SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
More Americans are giving themselves a career Plan B – just in case. A new survey of 2,000 office workers found nearly half are “career cushioning,” meaning they’re exploring backup career options in case their current job stops “working” for them. And 77% have already started preparing for that possibility. The biggest reasons? They’d like work they actually enjoy, less stress, or simply a safety net if they lose their job. Interestingly, 91% have stayed in their current job for at least 2 years. But nearly half say their responsibilities have changed significantly — with new technology and AI playing a big role. So, apparently, the new career strategy is: keep your job… but have a backup plan. Some numbers from the survey:
Why Workers Would Pursue A Backup Career:
29% — To do something they actually enjoy
29% — For a better lifestyle or less stress, even at the same pay
29% — If they lost their current job
Why Some Haven’t Considered One:
27% — Don’t have the time
26% — Worried they’re too old to start over
20% — Don’t want to start again at entry level
52% — Haven’t even considered a backup career
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Not even a Tom Cruise-filled, all-stops-pulled press tour including a GQ cover, a “New Heights” podcast appearance and a “Risky Business”-inspired jaunt down the “Jennifer Hudson Show” spirit tunnel could keep “Digger” from flatlining at the box office. Following a slew of negative reviews and divided word of mouth, the film is shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest flops, with estimates of just $7.5 million domestically in its opening weekend. The top movie was the new Colleen Hoover adaptation “Verity”, starring Anne Hathaway, which pulled in a projected $35 million plus.
Kathleen Turner is well aware that she and Michael Douglas had a fatal attraction. After Douglas revealed in his upcoming memoir “One Helluva Ride” that he and Turner had an affair while filming 1984’s “Romancing the Stone”, Turner spoke out. In a statement she said: “Good heavens what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael and I look forward to enjoying the book.” In the memoir, Douglas, who was separated but still married to Diandra Luker at the time, revealed the affair, though they denied romance rumors for years.

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR LIFE RUN SMOOTHLY:
❑ Create “Dirty Zones” To Contain Clutter: Keep clutter from taking over your home by designating spots where everyday mess can land before spreading everywhere else. That could mean a cabinet for coffee supplies, a bench by the door for shoes, or a basket for backpacks and pet toys. Architect Albert Betesh calls them the “first line of defense” against household chaos. The idea is to give your stuff a temporary landing spot, then tackle the mess one manageable pile at a time.
❑ Draw For 10 Minutes: Feeling stressed? Grab a pen and doodle for 10 minutes. Drawing can help pull your attention away from anxious or stressful thoughts, while encouraging your body’s “rest and digest” response, says neurologist Soma Sengupta of Tufts Medical Center. As your nervous system settles, your heart rate may slow, muscle tension can ease and your body can shift into a calmer state. And the best part? You don’t need artistic talent - stick figures totally count.
❑ Boost Your Mood by Brightening Someone Else’s Day: Want a quick mood boost? Do something nice for someone else. Help a neighbor, buy a stranger a coffee, volunteer or simply give someone a genuine compliment. Yale psychology professor and happiness expert Laurie Santos says happier people tend to be more “other-oriented” rather than focused solely on themselves. Research suggests that acts of generosity - from donating money to giving your time - can make us feel better, too. Apparently, kindness really can be contagious.
❑ Want to see how well you’re aging? Try the dual-walking test: walk at your normal pace while doing a mental task, like counting backward, naming an animal or musical artist for every letter of the alphabet, or simply chatting with someone. Longevity expert Bill Hanks says the ability to keep your walking pace while thinking is an important sign of healthy aging. If your gait slows significantly during the mental task, he says, it could indicate early cognitive or motor decline.
❑ It turns out, your brain likes surprises almost as much as you might prefer to stick to your routine. Try breaking out of the “same old, same old” by trying a new restaurant, taking a different route to work, or exploring somewhere you’ve never been. Novel experiences force you to pay attention instead of running on autopilot. They can also trigger dopamine, which boosts your mood and may support learning and memory. Psychologist Karyn Hall says doing something new can make the experience more memorable because dopamine helps “lock” it into your mind.

WEIRD NEWS
Kraft Dinner has officially gone off the rails — and this time, you can drink it. Kraft Heinz has teamed up with Toronto soda company Solly’s Craft Soda to create a limited-edition mac n’ cheese-flavored cream soda. The sweet-and-savoury drink is being billed as a “conversation-starting soda,” and judging by social media, it certainly is. Some people called the combination “diabolical,” while others were immediately intrigued. One wrote: “Y’all are sick! (Save me one)”. The drink, with a taste inspired by KD’s signature cheesy flavor, is available online for $2.95 a can, with 8- and 24-packs also available. It’s expected to hit retailers, including Walmart, in October. Because apparently, drinking your KD is the next logical step after eating it. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2s43ddbk

LIFE CHEAT CODES:
A Reddit user recently asked people to share “cheat codes” that completely changed their lives. Here are some of the best…I hope…
⇒ “I was told the most important things to buy are the things you walk and rest on. Don’t go cheap on beds or footwear. Your back and knees will thank you later.”
⇒ “Save money. One of the best pieces of advice my dad ever gave me was, ‘Your plans and goals throughout life are going to change, but money gives you options.'”
⇒ “Be really nice to customer service reps. Sounds basic, but it’s wild how often you get upgraded, refunded, or helped way faster just by being cool to the person who deals with everyone’s anger all day.”
⇒ “Every episode that ends with a cliffhanger makes you start the next episode to see what happens. If you stop mid-episode, it’s a lot easier to break from the bingeing.”
⇒ “Learn to ask for help. Normally, we want to handle every situation, issue, task, and job ourselves, but that is not always possible…Analyze the situation, and if you think it may be beyond you, ask for help.”
⇒ “If it takes less than 5 minutes to do a task, just do it now.”
⇒ “Going to the gym. It fixes a lot of those aches and pains that previously never seemed to go away.”
⇒ “Crumple your raffle tickets and slightly uncrumple them before dropping them in. I win a lot of raffles.”
⇒ “Learn to say no without explaining your reason for saying no.”
⇒ “Put your feet physically on the ground to turn off your alarm. It takes away a lot of the excuses and temptation to hit snooze.”
⇒ “Don’t listen to criticism from someone you would not ask for advice.”
