SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Your dog may be getting the blame for your sleepless nights, when you’re actually the one doing the tossing and turning! A University of Toronto study tracked 25 owners and 38 dogs using motion sensors for about 4 weeks. In 22 human-dog pairs, movements were linked, but owners moved first more often than their dogs. Surprisingly, sharing a bed with a dog didn’t significantly affect how long or how well people slept. Owners with multiple dogs rated their sleep worse, although their sensors showed no difference. Researchers caution that the study was small, so Fido isn’t completely off the hook.

There’s no question “You Can See Everything” is generating a lot of buzz. But will it translate into Oscars buzz? The film distributor, A24, certainly hopes so – and it has launched an awards campaign that’s turning a lot of industry heads. It’s no surprise that A24 is campaigning for it to be nominated for best documentary. What is surprising is A24 also wants the film to be considered for best picture. In the Academy Awards’ 98-year history, no feature documentary has ever been nominated for best picture. Not only that, A24 is putting Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder forward to be considered in the best director category — again, something that no documentary has ever accomplished.

There is more “American Horror Story” in our future. A week ahead of the Season 13 finale, FX announced it has renewed Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk‘s anthology series for a 14th season. The renewal follows AHS: 13‘s biggest streaming premiere ever. The debut episode landed on Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 charts and was Murphy’s biggest launch ever on Hulu and Disney+. This is the first renewal for American Horror Story in almost 7 years. The anthology received a 3-season pickup in January 2020 for Seasons 11, 12 and 13, leading many to think that it would be fitting for the horror show to end its run with a 13th season.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did You Know... Flamingos aren't born pink. Their feathers start out grey or white and gradually turn pink because of natural pigments found in the algae and tiny crustaceans they eat.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Feeling stressed? Try the butterfly tap, a simple technique that may help you calm down. Cross your arms over your chest, placing each hand on the opposite shoulder, then slowly tap left and right 6 times. Take a slow breath and repeat. If hugging yourself in public feels awkward, tap your feet instead. The technique uses bilateral stimulation, a soothing technique that activates both sides of the body and is also used in trauma therapies like EMDR.

College students who ask AI chatbots about their health are more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression, according to a survey of nearly 100,000 students. About 52% of those using AI for health questions showed signs of anxiety, compared with 43% of non-users. Depression showed a similar gap. Researchers say it’s unclear whether chatbot answers increase worry, or anxious students are simply more likely to seek answers from AI. They recommend teaching students to question AI-generated health advice and seek professional help when needed.

WEIRD NEWS

A Pokémon champion is asking fellow gamers to clean up their act after one opponent’s body odor was so bad, he says he threw up. Donghun Youm, winner of the 2023 Pokémon Milwaukee Regional Championships, described the stinky situation following a tournament in Baltimore. He said the smell was so bad that he and several other competitors struggled to concentrate, eventually bringing the problem to a tournament judge. Youm didn’t name the player, but his complaint has reignited a long-running issue in competitive gaming. Some players are now calling for official rules allowing judges to penalize competitors for extreme hygiene problems – and potentially even forfeiting matches.

THE LIST

GEN Z’S “NOT NICE” DATING TRENDS:

Gen Z has a whole new vocabulary for dating, but relationship psychologist Dr. Orion Taraban says a lot of these supposedly modern trends are just old romantic mistakes with fancy new names. Here are some of them…

➠ Shrekking: Dating someone you consider less attractive in hopes they’ll appreciate you more. The catch? They might still dump you for someone they find more attractive.

➠ Frankensteining: Trying to reshape a partner’s appearance or personality into your ideal mate. Taraban says it rarely works.

➠ Clear Coding: Arriving at a first date with a checklist of qualities you want in a partner. It’s also called “dating with intention,” although treating a date like a job interview may not help you get “hired”.

➠ Friendfluence: Bringing friends along to help evaluate a potential romantic partner. In other words, a double date with a panel of judges.

➠ Benching: Keeping someone on the romantic sidelines as a backup option while you explore other possibilities. Think of it as dating’s version of having a spare tire.

➠ Wanderlove: Falling for someone while traveling or on vacation. The idea is that people may relax and act more naturally when they assume they’ll never see each other again.

➠ Wildflowering: Ditching the rigid dating checklist and letting romance unfold naturally. This is considered one of the healthier approaches to finding love.

➠ Body Count: Asking someone how many sexual partners they’ve had. Taraban calls the question ridiculous and suggests people may not answer honestly anyway.

➠ Situationship: A romantic relationship that never quite becomes official. Despite the lack of a clear label, Taraban says Gen Z tends to prefer more structure in relationships.

➠ Dating Out of Your League: Taraban says many women on dating apps pursue a small percentage of older, wealthier and more successful men. This can leave people competing for partners who may not be realistic matches.

➠ The $225 Date: The average date now costs a whopping $225. Taraban argues that expensive outings and high expectations can make it harder for people to get together in the first place.

➠ The Romance Recession: This refers to reports that younger adults are having less sex, with one-third of men and one-sixth of women under 30 reporting no sex in a given year. Between dating costs, endless choices and complicated expectations, finding a partner may be harder than ever.
