SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

How much do we love our pups? Enough that we have basically no boundaries, according to a new survey. The poll, of 2,000 dog owners in the US, found 87% consider their dog their best friend, while 97% say their pup is a full-fledged family member. That devotion shows up in daily life: three-quarters talk to their dogs, with 62% using a “dog voice,” 47% said they share their bed nightly with their pupper, and 54% have eaten from the same plate. Many go further, throwing birthday parties (40%), creating social media accounts (45%), video-calling while away (60%), and 29% even said they center their entire lives around their dog. Want more stats? Fifty per cent of pet parents said they have dressed their dog in clothes (superhero costumes – 13%, bowtie collars – 16%, formal wear like tuxedos – 10%). 28 percent have cooked homemade meals for their pet, 21% have taken them for spa days, and 10 % have hosted dog photo shoots. And almost one in 10 revealed their dog appeared in their wedding or engagement photos. Here are some more of the unusual things owners said they have done with their doggo…

Let them sleep under the covers – 36%

Buy them birthday cakes or “pupcakes” – 30%

Create custom collars or accessories – 15%

Let them “help” with chores – 15%

Make paw-print art or keepsakes – 13%

Read books aloud to them – 9%

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

“Heated Rivalry” star Connor Storrie has just been announced as an upcoming “Saturday Night Live” host, and fans of the steamy hockey romance can’t wait. On Saturday, SNL revealed via Instagram that the actor will make his hosting debut on the NBC sketch comedy series on February 28, with Mumford & Sons as musical guest. In his Instagram Stories, Storrie shared a screenshot of the news, adding: “I am the luckiest person in the world!”

Molly Ringwald might’ve become a household name thanks to her roles in John Hughes films like “Sixteen Candles” and “Pretty in Pink,” but she isn’t lobbying for remakes of the coming-of-age classics, and she doesn’t think the late Hughes would, either. At the Sundance Film Festival, she remarked: “They can’t be made without the permission of [the late] John Hughes, and he didn’t want the films to be remade.” But that doesn’t mean Ringwald isn’t open to new interpretations of the stories at the center of the iconic films. She noted that of all Hughes’ films, the most relevant likely remains the 1985 cult-classic “The Breakfast Club”. She said she thinks it would be OK if a new movie was made “that takes from ‘[The] Breakfast Club’ and then builds on [it], and represents this generation’s issues rather than to try to recreate what was of a different time.”

The creators of "Stranger Things" are taking audiences back in time for Netflix‘s upcoming animated series, following the Hawkins crew in the winter of 1985. The trailer for "Stranger Things: Tales from ’85", released on Monday, warns that “something survived” after the events of Season 2, when 'Eleven' seemingly closed the gate to the Upside Down for good. It’ll be up to the kids to figure out what, exactly, is haunting the town this time in what is being called an “untold story”. Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 arrives on Netflix April 23. SCOOP OF THE DAY

Those afraid of Friday the 13th experience different symptoms, ranging mild anxiety to complete panic attacks. Many avoid going to work, traveling, or making big purchases. In fact, US businesses lose about $900 million on the dreaded date. But these fears are unfounded. A study by the Dutch Centre for Insurance Statistics revealed that fewer traffic accidents occur on Friday the 13th than on other Fridays. The number of fires and thefts reported is also much lower. And for the brave, today may prove to be extremely lucky. Retailers often offer discounts to encourage people to shop.

WORST OPENING LINES FOR VALENTINES CARDS:

• “With just a few glaring exceptions, you’re more beautiful than the day we met.”

• “I want you like a dog wants a muscular leg.”

• “I love the way you look, the way you clean, the way you cook.”

• “I need you like someone with the squirts needs Pepto Bismol.”

• “How do I love thee? Let me count the way …”

WEIRD NEWS

A young boy in Huaihua, China, surprised even veteran firefighters after getting a small combination padlock stuck in his nose. It’s unclear how it happened, though adults suspect he was playing with the lock when it became lodged, leaving him with what looked like an unusual “bull ring.” His parents tried to remove it but stopped when it caused too much pain and risked injury. Firefighters were called and quickly realized pulling it out could damage the boy’s septum. Instead, they carefully cut through the lock with shears. Remarkably, the child stayed calm throughout the ordeal and later promised never to put objects up his nose again. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yc77n5rv

THE LIST

STRANGE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ARE CONSIDERED BAD LUCK:

(Yes, Friday the 13th can be daunting, but in some cultures, so are these…)

⇒ Wishing someone ‘Happy Birthday’ before their birthday: Many Germans believe doing so will cause misfortune to everyone involved. Instead, they sometimes gather the night before a birthday and begin celebrating exactly at midnight.

⇒ Changing your bed on a Friday: An old wives’ tales says if you turn your mattress that day, you’ll be cursed with bad dreams. Others say the bad-luck day is Sunday.

⇒ Carrying bananas on a ship: In the 1700s, many ships that were lost or shipwrecked were carrying bananas, so sailors, who were a superstitious bunch, decided that bananas on a boat meant bad news.

⇒ Renaming a boat: This goes back to ancient times, when sailors believed that the name of every boat was written in the ledger of Poseidon. If you dared change the name of a boat, you’d incur the sea god’s wrath.

⇒ Mixing beers: In the Czech Republic, whose people drink more beer per capita than anywhere else, it’s believed that if you pour one type of beer into a mug containing another type, you’re in for some misfortune.

⇒ Tuesday the 13th: While many cultures see Friday the 13th as bad news, in Spain, the 13th day of the month is unlucky when it falls on a Tuesday. In Spanish, the word for Tuesday is “Martes,” which comes from “Mars”, the Roman god of war, so Tuesday spells trouble.
