Dear John,
Our daughter is dating a guy. He's very nice, but I'm concerned that he's going to be a negative influence on our daughter's credit. Let me explain. Our daughter has been super responsible all her life. She got a job very young and saved money to buy a car, then traded that up for a better car. She's saved and worked hard to put herself into a great place financially. She skipped college to go right to work at a job she loves. That's where she met this guy. He really is a great guy, but his past is completely different. He grew up with a single mother. She struggled to get him things he needed, but he studied and made it into college with a small scholarship. He graduated with some school debt, but the bad thing is he got a pile of credit cards and racked up a bunch of other debt and now he has a horrible credit score. I only know this because they've been talking about getting married and buying a house. He said he's no where close to that being a reality. My daughter could qualify for a mortgage on her own right now, but if they get married and he's in the picture, she will not qualify. I know she loves him and I think he's great, but I'm concerned that he might put a financial strain on my daughter. She's worked hard to be in the position she's in, that really concerns me as a mother. I know she's worried too, we've had that conversation. She wants my advice and I'm not sure what to say! Any ideas? How do you balance love and finances? Do you keep dating until he fixes his situation? That could take a decade at this rate. Then they would be in their late 30s and may be too late to start a family. I'd love your advice on this. I'm not a wealthy person so I can't bail them out if they get in a pickle!

Doesn’t it drive you nuts when the person you’re with always wants to forego the elevator and “take the stairs”? Well, it turns out, they’re probably onto something. Taking the stairs more often could help you live longer, according to a new scientific review. Researchers analyzed data from more than 480,000 people aged 35-84 across 9 studies, with participants followed for about 14 years. Those who regularly climbed stairs had a 39% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular causes and a 24% lower risk of death from any cause, compared those who climb stairs less often. Experts say stair climbing provides both aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercise, while being easy to fit into daily routines. The research found an association rather than proving stairs directly extend lifespan. Still, taking the stairs appears to be a pretty healthy step.

Once upon a time in Hollywood…the sequel finally got a name. Just 3 months before its release, Netflix has unveiled the title of David Fincher’s follow up to Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. A brief new teaser reveals that Brad Pitt will return to his role in… “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.” Tarantino is back as screenwriter, having initially written the film with the plan to direct. Even after he decided against it, Pitt was still keen on reprising his stuntman character, leading him to bringing in Fincher, who directed Pitt in “Seven” and “Fight Club”. Netflix has unveiled the official trailer of a bizarre reality competition show based on “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”. It shows contestants happily enduring all sorts of mayhem, while being guided by the voice of the late Gene Wilder, who famously played ‘Willy Wonka’ in the 1971 movie. Netflix got permission from Wilder’s estate and worked with AI company ElevenLabs to re-create the late actor’s voice. “The Golden Ticket” series premieres Sept. 23. Leah Remini is going from “King of Queens” wife to Beverly Hills housewife. She confirmed reports that she’s joining the upcoming 16th season of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”, captioning an Instagram photo from an earlier appearance on “Watch What Happens Live” with the words: “It’s True”. No word yet on whether Remini will be a full-time cast member or a “friend of,” although she doesn’t seem to be connected to anyone on the cast, which includes Kyle Richards, Sutton Stracke, Dorit Kemsley, and Rachel Zoe. Cereal companies are bringing back something many parents remember from their childhood: actual toys inside the box. With breakfast cereal sales down more than 13% in the last 5 years, major brands are turning to nostalgia to lure shoppers back. Kellogg’s recently revived the cereal-box prize after more than a decade, offering collectible “Toy Story 5” spoon figurines. And General Mills is giving away themed toys featuring characters like the Honey Nut Cheerios bee and Trix Rabbit, with puppet versions of its Monster Cereal mascots (Count Chocula, Franken Berry, and Boo Berry) coming in October. Cereal box toys disappeared years ago amid safety concerns and criticism of marketing sugary cereals to kids, but companies now hope a little old-school fun can make cereal exciting again.
The Canadian city of Ottawa is testing special permeable pavement that could help prevent flooding by letting rainwater soak directly into the ground, instead of rushing toward storm drains. Made by PurePave Technologies, the pavement can absorb an impressive 18 litres of water in just 32 seconds through less than one square foot. A city pilot project will install sections along 2 streets this fall. The technology is designed specifically to withstand colder climates.
