SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

One simple word makes children 30% more likely to cooperate – and it works on adults, too. Wharton marketing professor Jonah Berger says people like to act in ways that match how they see themselves. In a study, 5-year-olds were asked to clean up a messy classroom. Kids asked, “Can you help clean?” were less enthusiastic than those who were asked: “Can you be a helper and clean up?” Berger says “We all want to see ourselves as smart and competent and intelligent in a variety of different things”, and calling someone a helper allows them to claim a desired identity, making them more likely to help.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

“True Detective” co-stars and Hollywood friends, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson found out a decade or so ago that they might be half-brothers. In 2023, they revealed it to the public, and now, they’ve turned that crazy family secret/scandal into a TV show about … themselves. Apple TV’s “Brothers” is about 2 old friends who find out they might be half brothers, named ‘Matthew McConaughey’ and ‘Woody Harrelson’. They play somewhat heightened versions of themselves going through the existential crisis of learning their family may not be what it seems. Apple TV’s “Brothers” streams on Wednesdays.

Jon Watts has been tapped to direct the first film in a new “Star Wars” trilogy. Best known as being the director behind the first 3 Tom Holland “Spider-Man” movies, the filmmaker will direct from a script written by Simon Kinberg. An early report indicated that the trilogy will actually be chapters 10 through 12 of the Skywalker Saga, continuing the path that most recently concluded with “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019. But other reports say this is a standalone series. Lucasfilm declined to comment.

Former “Dateline” correspondent Chris Hansen watched the new film “Primetime”, and called it “over the top” and said Robert Pattinson’s version of himself is “so detached, so unhinged, so dark, so unlikable.” TMZ says Hansen, whose “To Catch a Predator” turned sting operations into appointment television, told one of his fellow audience members: “98% of that movie that I just saw was pure fiction.” He also complained: “They make (star Robert Pattinson) look like a character in a horror film. There’s all kinds of green hue on his face.” Ultimately, Hanson praised Pattinson’s performance, but gave the movie a D.

Loud-car drivers may soon have more than annoyed neighbors to worry about. Several US cities are pairing license-plate readers with noise detectors to identify vehicles with excessively loud exhausts or stereos. New York City’s 12 noise cameras recorded nearly 16,000 noise events and issued 1,691 summonses in 2025. Now, West Haven, Connecticut, plans to connect four 4 detectors to existing plate readers, with first-offense fines potentially reaching $100. The systems aren’t completely automatic: police will review detected violations before taking action. Officials say the goal is to address complaints about noisy vehicles. But critics continue to raise privacy and surveillance concerns.

WEIRD NEWS

A 9-year-old Minecraft and Roblox fan allegedly racked up $118,000 in YouTube advertising charges using his father’s company credit card. The boy, known as Mighty Mike, reportedly learned how to create a $20 ad campaign after becoming frustrated with low views. His father says the youngster then kept creating campaigns for 3 weeks, apparently believing more money meant more views. His spending was discovered when company officials questioned the father about the charges. The dad acknowledged leaving the card details accessible without parental controls. The boy’s response? “I’m definitely cooked.” The family says they’re adding guardrails.
