SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

We automatically assume good people share our political views and bad people oppose them, according to new research. And that even happens with fictional characters like ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Thanos’. A study published in Political Science Research and Methods revealed what researchers call “motivated political projection.” This means we tend to think that people whom we like share our political views, while those we dislike must belong to the opposing political camp. Regardless of a character’s other traits (gender, age, background), participants consistently projected their own partisan identities onto the heroes — while assuming villains supported the opposing party. The researchers say this might help explain why political divisions feel so hard to bridge today.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

‘Jigsaw’ won’t be returning to theaters this year, after all. “Saw XI” has been axed from the release calendar. The 11th installment in the long-running slasher franchise was scheduled to open on Sept. 26, but Lionsgate studio will instead release another blood-soaked horror film, “The Strangers – Chapter 2,” on the newly freed-up date. Right now, it’s not clear if there are plans to unveil “Saw XI” at any point. Lionsgate greenlit the sequel in 2023, but the film’s screenwriters recently said “zero progress” has been made since they turned in a draft last spring.

YouTube hit a record 11.6% of all TV viewing in February, according to Nielson’s latest report. The top finish was only YouTube’s second, largely due to Nielsen methodology, which groups together all platforms of the Walt Disney Co. (including ESPN, ABC and streaming). In February, Disney fell to #2, while Fox Corp. rode a surge of viewership thanks to the Super Bowl to edge Netflix and end up third. YouTube has been on a long-term growth trajectory, and recently announced that living-room viewing had exceeded that on mobile devices and computers.

David Ayers’ blue-collar drama “A Working Man” has declared victory over “Snow White” with a projected domestic opening weekend haul of $15.6 million. Snow White is looking at $14-15 million in its second weekend, a steep decline of 65%, as the live-action update is dogged by poor word-of-mouth and controversial headlines over star Rachel Zegler. In third was “The Chosen: The Last Supper — Season 5, Part One” placing third, with a better-than-expected $12.8 million. The horror “The Woman in the Yard is looking at a 4th place finish with a projected $9 million.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did you know people in Medieval England had rap battles? Before rap battles, there was something in medieval times called “flyting.” This is when two opponents would trade insults at each other and it was widely popular in the 15th and 16th centuries.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A new article in Britain’s Daily Mail says that taking part in a new trend could end up being the thing that saves your marriage. And what would that be? It’s called a “bathroom divorce”. Similar in concept to the recently-coined term “sleep divorce”, where partners carry on with their coupledom, but sleep in different rooms, a bathroom divorce involves each partner having their own bathroom in the home, which they are able to use at their leisure, decorate and clean to their personal whims, and even (ahem!) spray air freshener to their heart’s content – or not at all. It seems that when a couple each has their own “personal sanctuary”, there are no arguments about “How much longer are you going to be in there?”, no lining up to use the shower, and perhaps most importantly, no fights about the…um… “condition” that the other person left the room in. Former US first-lady Michelle Obama went as far as to say that separate bathrooms were the key to a successful marriage. And Melania Trump, Joan Collins, and Sarah Michelle Gellar have all shared similar sentiments in regard to their own marriages and separate facilities.

WEIRD NEWS

There were exactly zero finishers in this year’s Barkley Marathons, an extremely perilous and peculiar race that consists of five 20+ mile loops in Frozen Head State Park TN. It is not uncommon for the ultra-ultramarathon to have no finishers, because it forces competitors to complete the off-track competition without the use of GPS. Runners must use a map and compass to navigate to locations on the route and collect pages from hidden books to prove they arrived there. The route and rendezvous locations vary from year to year, and race organizers are said to make the race more difficult to finish each year.

THE LIST

SECRETS OF THE FRUGAL:

We’ve talked about this before, but you can never have too many ‘money-saving’ tips. Here are some of the best responses to a Reddit thread that asked: “What frugal/cheap thing will you do no matter your finances?”

► “I’ll always use the library to borrow audio/Kindle books, etc. Check to see if your local library participates in the Libby app. I easily read/listen to at least $4,000 worth of books a year.”

► “Only subscribe to one streaming service at a time; once I sign up, I immediately cancel and use it until the month is up. If there are still a few things I want to watch, I’ll go another month. If not, I move on to a new one!”

► “Save and reuse gift bags and tissue paper.”

►”I’ll never pay to withdraw my own money from a cash machine. It would have to be life or death before I paid even $1.”

► “I always make sure to meal prep. It’s such a small effort upfront but it saves me a lot of time and money throughout the week. Plus, it helps me avoid those tempting fast food runs.”

► “Eat leftovers and try my (darndest) not to throw food away.”

► “THRIIIIIFT! If I’ve got a butt-load of money, maybe I’d frequent the higher-end vintage stores, but I love thrifting!

► “Get water instead of soda when eating out. Both because it’s outrageous to pay $3-4 for a glass of soda, and to cut out extra calories…”

► “Add water to the end of the shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc., to get that one last wash.”

► “Squeeze every ounce of toothpaste out before replacing it.”
