SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Crossword puzzles may do more for aging brains than a trip to the gym. A new study from Georgetown University tracked more than 20,000 adults and found exercise alone didn’t significantly slow mental decline. What did help, especially after age 65, were mentally demanding activities like reading, writing, and crossword puzzles. Researchers found these brain workouts were among the strongest predictors of staying mentally sharp, suggesting that keeping your mind busy may be one of the best defenses against cognitive decline.

One of the most swoon-worthy lines in “Heated Rivalry” — “I’m coming to the cottage” is about to become a literal travel plan for fans. The lakefront home that serves as the setting for the season finale of Crave’s hit gay hockey drama, “The Cottage,” will be available for stays on Airbnb. Dubbed the Barlochan cottage, the 3-bedroom retreat in Ontario’s Muskoka Lakes has been the subject of intense fan discussion since the episode aired. Starting March 3, guests can book weekend stays at the Barlochan cottage throughout May, at $248.10 CAD per night — a nod to Hollander and Rozanov’s jersey numbers: 24 and 81. Booking for the summer starts June 1, with the price to be announced then.
Ryan Coogler’s “X-Files” reboot has officially gotten a pilot order at Hulu, with Danielle Deadwyler set to star. Here’s an official description: “Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.” In Feb. 2024, “X-Files” creator Chris Carter gave Coogler his blessing to move forward with the series, noting that he won’t be involved, but will be its “cheerleader.”
DID YA KNOW!?
DID YOU KNOW… There are stars that are larger than our entire solar system. Red supergiants like Betelgeuse are so massive that, if placed at the center of our system, they would engulf several planets.

OF THE DAY
Scientists say your dreams actually solve problems while you sleep – and can even be steered in specific directions. In a study, researchers at Northwestern University had 20 participants work on brain teasers paired with unique sound cues. During REM sleep, the researchers replayed some of those sounds, nudging dreams toward particular puzzles. For “targeted dreamers,” solving rates doubled from 20-40%. Surprisingly, puzzles that appeared in dreams that participants couldn’t remember were still solved 67% of the time, far outperforming lucid dreams. The findings suggest REM sleep fuels creative thinking, making unusual connections that the waking brain misses – and that “sleeping on it” may be more powerful than we realize.

WEIRD NEWS
A German practice called “lüften,” or “house burping” in North America, is gaining attention online. The concept is simple: open your windows a few times a day to let stale air out and fresh air in, even during winter. Long part of German culture, it helps prevent mold, as tenants often agree to regularly air out their homes. The trend resurfaced during the pandemic when former Chancellor Angela Merkel recommended it to limit COVID-19 spread. Research supports the practice: the US EPA notes that indoor pollutants from furniture, paint, and cleaners can be 2-5 times higher inside than outside. A few minutes of ventilation could improve indoor air quality and overall health.

THE LIST
THE BEST PLAYS OF ALL TIME:
1. Hamlet – William Shakespeare
A towering tragedy that blends poetry, philosophy, comedy, and mystery, Hamlet endlessly rewards reinterpretation. Its psychological depth and moral ambiguity make it perennially modern.
2. Long Day’s Journey into Night – Eugene O’Neill
This brutally honest, autobiographical drama exposes a family unraveling under addiction and regret. Its emotional rawness defines the pinnacle of American family tragedy.
3. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? – Edward Albee
A razor-sharp battle of language and power, the play uses blistering dialogue to strip its characters bare. Wit, cruelty, and vulnerability collide over one long, drunken night.
4. Death of a Salesman – Arthur Miller
Miller’s modern tragedy transforms an ordinary man’s life into something mythic and devastating. Willy Loman’s collapse is heartbreaking precisely because it feels so familiar.
5. Oedipus Rex – Sophocles
The blueprint for tragic drama, this play proves that knowing the ending doesn’t weaken the impact. Its slow, relentless revelation remains a masterclass in storytelling and fate.
