Forget the fountain of youth – your family tree might hold the secret to a longer life. A new study of more than 4,000 people found that adult children of centenarians (people who lived to 100 or older) had lower rates of death, heart disease and high blood pressure than people whose parents had shorter lifespans. The pattern appeared across 3 long-term studies in the U.S. and U.K., with heart-related problems and death occurring years later on average. Interestingly, lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet and exercise barely changed the results, suggesting genes or other family factors may play a role. Cancer, however, was the exception, with no significant difference in risk. The researchers caution that this information doesn’t hand anyone a free pass to skip the gym or ignore their blood pressure. And those without centenarian parents aren’t necessarily locked into shorter, sicker lives.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
"Barbie” producer and Mattel Studios boss Robbie Brenner talked about a follow-up to the hit live-action movie in a session at the Toronto Film Festival. Brenner told the TIFF crowd: “We all want to see the Barbie sequel. I want to see it too. I’m sure at some point, one day, there will be one.” Timing, however, remains a question, with other Barbie projects also in the works. She pointed out: “Right now, we’re…making, an animated Barbie movie with Chris Meledandri.” She called that project “super exciting”, and assured the crowd: “We will continue to do other Barbie things as well.”
Whoopi Goldberg is ready to get back in the habit again, and she’s tired of waiting. The EGOT winner has spent years trying to get “Sister Act 3” off the ground. And as the project remains in production limbo, Goldberg admits she’s not very “Joyful, Joyful” about the long road the return has taken. Whoopi said she doesn’t think studio heads “really understand the relationship people have to Sister Act because everybody grew up with it”, but she does think they will let the project go ahead. She added: “I just hope it’s sooner rather than later because I’m getting old!” The original “Sister Act” hit theaters in 1992

Have you ever had a problem with a store or other business, but gave up on filing a complaint after too many minutes spent on hold? Irked customers might soon be able to make their dissatisfaction known by simply talking into their phone. A startup called Voicebox lets shoppers scan a QR code or tap an NFC chip in a store, then simply record a quick voice note on their phone about their experience. The message is automatically transcribed and sent to the company, along with an analysis of the speaker’s sentiment. Voicebox is already being used in places like airports, where travelers can comment on things such as messy bathrooms or confusing gate directions. The company is also building a public directory where people can leave voice reviews of businesses — meaning your next restaurant review might be more “voice memo” than Yelp. Girl Scout cookie season is about to get a little more pawsome. For the 2027 season, Girl Scouts of the USA is introducing “Patch Pals”, its first-ever dog treat, a soft-baked, blueberry-muffin-flavored snack made with pet company BARK. The canine cookies feature 4 different patch designs inspired by Girl Scout experiences: friendship, community, exploration, and play. There are also “Sparkables”, the organization’s first allergy-friendly cookie, an oatmeal chocolate-chip treat made without the 9 major food allergens. But there’s a catch: both new products will be sold online only, from January through April.
