Show Notes for Friday, March 21, 2025

Today we chat with the amazing actress Lauren Buglioli. Lauren stars as “Vanessa McBride" in CBS’s new daytime drama series “Beyond the Gates” on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+. "Beyond the Gates" is set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington D.C., and in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States. At the center of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those that live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where the characters live, love, work and play. Those who have "made it" and those who haven't are all trying to navigate life -- and some with more grace than others.

SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

If it sometimes feels like your kids are driving you crazy, take heart. It turns out it could quite literally be the opposite. According to a new study, dealing with all those sleepless nights and stressful situations that come with parenthood might actually be helping keep your brain young and sharp. UK researchers analyzed the brain scans of almost 40,000 adults, and found that people who had children showed slower cognitive decline as they aged, compared to those with fewer or no kids. The lead study author, from the Rutgers Center for Advanced Human Brain Imaging Research, said that the brains of those with children showed “increased functional connectivity” as they age – and those with no kids showed the opposite. And the results also showed that the more children you have, the better the effects. The researchers believe that the expanded friends network and frequent family visits that come with parenting help create social bonds that benefit cognitive function. Also, it’s likely that having kids makes people more physically active and likely to create healthier habits, which also help the brain.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Emmy winner Eric Stonestreet of “Modern Family” fame is the latest big name added to the cast of Showtime’s new drama “Dexter: Resurrection”, which chronicles a new chapter for Michael C. Hall’s serial killer ‘Dexter Morgan’. In a guest-arc, he will play ‘Al’, a Midwesterner who is believed to be a serial killer. Stonestreet joins other big names tapped for guest starring stints as rumored serial killers, including Krysten Ritter and Neil Patrick Harris.

Good news and bad news for fans of “The Neighborhood.” After weeks of silence, the CBS comedy has been renewed for another season, but that will be the series’ last. Season 8 will broadcast during the 2025-26 television season on CBS, and will also be on Paramount+. The network said that the “show’s loyal fans deserve a proper farewell season full of the trademark humor and heartfelt moments that are synonymous with the series.” The Neighborhood stars Cedric the Entertainer as ‘Calvin Butler’, and he also serves as an executive producer.

“Leaving Neverland” director Dan Reed is planning on making a third installment to document the forthcoming trial of Michael Jackson accusers Wade Robson and James Safechuck against the late pop star’s companies. Reed is already following up his bombshell 2019 docuseries — in which Robson and Safechuck alleged that Jackson sexually abused them as children — with the sequel “Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson,” which premieres March 18. It primarily focuses on Robson and Safechuck’s fight to have their day in court after suing Jackson’s companies, for neglecting to protect them from the alleged abuse. Reed said he he’ll be in the courtroom with his camera and a crew” if the case does go to court.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did you know it's illegal to own just one guinea pig in Switzerland? Guinea pigs are highly social critters that prefer the company of other guinea pigs. That is why it’s illegal to own just one of these adorable pets in Switzerland. Also, if one of your guinea pigs passes away and you're not ready to commit to another, the Swiss government will also allow you to rent a guinea pig as a companion to your remaining pet.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Blue Origin owner Jeff Bezos plans to launch an all-female crew into space this spring that includes Katy Perry, journalist Gayle King and his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez.

A company has announced it has a working prototype of a solar-powered, wireless charging case that will fit on any phone. Infinix debuted it at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. In a demonstration, a representative pointed a source of light to the phone’s rear surface, and the device started charging. Of course, for the charging case to work, your smartphone needs to have wireless charging. The case, while not all that attractive, is simple, fairly thin, and easily put on and removed from your device. The bad news? It would take a couple days to fully charge a typical phone. The good news? Simply placing your phone (in the case) out on a sunny day should get you some power.

WEIRD NEWS

A court in India has ruled in favor of a moviegoer who sued a theater, saying it played too many ads before the film, which delayed the movie start time — and messed up his whole day. The theater was ordered to pay the plaintiff $320 in damages. In 2023, Abhishekh M.R. paid US $10 for 3 tickets to see a war drama at a PVR movie theater. The movie, which was scheduled to begin at 4:05pm, was delayed for nearly half an hour because the theater played “trailers, advertisements and other fillers.” That caused him to miss “other arrangements and appointments”, resulting in losses “which cannot be calculated in terms of money as a compensation,” the moviegoer claimed. His demands included $60 for “mental agony”.
