SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Traditionally, smoke exposure from wildfires spells disaster for vineyards. But in the aftermath of this year’s California fires, a new study has found that some wine drinkers are not only OK with the characteristics that smoke impacts upon wine, some actively enjoy it — especially when they know what they’re drinking. When smoke from wildfires drifts through vineyards, grapevines absorb compounds that can create a smoky taste in the resulting wine, ranging from subtle to intense, and sometimes with an ashy aftertaste. The research, conducted in New Zealand, found there is “more forgiveness” for the so-called smoky wines than winemakers would expect, which is good news for an industry facing increasing wildfire threats. The team suggests the winemakers be completely transparent about smoke impact, and consider thoughtful labeling and marketing, and blending smoke-impacted wines with non-impacted wines, to cater to different consumer preferences.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

A trailer for “Leaving Neverland 2” has dropped, promising to pick up the pieces of the bombshell 2019 documentary in which Michael Jackson faced pedophilia allegations. UK broadcaster Channel 4 posted a 40-second teaser for the film, which follows Wade Robson and James Safechuck’s fight for justice after accusing the King of Pop of sexual assault. Robson is seen saying: “I want my day in court,” to which Safechuck adds in a separate interview: “People must have known.” The hour-long film details the personal toll of going public with their accusations, and the backlash from Jackson’s army of fans. “Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson” premieres March 18. It’ll be available in North America on YouTube. LINK: https://youtu.be/9MB47h9IQOg

DID YA KNOW!?

According to a study, humans have 27 distinct emotional states. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley had 853 men and women watch short video clips meant to evoke a range of reactions, hoping to measure the true spectrum of human emotions. Nearly all participants reacted in a similar manner to any given video. And the researchers were able to use this data to determine that humans have 27 distinct categories of emotion. Previous research had only identified 6 significant emotional states.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

About 150 people showed up in rural Pennsylvania last weekend for the Taste of the Wild Outdoors dinner in Pine Grove. The buffet-style meal, held at the local fire hall, included all kinds of fare that you might not find anywhere else – except in the wild. That included: stingray casserole, bear stew, raccoon andouille and rabbit kielbasa. There was also roasted grey squirrel, bobcat lo mein, wild boar ham and coyote teriyaki on a stick. And the mystery meat this year — was alligator. For the less adventurous, there was also venison and salmon. Organizer Larry Primeau, who headed up a crew of local sportsmen to pull off the event, said his goals are to encourage anglers, hunters and trappers to consider new species as food, make full use of the animals they kill, and raise money for youth outdoor activities.

Foodies in China have been flocking to a funeral home. Why? Because a delicious noodle dish served at its canteen went viral on social media. The dish is found at the Erlong Funeral Home in the province of Guizhou. The canteen caters to the funeral home’s customers, but as word began to spread about its noodles, hungry diners – some posing as mourners – began showing up to try it. The funeral home offers noodle dishes during breakfast and supper hours, and a worker said that sometimes, lineups are so long that diners have to wait a few hours to get their food. The funeral home has since announced it will allow some members of the public to eat at its premises, as long as they don’t disturb actual mourners.

WEIRD NEWS

A robber is in custody after essentially turning himself in to police. Bullhead City, Arizona police posted surveillance photos on social media from 2 recent bank robberies, asking for help identifying the suspect. Soon after, detectives received a tip from someone who identified him as 37-year-old John Steiner. They were working on obtaining a search warrant for the suspect’s truck when he showed up at the police station. Why? He wanted to report that someone pointed a gun at him and accused him of being the bank robber posted on social media. Steiner was then taken into custody for robbery, his truck was searched, and clothing was found inside that matched what was worn during the robberies. Also still inside the truck: The notes he allegedly used to demand money from the bank tellers.
