SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Have you ever had a dog that is ALWAYS hungry? Well, according to UK researchers, those pets, who tend to become overweight over time, have something in common with obesity-prone people. They found a genetic reason for many labradors’ – and some people’s – tendency to overeat. Changes in a particular gene interfere with a brain-signalling pathway that tells dogs – and people — when they’ve had enough to eat. In other words, the University of Cambridge team says, if you have a high genetic risk of obesity, you’re prone to gaining weight, unless you put tremendous effort into not doing so. And those with low genetic risk, “don’t have to work so hard.” Head of the study, Dr. Eleanor Raffan, said from that info, we can make this conclusion: “Owners of slim dogs are not morally superior – and the same is true of slim people”.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

ABC is sticking with a winning combination for the 2026 Academy Awards. Conan O’Brien is returning as host. Also coming back for next year’s ceremony are producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan and producers Jeff Ross and Mike Sweeney. O’Brien said Monday: “The only reason I’m hosting The Oscars next year is that I want to hear Adrien Brody finish his speech.” The 2025 Oscars was a ratings win with 19.69 million viewers across ABC and Hulu, the largest audience since 2020. The 98th Oscars ceremony will air on ABC Sunday, March 15, 2026.

Lucy Hale is best known as the leader in “Pretty Little Liars”, but in an alternate reality she could have been ‘Hannah Montana’. In a recent installment of BuzzFeed’s “The Puppy Interview”, Hale revealed a series of roles she auditioned for but didn’t get, including “Pitch Perfect”, “Hairspray”, “50 Shades of Grey”, “The Substance”, and, yes, for the lead role in “Hannah Montana”, which eventually went to Miley Cyrus. Hale said she tried out for the part “a couple years before they…cast Miley in it,” and said: “It was the audition that made me want to be an actress.”

DID YA KNOW!?

Did you know the original Back to the Future time machine was a fridge? The DeLorean was not always the way Marty McFly was supposed to travel to the past in the Back to the Future movie franchise. In fact, in early drafts of the script, the time machine was attached to a refrigerator and driven to the Nevada desert into a testing site for the atomic bomb, where it was strapped into the back of a truck and driven into the atomic explosion in order to harness its true power.

JOKE OF THE DAY

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study says that giving your child too much praise can harm them later, making them become more narcissistic.

It’s important for those who spend hour after hour each day in front of screens to go “touch grass,” an internet slang term that means participating in activities in the real world, as opposed to online. And now, there’s an app that will quite literally make you touch grass before you can scroll again. “Touch Grass” asks you to select 2 apps that you find to be the most distracting or time-consuming – and then it blocks them. The only way to unlock your apps is to take a picture of yourself outside — literally touching grass, and upload it to Touch Grass. Then, you can choose how much time you have on each app until you must go outside and ‘touch grass’ again.

A UK woman who recently celebrated her 106th birthday says the secret of her long life is…chocolate. Edith Hill only moved to a care home 6 years ago after turning 100, and she said her daily dose of chocolate keeps her feeling young and healthy. Her favourite chocolate bar is Cadbury Dairy Milk, but she’s good with giving any sweet treat a try. The retired secretary was born March 3, 1919, and she has survived 2 world wars – and has seen 5 monarchs and 23 prime ministers in her lifetime.
