SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

No, it’s not just you — people really are dumber than they used to be. According to a Financial Times report, assessments show that people across age groups are having trouble concentrating and losing reasoning, problem-solving, and information-processing skills — all facets of the difficult-to-pin-down metric that “intelligence” is supposed to measure. Experts say there’s no single answer as to why people seem to be struggling with cognitive skills, but one factor is the sharp decline in reading, and the world’s changing relationship to the way we consume information and media.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Nearly 4 years after Alec Baldwin mistakenly fired a loaded gun on the set of “Rust”, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza, the first trailer for the movie has been shared. The film, which stars Baldwin, plus Patrick Scott McDermott, Josh Hopkins and Travis Fimmel, follows Harland Rust (Baldwin) in 1880s Kansas as he breaks his grandson out of jail. Rust and his grandson — who was set to be hanged after mistakenly killing a rancher — become fugitives in Mexico, as they attempt to outrun a U.S. Marshal and a bounty hunter. Baldwin appears with a full beard and puts on a Western accent, telling McDermott in one scene: “Some things in life you can’t get back, I reckon.” Rust will hit theaters May 2 and will be available for VOD the same day. Kim Kardashian will testify against the Parisian underground gang accused of coordinating her infamous 2016 robbery, TMZ says. The SKIMS co-founder is set to travel to France in May to take the stand, nearly 10 years after being bound and robbed at gunpoint in her Paris hotel room. The thieves stole $10 million worth of jewelry, including the $4 million upgraded wedding ring Kardashian got from then-husband Kanye West. After a lengthy investigation, French officials ordered 12 suspects to trial in 2021, and in May, the jury trial will finally begin.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did you know there's a Guinness World Record for the stretchiest skin? Hailing from the United Kingdom, Garry Turner holds the Guinness World Record for the stretchiest skin due to the fact that he can pull the skin on his stomach 15.8 centimeters. He is able to achieve this almost impossible feat thanks to a collagen-defective condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Children who eat fish regularly are friendlier. A study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that, perhaps thanks to increased intake of omega 3s fatty acids, which have been shown to help brain development, kids who eat seafood regularly show better prosocial behavior—meaning they’re more likely to help others, share things, and show consideration. The researchers say this gives parents a food recommendation that could help their children develop socially.

Chewing on wood, of all things, may help improve your memory. Researchers from several South Korean universities found that test participants who chewed on wooden sticks showed increases in glutathione (GSH) levels in their brain. This this increase was associated with improved memory function, suggesting that something as simple as vigorous chewing could have meaningful benefits for brain health. And it’s possible that it doesn’t have to be wood. Chewing any hard material results in elevated “brain antioxidant levels such as GSH, potentially influencing cognitive function”, the researchers said.

WEIRD NEWS

Mount Everest expedition organizers will operate drones to airlift items up the mountain this climbing season. Why? To reduce the heavy loads carried by Sherpas, thereby lessening the risk of fatal accidents. The drones can carry up to 35 pounds (16kg) in high altitudes, and are able to make the treacherous trip from base camp to “Camp 1” (a 7-hour trek by foot) in just 15 minutes. In addition to transporting things like oxygen cylinders and hot meals, the drones can also be used to help keep the mountain clean. A trial run resulted in the removal of 1,300 pounds (590kg) of waste. The drones cost up to $70,000 each.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

THE LIST

SECRETS OF THE FRUGAL:

We’ve talked about this before, but you can never have too many ‘money-saving’ tips. Here are some of the best responses to a Reddit thread that asked: “What frugal/cheap thing will you do no matter your finances?”

► “I’ll always use the library to borrow audio/Kindle books, etc. Check to see if your local library participates in the Libby app. I easily read/listen to at least $4,000 worth of books a year.”

► “Only subscribe to one streaming service at a time; once I sign up, I immediately cancel and use it until the month is up. If there are still a few things I want to watch, I’ll go another month. If not, I move on to a new one!”

► “Save and reuse gift bags and tissue paper.”

►”I’ll never pay to withdraw my own money from a cash machine. It would have to be life or death before I paid even $1.”

► “I always make sure to meal prep. It’s such a small effort upfront but it saves me a lot of time and money throughout the week. Plus, it helps me avoid those tempting fast food runs.”

► “Eat leftovers and try my (darndest) not to throw food away.”

► “THRIIIIIFT! If I’ve got a butt-load of money, maybe I’d frequent the higher-end vintage stores, but I love thrifting!

► “Get water instead of soda when eating out. Both because it’s outrageous to pay $3-4 for a glass of soda, and to cut out extra calories…”

► “Add water to the end of the shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc., to get that one last wash.”

► “Squeeze every ounce of toothpaste out before replacing it.”
