SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Nearly half of parents (47%) say children should never swear, while 35% say it depends on the situation…and 6% call profanity “no big deal.” The poll of almost 1,700 US parents of kids 6-17 also found that children most often pick up curse words from friends and classmates, and from the media, but the parents themselves are also responsible sometimes. Teens are more likely to swear at least occasionally (37%), as opposed to younger children (14%). Parents said they respond to blue language in varied ways, including telling kids to stop (41%), explaining why (38%), ignoring it (14%), or punishing (6%). Here are some additional findings…

Parents who watch their own language around kids: 57%

Parents who restrict kids’ media exposure: 39%

Parents who ask others not to swear around their child: 28%

Parents who discourage certain friendships: 20%

Parents who admit they’re partly responsible for swearing: 58%

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

The family is getting back together for the latest installment in the “Fast & Furious” franchise. Universal announced that the forthcoming sequel in the racing series is titled “Fast Forever”, and is set for theatrical release March 17, 2028. It follows director Louis Leterrier’s “Fast X”, which hit theaters in 2023. Franchise star Vin Diesel, known for his role as ‘Dominic Toretto’, celebrated the news on Instagram, posting a photo of himself with late co-star Paul Walker, who played ‘Brian O’Conner’ in the films. Walker died in November 2013 while Furious 7 was in production, and his character’s scenes were completed using CGI, archival footage and the use of brothers Caleb and Cody Walker as stand-ins.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” won 4 prizes, including Film Of The Year, at the 46th annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards. Anderson also won Director of the Year and Screenwriter of the Year, while Sean Penn was named Supporting Actor of the Year for his role in the film. Jessie Buckley won Actress of the Year for her role in Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet”. Timothée Chalamet took Actor of the Year for “Marty Supreme”. Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” earned the Technical Achievement Award for Ludwig Göransson’s music, and Amy Madigan won Supporting Actress of the Year for “Weapons”.

After years of uncertainty, the long-discussed “Rambo” prequel is finally moving forward and headed toward the movie release calendar. Noah Centineo is set to play a young ‘John Rambo’, but Sylvester Stallone once had a very different vision for who would wear the red headband and dog tags. In a resurfaced clip from “The Tonight Show”, recently shared by OutstandingScreenplays, the action icon revealed that Centineo wasn’t his original pick to take over the character. That distinction, somewhat surprisingly, went to Ryan Gosling.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Cold weather may make us crave warm, comforting foods, but letting meals burn can come with risks. Charring meats at high temperatures can create chemicals like PAHs and HCAs, while over-browning starchy foods produces acrylamide, all of which are linked to cancer in lab studies. Evidence in humans is limited, but experts say frequent consumption should be avoided. Burnt food can also irritate digestion and destroy nutrients. Aim for golden, not black, and cook ‘low and slow’ when possible.

Frozen juice from concentrate is heading for the deep freeze…for good. As of April, Minute Maid is discontinuing its frozen juice products – including canned orange juice, lemonade, Fruitopia fruit punch and Five Alive. Parent company Coca-Cola confirmed it is exiting the frozen juice category in both Canada and the US, as demand continues to slide. The move follows a similar decision last year by Canadian juice maker Lassonde, which pulled its frozen-from-concentrate brands amid waning sales. With both major brands and store-label versions gone, experts say frozen concentrate has reached the end of its product life cycle, signaling Canadians may soon be unable to buy it anywhere after decades on shelves. [Frozen orange juice concentrate in the US is still sold under other labels, including some store brands.]

WEIRD NEWS

A Mississippi appeals court has overturned the firing of former assistant principal Toby Price, who was dismissed after reading to students on Read Across America Day. The problem? The book he read is called: "I Need a New Butt". The Hinds County School Board had argued he caused kids “unnecessary embarrassment,” but the court found no evidence to support that claim. Judges noted no students were singled out, and that the book’s exaggerated premise was clearly understood as humor, and similar books are available in the school library.
