THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!
Dear John,
I'm both nervous about Valentine's Day and excited for Valentine's Day. I've been dating my girlfriend for almost a year. I think she's expecting a proposal. Maybe I should be planning for that. I think she's great, but I want to be in a better place financially before we get married. I have a pile of school debt. I have a car payment that is almost finished, but the car is also pretty old. I have a great job, but my payments on everything in my life all add up. We have three couple friends that were engaged at Christmas time. All of them have been dating less time than we have. I'm head-over-heels for my girlfriend. I absolutely want to marry her and have a family with her. I'm just too logical to think this is a good time to do that. Do you have any advice? I have fun plans for Valentine's Day, but I feel like it might be even more clues to her that I'm proposing. I'm taking her to her favorite restaurant. It's where we went on our first date. I think I need to talk to her before then. Even if we have an amazing night, if she was expecting a proposal and I don't do that, it might ruin the night. But I'm also afraid that if we get engaged now, we might be stuck in debt together for a while. I'd love some advice on this. Do I tell her why I am not ready to get married? Do I just pull the trigger and get engaged with a giant anchor of debt pulling us down? Please Help!

SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Gen Z is leading a clear shift away from alcohol, according to a new survey, with 63% saying they’ve become less interested in drinking since first trying it – and many feeling that decline as early as age 23. A survey of 2,000 adults in the US found younger respondents are also the most likely to challenge old social norms and set new trends around how people socialize. Health and wellness motivations play a major role, with many citing a desire to feel better physically…and avoid hangovers. One in 5 Gen Z adults prefers non-alcoholic alternatives (including THC beverages), contributing to lower alcohol use overall. As attitudes change, drinking is increasingly seen as “out,” reflecting a broader cultural move toward more intentional, feel-good ways of unwinding.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are sticking up for the crew of their new movie. In a first-of-its-kind deal with Netflix, the actor-producers boosted pay for all crew members on “The Rip”, their action thriller recently premiered on Netflix. All 1,200 people involved in the production will get a one-time bonus if it performs well on the streaming platform, which typically pays cast and crew only an upfront fee. Matt quote: “Every single person who worked on it should benefit from it.”
Matthew McConaughey is trying something unusual in the fight against AI fakes: He’s trademarking himself. Over recent months, he’s secured 8 trademarks covering short video and audio clips of his face and voice, including a porch shot, a Christmas tree scene, and his famous “Alright, alright, alright” catchphrase. His lawyers say is to give him a federal tool to go after apps and users that clone his likeness or voice with AI without his sign-off. McConaughey said: “We want to create a clear perimeter around ownership”, and added that he wants consent and attribution to be standard in an AI-driven world.

OF THE DAY
It’s one of the latest TikTok health trends, and some medical pros approve of this one: Jumping 50 times right after getting out of bed. Why would you do that? The trend promises more energy, better mood, and reduced bloating. Now let’s see what science has to say about it: High-impact jumps can help strengthen bones over time, while the repeated effort can also build muscle and support overall physical function. Jumping also encourages lymphatic flow, which may help reduce fluid buildup, and boosts circulation. Just a brief burst of jumping can increase alertness, lift mood, and help reset your internal clock, making it easier to wake up feeling sharper. For a less-intense option, take short breaks, don’t jump as high, or do fewer than 50 jumps, which can still provide benefits. It should be noted that you shouldn’t start a jumping program if you have a weak pelvic floor (for obvious reasons…), or if you have knee, ankle or foot issues. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/ykuks69e

WEIRD NEWS
A Libyan phone dealer has finally received his shipment of mobile phones – that he ordered 16 years ago. The Tripoli-based vendor recently went viral after sharing a video of himself unpacking outdated Nokia handsets ordered in 2010, joking they looked more like museum pieces than products. The delivery was stalled after conflict erupted in 2011, paralyzing customs and logistics nationwide. The phones sat forgotten in a warehouse before being rediscovered, then finally delivered. Though both sender and recipient were in Tripoli, the shipment took 16 years to arrive. He opted NOT to pay for same-day shipping! LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4r9ea33c
