SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

For 25 years, Pew Research Center has tracked some of the biggest technological shifts in history. Today, most Americans subscribe to home broadband internet and own a smartphone. About four-in-ten describe their internet use as almost constant. But use of these technologies is not universal. For instance, Americans with the lowest household incomes are far less likely than their higher-income peers to subscribe to broadband internet at home. Here are the findings on technology use and digital divides from a 2025 survey: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2026/01/08/internet-use-smartphone-ownership-digital-divides-in-u-s/. Nine-in-ten U.S. adults use the internet daily, including 41% who say they’re online almost constantly. This is on par with what they found in 2023 and 2024 as well.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck recently appeared on “Joe Rogan” to promote their new Netflix film “The Rip,” and the long-time friends and collaborators shared their thoughts on how the streamer is changing the way movies are made. Damon pointed out that because viewers give a “very different level of attention” to a movie at home versus in a theater, Netflix wants to push the action toward the beginning of the film, rather than the third act. He also said there are behind-the-scenes discussions about reiterating “the plot 3 or 4 times in the dialogue” to account for people being on their phones.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

In the 2023 movie Plane starring Gerard Butler, a commercial aircraft is caught in a terrible storm. Dark purple thunderclouds suffocate the sky. The plane shakes and the lights go out. Turbulence throws an unbelted passenger across the cabin. Eventually a lightning strike cuts the plane’s power, forcing it to crash land in a warzone, where the movie’s story really begins. In reality, plane crashes in thunderstorms are extremely rare—largely because pilots seldom fly into thunderstorms in the first place. “You’re never going to intentionally fly into a thunderstorm, because thunderstorms contain the roughest air, as well as other hazards,” says Patrick Smith, an airline captain and writer of the Ask the Pilot blog. Avoiding thunderstorms, Smith explains, involves close collaboration between meteorologists, air traffic control, and the flight crew, both before and during the flight. Even though pilots avoid thunderstorms, sometimes they can’t, that is why most commercial planes get struck by lightning a couple times a year. https://www.popsci.com/science/how-pilots-avoid-storms/

WEIRD NEWS

A bizarre YouTube video, uploaded on January 5, consists of a blank screen with no audio or visuals. But that’s not the bizarre part. The information portion for the clip shows a duration of…140 years. The video’s description is equally puzzling, written in Arabic symbols that apparently translate to “Come, meet me in hell”. The good news? Once you click the play button, it drops to 12.5 hours. It was uploaded by the channel named @ShinyWR and has been viewed nearly 2 million times.
