A new MIT study found the unwritten rule of “returning the favor” may apply only between equals. Researchers found that in relationships between friends, peers, or coworkers, people generally expect generosity to be reciprocated. However, in unequal relationships – like the one between bosses and employees, mentors and mentees, or relatives of different generations – expectations are different. Instead of the recipient returning the favor, people expect the original giver to continue being generous, with less expectation placed on the other to reciprocate. The findings, based on experiments involving nearly 600 US adults, held true even when the “lower ranked” person in an unequal relationship gave first…such as an employee to a boss. Researchers say a single generous act can quickly establish a lasting pattern for how a relationship is expected to operate.

Matt Damon may be suiting up with a Linothorax for Christopher Nolan’s hotly anticipated “The Odyssey”, but that doesn’t mean his run as a CIA agent suffering from dissociative amnesia has necessarily come to a close. In a recent interview, Damon said he’s open to another entry in the Bourne film franchise – and he’s taking pitches for it. Quote: “We’re always looking to try to get another one of those because we loved it”. He also revealed: “There’s always some attempt going on to write, to come up with a new story. So if you have anything, let us know.” The Bourne films have collectively grossed more than $1.64 billion at the global box office.
As it turns out, Amanda Seyfried‘s viral cover of Joni Mitchell’s ‘California’ on “The Tonight Show” wasn’t pure coincidence — she was once attached to play the singer-songwriter in a biopic. In an interview with British GQ, Seyfried revealed that she learned to play Mitchell’s “Blue” album on dulcimer, piano and guitar during the COVID-19 pandemic, in preparation for a biopic. She also learned the Mitchell classics ‘Both Sides Now’ and ‘The Circle Game’, but the project didn’t end up working out. Still, Seyfried said she is proud of her musical accomplishment. Cameron Crowe is now directing a different Mitchell biopic.

A grandma talk to about anything – and she’d make you feel good? Need a little grandmotherly wisdom or a warm conversation? A unique project called Grandma Stand is bringing that experience to people of all ages. Founded in 2012 by New Yorker Mike Matthews, his idea was inspired by his own grandmother, whose kindness and advice always lifted people’s spirits. So, he set up a simple stand where anyone can stop by and chat with a volunteer grandmother – free of charge and with no agenda. What began in New York’s Central Park has grown to include about 20 volunteer grandmothers and has inspired similar stands in several other states. What the grandmas offer to visitors is simple: they listen closely, ask gentle questions, and remind people that things have a way of working out — and they seem to enjoy it as much as the visitors. The project’s popularity is now being highlighted in a new PBS documentary, shining a national spotlight on the power of connection, kindness, and grandma-style wisdom. Even the Pope isn’t immune to customer service headaches. Pope Leo XIV, who lives modestly and receives only a small stipend as leader of the Catholic Church, recently received an unexpected windfall: a forgotten PayPal balance worth $8.65. An Illinois rep traveled to Vatican City to personally deliver the check, which dated back to before Leo’s election as pope. Leo said that he had tried resolving the issue by phone — but was disconnected by customer service.
