SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

According to a new study, male fruit flies that drink alcohol become more attractive to females. Researchers at the Department of Evolutionary Neuroethology at the Max Planck Institute found that adding alcohol to males’ food increases their release of chemicals that attract females – and that leads to higher mating success. As you may know, fruit flies, or Drosophila melanogaster, are often found around food waste bins, as they feed on rotting fruit, which gradually produces alcohol. The scientists had been studying why they are attracted to alcohol and how it affects them when they made the discovery that alcohol, and particularly methanol, increased the males’ production and release of chemical sex signals, called pheromones, which made them more attractive to females. No word on if the findings have any connection to human behavior.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Is Tom Cruise ready to say goodbye to the “Mission: Impossible” franchise? That’s certainly the tone one gets from the latest trailer for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which sees him dangling from an airplane and coming under fire for his past actions, as footage from previous “Mission” movies plays like a memorial tribute to ‘Ethan Hunt’. The 8th film in the franchise was initially titled “Dead Reckoning Part Two”, but after the box office underperformance of ‘Part One’, Paramount retitled this film ‘The Final Reckoning’. Full story details are under wraps but it seems as though it is clearly being positioned as a “farewell” for the franchise. “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” opens in theaters on May 23. Tom Cruise‘s “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” is officially headed to Cannes Film Festival. The highly anticipated 8th film in the spy franchise will premiere out of competition on May 14, with Cruise and director-writer Christopher McQuarrie in attendance. It marks Cruise’s third time at Cannes. The first was for Ron Howard’s “Far and Away” in 1992, and the second for “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022. During his last Cannes appearance, Cruise also received an honorary Palme d’Or and gave a masterclass to attendees. The Final Reckoning is set for theatrical release on May 23.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did you know a single watermelon once sold for $6,125? A man in Japan in 2008 bought a nearly black Densuke watermelon for ¥650,000 or $6,125. This special kind of watermelon is only grown on the island of Hokkaido and has a different kind of sweetness than the watermelon we’re used to eating!

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study shows that people who live alone are more likely to feel depressed.

A dedicated gamer broke a Guinness World Record by beating the classic Super Mario Bros. video game with a time of 4 minutes and 54.565 seconds. Niftski, an American gamer with multiple speedrunning records to his name, said achieving the record-breaking time was the result of years of playing the Nintendo Entertainment System game — and hours of refining his technique to include every possible trick to shave off costly milliseconds.

WEIRD NEWS

A German company says it wants to change the surface on which basketball games are played – to glass. ASB Glassfloor, which makes, well, exactly that — floors made of layers of safety glass – says the visual benefits of sports played on this type of surface are worth it alone. The floors can be stationed on top of LED panels, creating what they call a “dynamic visual feast” featuring customized playing lines, logos, colors, animated graphics and, of course, ads, ads, ads. The floor’s markings can be changed digitally for use in other sports. The company says the glass surface has give and flexibility exceeding that of a traditional hardwood floor, and there is a ceramic coating which creates grip. Glass basketball floors also do not have “dead spots” or other quirks that can occur with wood courts. Glass LED courts are already in use at a few pro courts in Germany and Greece.
