THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!
Dear John,
I think my wife has a problem. She's been a stay at home mom for about two years. I'm excited the kids will be home this summer, it might actually help! She has been in charge of a fb group for our neighborhood. She's become the queen bee! She started by joining the group. She would casually check for posts in the neighborhood group, but this has has turned into an obsession. Now she is a moderator of the group and she's apparently pretty invested! Every day she's glued to her phone reading arguments between strangers, getting emotionally invested in neighborhood drama, and following every complaint, rumor, and suspicious vehicle sighting she can find. She will spend hours on this “hobby” each day. She knows many of the neighbors by the nicknames they were given by other people in the group. We were at a restaurant last weekend and she got excited when a lady walked in. She said “that's the poo picker” I asked what that meant! There is a lady who brings baggies with her for her morning walk. She picks up after the neighborhood dogs that are on their own, or with an owner that didn't pick up. The group calls her the POO PICKER! She seemed like a nice lady! My wife doesn't know her real name, she just saw photos in the group of this lady being the good neighbor who cleans up after dogs. She also knows the scoop on anyone who has stuff for sale. She predicted the neighbors getting divorced. She said she could tell there was trouble by the things they were selling in the group. Is this just a harmless hobby, or does this seem to be a bit over-the-top!? Has my wife crossed the line into being way too invested in other people's drama? She asked me to be a moderator too, I said no. I'm glad I've been able to avoid most of it so far. Any advice?!

SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
You wouldn’t think it would work, but researchers say thinking about death can actually help people live happier, healthier and more meaningful lives. Studies have found that reflecting on mortality can reduce anxiety, increase appreciation for positive moments, and encourage stronger relationships and community connections. Experts say many people fear suffering near the end of life more than death itself, and avoiding the topic can make those fears even worse. Accepting that life is temporary may motivate people to focus on what truly matters, care for themselves and make the most of their time. Psychologists also say discussing death openly with loved ones or support groups can help people feel more prepared — and less overwhelmed by it.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
It sounds like things are moving forward on a sequel to the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael”. Lionsgate Studios Motion Picture Chair Adam Fogelson said he’s “really excited about the progress we’re making” during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Thursday. He provided a bit of detail, saying: “The conversations that we’ve been having with all of the appropriate parties continue to go exceptionally well, and I would say that there is a ton of incredibly entertaining Michael Jackson (stories)” yet to be told.” Fogelson also pointed out that “many popular parts of his music catalog” were not “touched upon in the first film.” As for what events from Jackson’s life would be covered in a potential second film, Fogelson said the studio “can go forwards and backwards in telling this story.”
A familiar face from Sheldon Cooper’s mortal enemies list appears in a new teaser for the “Big Bang Theory” spin-off “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” – though whether he’s playing the same character remains TBD. Wil Wheaton, who played a heightened version of himself throughout 10 of BBT’s 12 seasons, resurfaces in an HBO Max clip for the upcoming offshoot. At the 0:30 mark, in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, he appears inside Stuart’s comic book store, seemingly firing an energy blast at ‘Stuart’, ‘Denise’, ‘Bert’, and ‘Kripke’. Robert Irwin, the 22-year-old conservationist won Season 34 of “Dancing With the Stars,” and his star wattage has only continued to rise. While mom Terri Irwin and big sis Bindi Irwin are thrilled for his success, they are reportedly worried that new Hollywood offers will pull him away from his role at the Australia Zoo. A source was quoted as saying: “Terri and Bindi…say Robert should chase his dreams…(but now) they’re upset and saying they’ll never be able to manage the zoo without him.” The source described it as a “losing battle” for them because “he will need to make the move to L.A. at some point soon.” ABC hired Robert to host “Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro”, which was filmed in Australia, and premieres July 13, but not every show is going to accommodate his schedule at the zoo.
Idris Elba claims he has never been in serious contention to play ‘James Bond’, despite years of speculation from the Hollywood rumor mill. When PEOPLE and asked Elba how he felt about his name being “thrown out” as a potential star of the upcoming 007 reboot, he responded: “My name’s not getting thrown out (there)…They’re going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can’t wait — it’s going to be amazing.” Elba’s name entered the mix long before Daniel Craig’s final bow as Bond, when Sony Pictures executive Amy Pascal revealed in a leaked 2014 email that she felt “Idris should be the next Bond.”

OF THE DAY
MYTHBUSTERS: SUNSCREEN EDITION…
These statements, contrary to what you have probably been told, are all myths. Each will be followed by the facts…
• Dark skin doesn’t need sunscreen/can’t get melanoma: Darker skin tones are less prone to skin cancer, but this can also mean the signs of trouble are ignored.
• A base tan protects you: A base tan is nature’s way of producing sun protection because you’ve been irradiated. But that doesn’t lessen your risk of skin cancer, and constant tanning ages your skin.
• You don’t need to use sunscreen inside: All contact with sunlight requires protection, even exposure through an office or car window — and walking from building to building.
• The number on sunscreen is proportionate to the number of minutes of sun protection: Nope. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to burn protected skin. SPF 15 allows 1/15 of harmful UVB rays to reach the skin. That means you’re protecting against 93% of UVB radiation. So, SPF 30 blocks 97% and SPF 50 prevents 98%.
• The SPF in makeup is enough: Maybe for a few minutes. But if you’re outside longer than 15 minutes, you need higher SPF and must reapply.
• One application of sunscreen in the morning is good for the whole day: Reapplying is just as important as the first coat. Sunscreen gets consumed when light hits it, which means you need more, regularly.
• You don’t need sunscreen during off-peak hours: The sun can cause damage no matter what time it is. If you’re outside for longer than 15 minutes, use protection. You can get burned at 8am, or after 4 pm.
• Sunscreen on your face, arms, back, and legs is enough: It’s a great start, but you should also apply it to the ears, nose, hands and the tops of your feet. And remember your scalp, especially if you have thinning or sparse hair.
• Melanoma is only caused by sun exposure: It can strike without sun exposure, which makes regular skin checks important. Sun exposure does make the risk higher.

WEIRD NEWS
A growing number of New Yorkers are stepping into the ring for ‘chess boxing’, a hybrid sport that combines speed chess with actual boxing rounds. Classes at Brooklyn’s iconic Gleason’s Gym attract everyone from architects and finance workers to martial artists, with competitors alternating between chess matches and sparring sessions. Victory can come by knockout, checkmate, or running out the chess clock. Organizers say most matches are still decided on the board, not in the ring. The unusual sport, which originated from a 1992 comic and later gained popularity in Europe, is said to be taking New York City by storm, despite concerns over the risks of head trauma and boxing injuries.

THE LIST
TV food show host Guy Fieri says the perfect burger is about more than just toppings: “It’s all about execution. The basics have to be covered.” Here are some key burger tips for barbecue season, from the Mayor of Flavortown:
☞ Season & smash: Use beef with 20% fat for better flavor and juiciness. Place the beef ball on the hottest griddle or cast-iron pan possible, and smash the down to about half an inch thick to create crispy edges and caramelization.
☞ Flip once they’re crispy: Let one side fully brown and crunch before turning it over.
☞ The cheese is key: Choose American cheese — it melts best for classic cheeseburgers.
☞ Steam the cheese: Cover the burger with a metal bowl or dome and squirt water underneath to melt the cheese without overcooking the meat.
☞ Toast a brioche bun: Use a buttered, toasted brioche bun for texture and flavor.
☞ Add “LTOP” toppings: Lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle are essential, but he says they should all be sliced extra thin for the best bite.
