SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

The length of your daily walk may matter more for health than hitting a specific step count, according to new research. A large UK study of more than 33,000 mostly inactive adults found that those who walked in longer, uninterrupted stretches had a lower risk of premature death and cardiovascular disease than those who accumulated steps in short bursts. Participants averaged fewer than 8,000 steps a day and were followed for nearly a decade. Benefits increased as walks grew longer, regardless of total steps taken. The effect was strongest among very sedentary people, suggesting a continuous daily walk may be more valuable than chasing step goals.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

A year after stepping down from NBC’s “Today”, Hoda Kotb is launching a brand-new talk show. However, her new project won’t be airing on TV. Kotb will sit down with some famous faces to talk about their personal and professional highs and lows on the new show “Joy Rides”. Joy 101’s official Instagram page wrote alongside the show’s teaser: “Hop in, @hodakotb is going for a Joy Ride! Where to? Doesn’t matter. The best conversations happen when you’re on the move.” New episodes will drop each Wednesday for 6 weeks, beginning Jan. 21 on the Joy 101 YouTube channel. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/37spp7du

Although some “Heated Rivalry” fans are disappointed over the show’s ineligibility for US awards shows, one star doesn’t think the Canadian series could have been made in Hollywood. François Arnaud, who stars as gay hockey player ‘Scott Hunter’, explained how the show is “a huge lesson” for the industry after creator Jacob Tierney fought to adapt Rachel Reid‘s books in his vision. The plan was to make the show available through “a big streamer”, but they “had so many notes and so many thoughts” about changing the show, that Tierney “decided to leave them and get it made in Canada” for a “much smaller budget – but he was like, ‘I can do the show I want to make.’” Arnaud said that execs at the show’s former streaming home even suggested “No kissing until episode 5.”

DID YA KNOW!?

DID YOU KNOW… The inventor of the Pringles can is buried in one. Fred Baur, who helped design the iconic can, had his ashes placed inside a Pringles container after his death. It was a request he made years earlier.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

IF PEOPLE TALKED TO OTHER PROFESSIONALS THE WAY THEY TALK TO TEACHERS:

• “Ah, a zookeeper. So, you just babysit the animals all day?”

• “My colon never acts this way at home. Are you sure you’re reading the colonoscopy results correctly? Did you ever think that maybe you just don’t like my colon?”

• “I’d love to just play with actuary statistics all day. That would be so fun! I bet you don’t even feel like you’re at work!”

• “So you run a ski lodge? Do you just, like, chill during the summer? Must be nice.”

• “You’re a sanitation worker, huh? I hated all my garbage collectors when I was growing up.”

• “Do you even read your patients’ charts, or do you just assign them a random dosage based on how nice they’ve been to you?”

• “Oh, you’re a stand-up comedian, huh? So, you just stand up there and BS until your set is done?”

• “Before you give me a ticket, officer, I just wanted to mention: My taxes pay your salary.”

FUN FACT FOR YOU:
Share this with your friends... they'll think you're really smart!

The word “February” comes from a Latin word meaning “to cleanse”.

In ancient Greece, comets were called “hairy stars.”

Your eyes produce about a teaspoon of tears every hour.

In a feeding frenzy, sharks sometimes eat parts of their own body.

Shoes that were specific to left and right were not made until the US Civil War.

WEIRD NEWS

Some startup founders have decided to put their talents to work…by treating sleep like an Olympic sport – and making their bedrooms look like tech showrooms. Nicholas Flanders, co-founder of a Bay Area carbon company, has a “sleep stack” that would make any gadget lover drool: a $3,000 temperature-controlled mattress cover, an Oura Ring (sometimes swapped for Garmin) to track sleep stages, an eye mask collection, mouth tape to help with oxygen flow, and a red-light lamp to boost melatonin. The goal? Fewer groggy mornings…and less reliance on caffeine. These entrepreneurs see sleep not as downtime, but as performance optimization. Whether it’s cutting-edge gear or ritualized routines, the obsession sometimes teeters between genius biohacking and hilariously over-the-top bedtime cosplay.

QUESTION OF THE DAY
