multiple photos, making real-world misuse more complex than it sounds.

WEIRD NEWS

Another new trend – because why not? Travelers lately are turning airport embarrassment into a group-bonding ritual by forcing friends and family to wear ridiculous T-shirts during trips. The trend, popular on TikTok and Instagram, features shirts with awkward, gross or absurd slogans meant to spark laughter – and public humiliation. Each member of a group buys an embarrassing shirt for another, with the rule that they have to wear them throughout the first day of travel, no matter what. One Minnesota mom wound up wearing a shirt reading “Ask me about my explosive diarrhea,” while another traveler sported “I Pooped Today!” Groups say the prank helps set a fun tone before vacations, with strangers and flight attendants often laughing along. But online safety experts warn some shirts can cross the line, especially if jokes are offensive or sexual, or reference weapons. And remember: once it’s on the internet, it’s probably there forever.

THE LIST

2026 SUMMER BLOCKBUSTERS:

Summer blockbuster season will officially begin when ‘Baby Yoda’ returns this Friday in “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu”. Here are the 12 movies coming to theaters this summer that are vying to be “THE” blockbuster of the year, à la “Jaws” or “E.T.” or “Independence Day”, etc…

✪ “The Mandalorian and Grogu” (May 22): Pedro Pascal’s masked interstellar gunfighter finally makes the jump from Disney+ to the big screen, again protecting everyone’s favorite Force-sensitive green child. Sigourney Weaver joins the galaxy far, far away as a former Rebel pilot leading the Adelphi Rangers, while Jeremy Allen White voices Jabba’s son, Rotta the Hutt. Yes, really.

✪ “Scary Movie 6” (June 5): 13 years later, the horror-spoof franchise rises from the dead with Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans all returning. Expect jokes targeting everything from “Longlegs” and “M3GAN” to modern horror tropes, social media panic, and probably at least one deeply inappropriate doll gag.

✪ “Masters of the Universe” (June 5): Following Barbie’s success, Mattel heads back to the toy box with a live-action “He-Man” epic starring Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam. Jared Leto plays Skeletor, Idris Elba is Man-at-Arms, and Camila Mendes steps in as Teela, as Eternia heads to war.

✪ “Disclosure Day” (June 12): Steven Spielberg returns to alien territory with a sci-fi thriller about a cybersecurity whistleblower uncovering evidence of extraterrestrial life – and a massive global cover-up. Josh O’Connor leads the cast alongside Emily Blunt, Colin Firth and Colman Domingo.

✪ “Toy Story 5” (June 19): Woody and Buzz reunite after their emotional split in “Toy Story 4”, this time facing off against modern technology threatening Bonnie’s childhood. Familiar favorites like Jessie, Rex, Hamm and Slinky Dog also return for Pixar’s latest nostalgia-powered adventure.

✪ “Supergirl” (June 26): Milly Alcock trades Westeros for the DC Universe as Superman’s cousin embarks on a revenge mission across space after her father’s murder. Jason Momoa also joins the franchise – not as Aquaman, but as the foul-mouthed alien mercenary Lobo.

✪ “Minions & Monsters” (July 1): The little yellow chaos agents head to 1920s Hollywood in this animated prequel, where they attempt to create their own monster movie, decades before the events of “Despicable Me”. As usual, destruction and gibberish-speaking will likely follow.

✪ “Moana” (July 10): Disney gives its beloved animated hit the live-action treatment, with newcomer Catherine Laga’aia starring as the adventurous Polynesian wayfinder. Dwayne Johnson is back as Maui, complete with magical tattoos, giant hook, and enough charisma to power an island.

✪ “The Odyssey” (July 17): Christopher Nolan tackles Homer’s legendary Greek epic in what promises to be one of the year’s biggest cinematic events. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o rounding out the massive cast.

✪ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” (July 31): Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker in a world that no longer remembers who he is, following the events of “No Way Home”. As the young superhero continues protecting New York anonymously, a dangerous new threat forces him back into the spotlight.

✪ “Coyote vs. Acme” (Aug. 28): After decades of exploding gadgets and failed Road Runner schemes, Wile E. Coyote finally sues the Acme Corporation for product liability. Will Forte plays the down-on-his-luck lawyer taking the case, while classic Looney Tunes characters cause cartoon chaos around him.
