SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Having friends with more money may affect your happiness more than you think. A new study found that people who feel financially behind their peers often report lower levels of well-being, even when their own income is similar to others around them. McGill University researchers analyzed data from more than 200,000 people across 22 countries and found that comparing your lifestyle to wealthier friends, coworkers, or social circles can influence feelings of happiness, purpose, and connection. The effect was especially noticeable among younger people. Researchers say the findings highlight how financial comparisons – not just actual income – can shape how people view their lives and success.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
‘Freddy Krueger’ is ready for another close-up. Paramount has closed a deal for rights to adapt the original screenplay for “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” under its new genre label Paramount Primal. Domestic rights are being licensed from the Wes Craven estate. The as-yet untitled film is currently in development. Plot details haven’t been revealed, but it’ll be set in the world of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and based on the original 1984 film. That means more of Freddie, the iconic child killer with the burned face and metal claws.
Randy Quaid, known for his roles in hit comedies like “Christmas Vacation” and “Kingpin”, will make a rare public appearance as a parade grand marshal in Ocean City, New Jersey’s “Night in Venice” event on July 25. Quaid, who has had multiple run-ins with the law, and claimed to be chased by Hollywood’s so-called “Star Whackers,” will be participating in a Christmas-themed celebration that combines patriotism and holiday spirit. Fans will have the opportunity to purchase VIP meet-and-greet packages and attend a live Q&A session with Quaid.
Jennifer Lopez is still searching for a new lover…of the mansion she’s been trying to unload for years, after a buyer she had on the line fell through. The potential buyer walked away after dropping a “substantial” deposit on the $50 million Beverly Hills palace that J Lo originally purchased with Ben Affleck. TMZ says the almost-buyer backed out on Tuesday for an undisclosed reason, so, it’s back to square one for Lopez and her real estate agents. J Lo and Ben bought the home together in May 2023, dropping almost $61 million for the 12-bedroom, 24-bathroom abode.
DID YA KNOW!?
The Earth gains about 40,000 tons of dust from space every year. Most of it burns up in the atmosphere. Tiny particles still reach the surface.

OF THE DAY
In spite of what you may have been taught in school, it turns out Earth will NOT eventually be swallowed by the Sun when it expands into a red giant about 5 billion years from now. A new study has determined that as the Sun ages, it will lose mass, weakening its gravity and allowing Earth’s orbit to drift farther away – probably far enough to avoid being engulfed. The catch? Earth will still become far too hot to support life – billions of years before any of this happens.
E.T.’s favorite candy, Reese’s Pieces is getting its first new US flavor in a decade. Today, Hershey will officially introduce “Reese’s Pieces with Chocolate Cookie”, which features the brand’s signature peanut butter candy wrapped around a crispy chocolate cookie center. The new treat taps into the growing popularity of multi-textural candies that can provide an unexpected tasting experience. Hershey says the addition creates a fresh snacking experience while keeping the classic Reese’s peanut butter taste fans love. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/5d74efpj

A team of engineering students from Italy’s University of Pisa built the world’s largest paper airplane – and it actually flew. Nicknamed Project Icarus, the plane was made entirely from paper and glue, stretched an incredible 66 feet (20m) across, and measured 23 feet (7m). It soared 193.5 feet (60m) at an event in Bologna, Italy, earning a Guinness World Record and breaking a mark that had been held by a German university since 2013. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3ftpc256

Grilling may be a summer tradition, but plenty of us say we’re nervous around the barbecue. A survey of 5,000 people (in the US) found nearly half (49%) say grilling is intimidating, especially when it comes to cooking chicken. The biggest grilling nightmare? A whole chicken, which was ranked both the riskiest and most difficult food to grill. Other difficult-to-BBQ foods include mac & cheese, watermelon, and pizza. Many people said they have suffered classic barbecue disasters, including dropping meat through the grates (41%), running out of propane (25%), or burning the outside while leaving the inside raw (25%). Despite the fears, 47% say food simply tastes better off the grill – and 84% would barbecue more often if they had the chance. Here, according to the survey, are the top “Unspoken Grill Rules”…
✓ You never touch another person’s grill without permission
✓ Always let the meat rest before serving
✓ Don’t open the lid unnecessarily
✓ No “backseat grilling”
✓ Never press down on a burger with a spatula
