THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!
Dear John,
My 20-year-old daughter wants to live with us until she finishes college. She says she is saving for a new house when she leaves school and promises to pay her bills, but is trying to avoid paying rent. My husband thinks this is great. He says it’s brilliant and is excited to have his little girl home again. I say she is a grown adult, and adults leave the nest to figure things out independently. How should I tell her – and him – how I feel without making it seem insensitive?
Signed,
Momma Knows Best

You know how when you were a kid, your parents always asked you how you could possibly have room for dessert, after eating so much dinner? And you always responded by saying that you saved a tiny corner of your stomach for cake, or whatever sweet treat it was awaited you? Well, it turns out, you were absolutely correct…kinda. Scientists have discovered that the same brain cells that tell us we’re full are also responsible for making us crave sugary treats. That means we’re genetically wired to reach for those cookies, cake, or caramel apple pie loaded up with whip cream – even when our appetite has been satisfied. The German researchers say a previously unknown neural circuit is responsible. So, if you find yourself polishing off a half-tub of cookie-dough ice cream after dinner, you can blame that.

Tyra Banks has addressed the backlash she’s received about things she said and did on her former reality TV show, “America’s Next Top Model.” During her speech at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards, Banks said: “You guys have no idea how hard we fought to bring the diversity to that television show at a time when it didn’t exist.” She went on to ask: “Did we get it right? No. I said some dumb (stuff). But I refuse to have my legacy be about some stuff linked together on the internet when there were 24 cycles of changing the world.” Banks, who was receiving the Luminary Spotlight award, concluded by saying she is “so excited that I, and so many of us, have opened that door for others to follow.”
A new companion has entered the TARDIS. In the first trailer for Season 2 of the latest reboot of “Doctor Who”, Ncuti Gatwa‘s ‘The Doctor’ is joined by ‘Belinda Chandra’ (Varada Sethu), who notes that she’ll go by ‘The Nurse’. The Doctor tells her: “There is something already connecting us”, as we get a glimpse of Belinda in another time and place, where she’s an intergalactic soldier. This season follows the pair on an epic quest to get Belinda back to Earth. But as The Doctor teases: “There are forces beyond this universe. We think we are so clever, but we are like children.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/5h5fcc6d
DID YA KNOW!?
You’re more likely to splurge on unnecessary items when shopping on a touchscreen — as opposed to using a desktop computer. A 2022 University of British Columbia study had 300 students take part in 3 different experiments that examined their online purchasing habits. It was discovered that desktop users were more likely to use rational thinking when it came to spending money online, while touchscreen products resulted in participants opening their wallets more for products that weren’t quite so rational. The study’s author said: “My advice for consumers who want to save a bit of money is to put away the smartphone when you have an urge to spend on a guilty pleasure.”

SCOOP OF THE DAY
A
huge network of underground spy tunnels dating back to World War II
could become London’s next big tourist attraction. The series of
secret, subterranean passages, which provided inspiration for the
‘James Bond’ novels, cover an area of about 86,000 square feet
(8,000m2), is set to be open to the public in 2028. It’ll be part
museum, part memorial, and part art gallery and cultural hub – as
well as a nightlife hotspot with what’s being called the world’s
deepest bar. Up to 3 million visitors per year are expected to the
underground attraction. Construction will start in late 2026, at a
cost of about $149 million. Originally built between 1940-42 as an
air raid shelter, to provide protection from Nazi bombings, the
tunnels were never needed as intended, but were later repurposed as
headquarters for a division of MI6, the British intelligence agency.
It was while serving this function that they provided inspiration for
James Bond author Ian Fleming, who worked there in 1944.
A
budget-friendly drinks giant known for its bubble tea offerings has
overtaken McDonald’s and Starbucks as the world’s largest food
and beverage chain, by number of stores. China-based Mixue Bingcheng,
which means “honey snow ice city”, now has over 45,000 outlets
worldwide. With its signature drinks priced between the equivalent of
US 30 cents to $1.20, and a snowman mascot, Mixue’s founder said
his strategy is simple: “Let people around the world eat well and
drink well for just 2 American dollars.”

WEIRD NEWS
Of course, a typical week for an NFL player may involve hours in the gym, intensive sessions going over game video to perfect plays, and practice pretty much every day. But increasingly, pro footballers are working another activity into their regimen that you’d probably never expect: Chess. Yes, you heard that right. Chess. Proponents say the game, which like football, requires total mental “buy-in”, sharpens players’ acuity and split-second decision making — skills that come in handy on the field, too, of course. Players also say that chess helps keep them on their toes (mentally), often forcing them to shift their strategy suddenly. The game has become so popular among NFLers that each year, former and current players face off in a chess tournament called BlitzChamps, where the winner picks a favorite charity to receive the $30,000 in prize money. Last year’s victor was Kansas City Chief Justin Reid.
