SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

If you need to chill out, grab a book. A new editorial from researchers at the University of Cambridge suggests reading for pleasure may do more than provide an escape. It could benefit your mental and brain health. One survey found that just 6 minutes of reading was associated with a 68% drop in stress levels. Regular readers also report more empathy and less loneliness, while older adults who read regularly have a lower risk of cognitive decline. Kids who develop reading habits early also show better attention and fewer mental health problems later on. In a survey, reading ranked as the most popular way people relax, with 38% picking books as their go-to method. That beats enjoying a glass of wine (31%) or a hot bath (10%).

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

“The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event” stars Barry Keoghan, Joseph Quinn and Harris Dickinson were spotted filming the iconic opening of the “A Hard Day’s Night” movie for the forthcoming film. Directed by Richard Lester, the 1964 film followed the crew over 2 days as the band struggled to keep themselves and Paul McCartney’s mischievous grandfather in check while preparing for a live TV performance. One of the most notable moments — and the scene apparently being filmed, was a sequence of shots showing 3 bandmembers (Starr, Harrison, and Lennon) running from swarms of adoring fans. All 4 films will be released theatrically in April 2028.

Samuel L. Jackson and his wife LaTanya Richardson Jackson will receive the Clarence & Jacqueline Avant Humanitarian Award at the HollyRod Foundation‘s annual gala. The foundation is dedicated to raising awareness and providing resources to families that have a loved one who has received an autism or Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis. This year’s HollyRod gala, the nonprofit’s signature fundraising event, will take place Nov. 7 in Los Angeles.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Dating apps may be getting a little less digital. Newer apps are encouraging singles to meet through shared interests and real-world activities, rather than that old routine of endless swiping and chatting. Surf, for example, lets users filter matches by fitness habits, and has organized workout-based blind dates. Dutch app Breeze skips messaging altogether, instead arranging a time and place for matches to meet. Even established apps are moving offline, with Bumble and Tinder adding features focused on in-person events. The shift comes as dating-app burnout grows, with 78% of users saying they’re tired of the swipe-and-chat thing. Meanwhile, paid users have declined at both Tinder’s parent company and Bumble.

FUN FACT FOR YOU:
Share this with your friends... they'll think you're really smart!

✓ All wrestlers must have a handkerchief handy. (This applies to ‘competitive’ rather than ‘spectacle’ wrestling…)

✓ Golfers must sign their scorecards, or they are disqualified.

✓ If you remove your shirt during a footrace, you’re disqualified.

✓ In baseball, if a player attempts to catch a ball with their hat, the batter is awarded third base. This is sometimes called a “ground rule triple”.

✓ If you remove your shoe and kick the ball in soccer, it is considered a handball.

WEIRD NEWS

In 2012, engineers at Georgia Tech used high-speed cameras to film wet dogs shaking themselves dry. They found that a dog can get rid of about 70% of the water on its fur in just 4 seconds, shaking roughly 4 times a second. The secret is loose skin, which whips back and forth with much larger motion than the body underneath it, helping fling more water away. The researchers even built a robotic “wet-dog shake” simulator. They say the findings could eventually help inspire better drying technology, including self-drying cameras and robots.

THE LIST

7 HABITS OF HIGHLY LIKEABLE PEOPLE:

1. Don’t Judge: Likeable people try not to make snap judgments about others. They accept that people have different personalities, opinions and ways of doing things, and they don’t feel the need to change them.

2. Get Personal: They’re willing to share a little about themselves, including their struggles and successes, without oversharing or bragging. Being genuine and showing some vulnerability helps people feel more comfortable around them.

3. Ask About Other People: Likeable people don’t make every conversation about themselves. They ask questions, show genuine interest and give others plenty of opportunities to talk about their lives.

4. Listen: Asking questions only works if you actually listen to the answers. Likeable people put down their phones, pay attention, and respond to what the other person is saying.

5. Remember: They remember the little things people tell them – like a birthday, vacation, or important event. That shows you actually care about the person and value your conversations with them.

6. Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously: Likeable people know when to laugh, joke around and have some fun. They don’t think every conversation or situation has to be serious, and their lighthearted attitude makes them enjoyable to be around.

7. Be Hospitable: They make people feel welcome, whether it’s inviting someone into their office, offering coffee, or having them over for a meal. A little hospitality can go a long way toward making people feel valued.
