SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

The common blackbird has been crowned the most melodious bird in a new study. Researchers in Germany had 84 people listen to recordings of 123 bird species and rate how pleasant they sounded. The blackbird’s voice scored an impressive 4.52 out of 5, while the barn owl came dead last with 1.32, thanks to its creepy screech. Scientists found people generally preferred softer, more complex birdsongs. They say our attraction to birdsong may be partly evolutionary — and listening to it could help us relax and feel more connected to nature.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Sabrina Carpenter has joined Tom Holland and Margaret Qualley in the cast of the upcoming biopic documenting Fred Astaire’s storied career. Holland stars as Astaire, returning to his dance roots after his breakout role in “Billy Elliot” on London’s West End. The ‘Espresso’ singer will play Ginger Rogers, Astaire’s onscreen dance partner with whom he made 9 films. Qualley will play Adele Astaire, Fred’s sister and his first major dance partner. The Astaire film, which is still untitled, will be directed by Paul King. It is expected to be released late next year or in early 2028.

“Family Guy” is expecting a treat for Halloween: Kieran Culkin will voice none other than the Devil himself in Hulu’s October 5 special “Family Guy: Happy Hell-o-ween”. The synopsis: “Brian and Stewie find themselves in Hell paying for 24 seasons’ worth of bad behavior. When they manage to annoy even the Devil himself, they end up in charge.”

Despite his recent health woes that have led to multiple hospitalizations, Lionel Richie is set to return to "American Idol". Richie, who was recently treated for atrial fibrillation, will be returning for Season 25. Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan will also be returning as judges for the upcoming season. Richie has been a judge on American Idol since its revival in 2018. He appeared in a video while Underwood and Bryan were onstage in Nashville to announce the big news. Richie is still recovering following his treatments but has plans to return to the stage in Las Vegas on October 14. He was hospitalized 3 times over the past few months.

JOKE OF THE DAY

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Brushing your teeth right after a meal could actually be doing more harm than good. Eating makes your mouth temporarily more acidic and softens your tooth enamel, so brushing immediately afterward can wear that enamel down. Over time, that can lead to thinner enamel, tooth sensitivity and cavities. Prosthodontist Dr. Jie Sun recommends brushing before you eat or waiting at least 30 minutes afterward. That gives your saliva time to neutralize the acids, restore your mouth’s natural pH, and let the enamel harden again. So after dinner, don’t rush to the bathroom with your toothbrush. Give your teeth a little time to recover.

If doomscrolling leaves you stressed and miserable, there’s a more uplifting way to use your phone: bloomscrolling. Therapist Niloufar Nekou describes it as deliberately seeking out uplifting, beautiful or inspiring content to protect your peace and boost your mood. That could mean heartwarming stories, adorable animal videos, peaceful nature scenes or creative DIY projects. And there’s a bonus: The more positive content you watch, the more your social-media algorithm learns to serve you similar stuff. So instead of spending an hour watching terrible news, try filling your feed with things that make you smile. Your brain – and your algorithm – will thank you.

THE LIST

INVESTMENT FADS OF THE PAST:

New stats show that one in 5 Americans view wagering on sports as an investment tool, and for Gen Z, it’s 2 in 5. Here’s the problem: Although the survey found Gen Z is the most successful sports betting generation by recovering 80 cents for every dollar wagered, that still means chances are, if you’re betting on sports, you’re going to lose money in the long run. Here are some other investing fads that didn’t pay off…and one that did…

✗ Tulips: In 17th-century Holland, rare tulip bulbs became so valuable that some sold for the price of houses. The bubble eventually burst, leaving plenty of investors holding very expensive flowers.

✗ Railway Shares: During Britain’s 1840s railway boom, investors, including Charles Darwin, poured money into railway stocks. The speculation helped fuel one of the era’s biggest financial crashes.

✗ Baseball Cards: Vintage cards featuring legendary players can still sell for millions. But the massive overproduction of cards during the late-1980s and ’90s “Junk Wax” era caused many values to collapse.

✗ Beanie Babies: In the late ’90s, collectors treated these little stuffed animals like tiny furry gold bars. The craze fizzled, and most Beanie Babies are now worth far less than their peak prices.

✗ NFTs: NFTs exploded from $82 million in sales in 2020 to $17.6 billion in 2021, as people paid huge sums for digital collectibles. The market subsequently crashed, with sales falling to about $5.63 billion.

✓ Bitcoin: Bitcoin has experienced enormous ups and downs, but its long-term rise has been dramatic – from around $600 a decade ago to about $80,000 now. It remains highly volatile and speculative.
