SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Your morning coffee might be doing you some good, but all those fancy add-ins could be working against you. A Tufts University study of more than 46,000 adults found that drinking 1 to 2 cups of black or lightly sweetened coffee was linked to a 14% lower risk of death. Coffee loaded with sugar and saturated fat, however, showed no such benefit. Another study found a little sugar was okay. Researchers stress these studies show a connection, not proof that coffee helps you live longer.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Jon Stewart will remain as one of the hosts of “The Daily Show” for another 2 years. Stewart has struck a new deal to remain as a host and co-executive producer of the Comedy Central show through to the end of 2028. The move means he’ll be in the position for another US general election. It is also a statement from Skydance that should quiet critics concerned that David Ellison and company might look to cancel the political comedy show, much like CBS canceled “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” before Skydance took control of Paramount last year.he performance of Chmerkovskiy’s wife, DWTS dance pro Jenna Johnson.
Especially in the 2 years since “Saturday Night Live” celebrated its legacy with a 50-year anniversary special, one big question has loomed over the iconic sketch comedy series: Who will replace creator and producer Lorne Michaels for the next 50? Jason Sudeikis, who was a cast member from 2005-2013, spoke on a recent podcast, and opened up about who he thinks should carry Michaels’ baton. A tear came to his eye when asked point blank if he thinks the job is Tina Fey’s for the taking. He answered: “It is, man…I mean, I’d be dying. I mean, who would be mad about that?” Sudeikis added that he hopes Fey would accept the job, and that the thought genuinely makes him feel good.

OF THE DAY
Eating an apple straight off the tree while apple picking isn’t considered a great idea — unless you wash it first. Experts say apples can pick up bacteria from animals, soil, water, and possibly pesticide residue. Even organic apples aren’t exempt from contamination. The good news? You don’t need special produce wash or soap. A good rinse under plain running water and a rub can remove much of the dirt and bacteria on the surface. So go ahead and enjoy that freshly picked apple…just give it a quick wash first. And yes, the same rules apply to apples from the grocery store.
Adding a little heat to your meal could help you eat less — without feeling like you’re dieting. A Penn State study found people ate 11-18% less food when meals contained hot paprika instead of sweet paprika. Researchers say the spiciness naturally slowed eating, with smaller and less frequent bites giving the brain more time to register fullness. And participants enjoyed the spicy meals just as much. So, a little cayenne or hot paprika might help with portion control – no willpower required.

WEIRD NEWS
Hershey has added a new disclaimer to its Reese’s Halloween pumpkins, clarifying that the jack-o’-lantern face shown on the packaging isn’t actually carved into the chocolate. The change follows a class action lawsuit from customers who claimed they expected decorative faces and paid extra for the novelty. A Florida judge dismissed the case, ruling the customers demonstrated disappointment rather than actual harm. The packaging still has an image of the treat with a jack-o-lantern-esque face carved into it and now says: “Carving not on actual product.”

A major new study in The Lancet has identified humanity’s biggest health threats this century, and 2, they say, have the potential to cause human extinction. What are they? Well, if you’ve been paying attention to the headlines recently, you know that malicious artificial intelligence, including AI-created biological weapons, is one. The other thing that could wipe out humanity is a nuclear war that triggers widespread famine. Researchers stress that both are considered low-probability risks, but their consequences could be catastrophic. The study identified 15 other major threats, including obesity, climate change and pandemics. Experts say governments can reduce the dangers by strengthening health systems, investing in new technologies, and monitoring emerging risks.
Here are the rest of the top human health threats, in alphabetical order…
– Air pollution
– Antimicrobial resistance
– Childhood malnutrition
– Climate change
– Collapse of international health aid
– Conventional armed conflict
– High alcohol consumption
– High blood pressure
– Income inequality
