SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Wow. A new study suggests honesty isn’t always the best — or more specifically — the most moral choice…when giving feedback, that is. Research in the British Journal of Social Psychology found that people judge “kind liars” – those who soften or sugarcoat criticism – as more moral than those who bluntly tell the truth, especially when the recipient is emotionally vulnerable. While nearly 60% of people say they want honest feedback for themselves, their preferences shift when choosing for others who struggle with criticism. Participants favored feedback providers who adjusted their honesty based on emotional resilience, viewing them as empathetic, rather than inconsistent. The most disliked approach was misreading the room. That would involve being harsh with sensitive people and patronizing those who can handle the truth. The takeaway: Morality in feedback isn’t about consistency, but compassion. Also: Honesty isn’t necessarily always the best policy!

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are coming to YouTube later this year in a new CG-animated series aimed at preschoolers. “Teeny Mutant Ninja Turtles” (working title) will follow ‘Leonardo’, ‘Raphael’, ‘Donatello’ and ‘Michelangelo’ in their childhood years, introducing audiences to their first adventures as ninjas-in-training. 30 episodes will be released, at 4 minutes each. Also coming this September is “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splinter’s Dojo,” an illustrated novel focused on the middle school demographic, and “The Last Ronin,” an expanded adult novel adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name, in June.

Multi-million-dollar homes belonging to George Clooney and Russell Brand have been flooded after weeks of continuous rainfall caused England’s River Thames to burst its banks. Aerial images show floodwaters encroaching on the properties, which are located close to the river in picturesque towns and villages near London. Boasting 9 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms, Clooney’s mansion with wife Amal is valued at about $18 million. In recent weeks, the UK has been deluged by continuous rainfall, with some areas seeing downpours nearly every day of the year so far.

DID YA KNOW!?

DID YOU KNOW… The longest place name in the English-speaking world has 85 letters. It is a hill in New Zealand whose name describes the story of a man who played a flute for his loved one. Locals usually shorten it for convenience.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Would You Pay for Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp? Meta has confirmed that it is exploring subscription tiers for its 3 biggest apps - Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, promising a “premium experience” with exclusive features and more control over "how they share and connect". Instagram may soon let subscribers watch stories secretly, access unlimited audience lists, and see who doesn’t follow back. AI is central to the strategy: Meta’s $2 billion acquisition of AI agent Manus could bring new AI shortcuts, and its Vibes tool, previously free, may move to a freemium model with extra video creation for subscribers. While details for Facebook and WhatsApp remain scarce, Meta plans to experiment with various bundles, learning from its limited success with Meta Verified. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/328taxzd

WEIRD NEWS

It is possible to actually be allergic to cold. For most, winter just means bundling up. But for people with cold urticaria, exposure to cold can trigger hives, swelling, or even life-threatening reactions. This rare condition causes the immune system to misfire when the skin meets cold air, water, or objects. First described in 1792, it affects mostly young adults and is more common in women. Antihistamines can help, and some sufferers even outgrow it, but triggers must be managed carefully.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

THE LIST

HANDY HOUSEHOLD HACKS:

Need to freshen the air in your bathroom? Put a few drops of essential oil on the inside of the cardboard toilet paper tube.

To deep-clean your dryer’s lint trap, put an empty toilet paper or paper towel roll on the end of your vacuum hose, and squeeze it in flat to get it into narrow spaces.

To clean a microwave of dried food particles, fill a bowl with water, a slosh of white vinegar, and a sliced lemon. Heat it in the microwave for 5 minutes, then let it sit there for another 5. Everything will wipe off easily.

To dust Venetian blinds, use a clean, dry 3-inch paintbrush.

To prevent grit from building up between shower tiles, keep a soap-dispensing dish brush in your shower caddy, and give the walls a quick, soapy scrubbing every time you shower.

To make your stainless-steel sink look new again, give it a good wash and dry, and then sprinkle it with flour. Buffing will bring the shine back.

To clean your kitchen exhaust fan filter, add a scoop of OxiClean to a bucket of boiling water, then dunk the filter for a few minutes, rinse, and dry flat on a towel. All the grease will be gone.

To tame flyaway hairs, spray a little hairspray on a toothbrush and use it to smooth those hairs down.

Wrinkly clothes? Wet and wring out a washcloth and throw it in the dryer with your garment. Dry it for 5-10 minutes.
