A new study suggests that when a major artist drops a huge album…it can lead to an unexpected danger: more traffic fatalities. Researchers found a 15% increase in fatal crashes on days when highly anticipated albums were released. The study examined top-streamed albums from 2017-22, including releases by Taylor Swift, Drake and Bad Bunny. Researchers suspect drivers may be distracted while using their phones to stream new music or fiddle with playlists. Sadly, on average, 139 people died in crashes in the US on album-release days, compared with 121 on other days. The study doesn’t prove phones caused the crashes, but researchers say the takeaway is simple: queue up your music before you start driving.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Simon Cowell is going to be missing from "America's Got Talent" for the next couple of weeks while he undergoes a routine procedure related to his back. TMZ says this is a routine procedure and there is no indication of a new major health crisis. Cowell has a history of back issues following a serious electric-bike accident in 2020 that required surgery. It's unclear who will fill in for Cowell during his absence or exactly when he'll return to the judges' table.
Andrew Garfield has a secret Instagram account. He said to Variety: “I’m as addicted as anybody. My screen time notifications are horrific to me. It’s like, I’ve given all of those hours to nothing.” Garfield revealed he is particularly drawn to “weird ceramics” and “lots of Japanese kind of craftspeople” on the platform. In spite of the enjoyment he gets from it, he said: “It’s genuinely enraging because we don’t have as much control over these impulses as we should, and it’s been by design. It’s pretty dark when you look at it.”
Meghan Markle's reported return to acting continues to generate speculation, with conflicting accounts as to whether the Duchess of Sussex is being lined up to star in Guy Ritchie's Netflix crime drama “The Gentlemen”, following her UK move. Deadline first reported on the rumors that Markle could join the show's cast last week, but cautioned that talks were hypothetical. On Saturday, Tina Brown, the former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, reported that the offer had been withdrawn, citing a backlash in the UK. On Monday, while releasing the trailer for the show's second season, Netflix confirmed that Season 3 is coming, but no mention of Markle was made. Season 2 premieres Sept. 3.

A jersey worn by Michael Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals could become the most expensive basketball jersey ever sold at auction. Jordan wore the iconic #23 white jersey during Game 3 against the Utah Jazz, part of his legendary “Last Dance” season with the Chicago Bulls. He went on to lead the Bulls to their 6th championship in 8 seasons. The jersey is the only publicly known white game-winning jersey from the 1998 Finals available for sale, and is expected to go for $10-15 million.
A Dutch TV host has set a Guinness World Record by driving a giant motorized clog at 70mph (113km/h). Klaas van Kruistum and his TV crew teamed up with British engineer Kevin Nicks, who previously built a record-setting motorized garden shed. Using an electric go-kart frame, they created a wooden-clog-inspired vehicle with a polyester and fiberglass shell. Maybe restaurants are experiencing “tipping fatigue” too. Some U.S. restaurants are getting rid of tipping entirely, and simply building higher wages into their menu prices. At San Francisco’s La Cigale, for example, servers earn about $40 an hour, while customers pay a set $140 per person with no tip expected. Supporters say the model creates fairer, more predictable pay, particularly for kitchen staff who traditionally earn less than tipped servers. But it can be a tough sell: one Massachusetts restaurant raised prices 23% to eliminate tipping, then eventually brought gratuities back. Despite growing tipping fatigue, experts say tipping is unlikely to disappear anytime soon because customers often balk at higher menu prices.

An Edmonton couple who lost their British Columbia home in a fast-moving wildfire faced another unwelcome surprise: a $660 fee to cancel their Rogers internet and cable service. Greg Brown and his wife escaped the Aug. 1 Bradley Creek wildfire with their vehicles and a few belongings, but their home was destroyed. When his wife called to cancel their service, she was initially told they could either pay the $660 cancellation fee or keep the account active for $10 a month. After media contacted Rogers, the company apologized and waived both the cancellation and equipment fees.

A new survey (in the US) found that “cheers” is the British expression people most enjoy hearing, followed by “brilliant” and “cheeky.” About one-third of respondents said they find “Britishisms” amusing or charming, while only 6% find them annoying. TV and movies are the biggest source, followed by YouTube and TikTok. Interestingly, adults ages 35-44 are most likely to hear or use British words.
