As rising prices continue to squeeze household budgets, a growing global movement is encouraging people to repair broken items instead of replacing them. Repair Cafes are free community events where skilled volunteers help neighbors fix everything from lamps and appliances to clothing and electronics. What began in the Netherlands in 2009 has expanded to more than 4,000 Repair Cafes worldwide, with nearly 850,000 items repaired each year. Supporters say the movement reduces waste, saves money, and challenges today’s throwaway culture. Related efforts, including the Buy Nothing Project, tool libraries, and “right to repair” laws, are also gaining traction. For many volunteers, it’s a rewarding way to share skills and help others.

George Clooney will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 83rd Venice film festival, which runs Sept. 2-12. In a statement, Clooney said: “This festival is without question my favorite and to be given the Golden Lion is a tremendous honor. It also probably means I’m old, but I’ll take it.” Since breaking out as ‘Dr. Doug Ross’ on NBC’s “ER” in the 1990s, Clooney has won 2 Oscars, 4 Golden Globes, 4 Actor Awards, one BAFTA, 2 Critics’ Choice Awards, an Emmy and an American Film Institute Life Achievement Award. The actor, who has a home in Italy, has taken several films to the Venice film festival over the years, most recently last year’s “Jay Kelly.”
Two of the most decorated actors in Hollywood, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale, are set to join forces in “Heat 2,” which is scheduled to begin shooting in November. It’s a sequel to the 1995 film “Heat,” which starred 2 other legends, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. DiCaprio is expected to play ‘Chris Shiherlis’, the role portrayed by Val Kilmer in the original, while Bale is set to take on Pacino’s character, ‘Vincent Hanna’, a LAPD robbery homicide detective.
Prime Video has set Wednesday, November 4 for the premiere of its Muhammad Ali limited series “The Greatest”. The date and first look teaser were revealed Saturday during a presentation at Essence Festival of Culture. The Greatest, starring Jaalen Best as Ali, is billed as “an intimate exploration of the incomparable life of the boxing champion, humanitarian and global icon.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/32dx49xw

A couple’s argument over text now has an official name: “fexting.” While many assume texting only makes disagreements worse, new research suggests that’s not always the case. After reviewing 15 studies, researchers found digital arguments can be just as effective as face-to-face ones, and sometimes even better. Texting gives people time to think before responding, helping them avoid saying something they’ll regret. Experts say fexting works best for minor disagreements, but when emotions run high or the issue is serious, it’s still better to put the phones away and talk in person.
Ideas about cleanliness often form long before the evidence does, and facial hair is a good example. Beards have long been linked by some with dirtiness, or germiness (if that’s a word…), especially in food service and healthcare, even though research doesn’t support that assumption. A study in Service Business found that people tend to judge workers with beards more harshly on cleanliness and food safety, even before any actual testing is considered. Bacteria research from 1967 also complicated things: unwashed clean-shaven faces carried the most bacteria, while washed clean-shaven faces had the least. That suggested hygiene depends more on washing habits than facial hair itself. In medical settings, studies show masks matter far more than shaving. Overall, scientists say the evidence points to a simple conclusion: beards aren’t inherently unhygienic, but cleanliness still depends on how well you wash.

LEGO has set a new speed record with a life-size version of its Technic Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear supercar. Built from nearly 328,000 LEGO Technic pieces, the full-scale vehicle reached 111 km/h (69 mph) at the Goodwood hillclimb circuit, more than doubling the previous record for a LEGO car. The project took a team of builders about 9,400 hours to complete over almost 8 months. While its body is made largely of LEGO elements, the car has a custom metal chassis, roll cage, carbon wheels, and working suspension. Powered by a small electric motor, the 1,800kg vehicle was realistic enough to resemble a genuine Koenigsegg while in motion. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3m6xvtp7
