SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

It would seem a lot of youth these days see that time-honored right of passage: getting their driver’s licence…as something they’ll do down the road. Stats show a growing number of Gen Z teens are delaying getting their driver’s licenses, leaving many Gen X parents in the role of full-time chauffeurs. About half of U.S. 16-year-olds had licenses in 1983; by 2022, that figure had dropped to 25%, and indications are that number has dropped even more since. Parents cite fear of accidents, rising costs for driver’s ed and insurance, and stricter laws as key barriers to their kids getting their permits. Teens also rely more on rideshare apps and digital social lives, reducing the need to drive. Experts say most teens eventually get licensed – just later than previous generations.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Kunal Nayyar‘s recent interview with The i Paper is going viral, thanks to “The Big Bang Theory” actor’s revelation that he frequently goes on GoFundMe to anonymously donate to campaigns that give money towards medical bills for families. Fortune magazine reported earlier this year that Nayyar’s reported net worth is $45 million. Nayyar said that money has given him “greater freedom and the greatest gift is the ability to…change people’s lives.” He said he supports animal charities, but what he really loves to do “is go on GoFundMe at night and just pay random families’ medical bills.” He calls that his “masked vigilante thing!” Nayyar starred as ‘Raj’ on all 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory.

From AMC to Regal Cinemas, movie theater chains across the US are going all out for “Scream 7.” Newly released concession accessories, including a bloody “Ghostface” popcorn bucket, have fans “screaming” with excitement. According to Cinemark, the “chilling merch inspired by Ghostface and the latest installment of the iconic horror saga” is “perfect for every slasher fan.” In addition to concession accessories, like themed cups or popcorn buckets, some theaters will also be selling ghost pepper flavored popcorn, adult beverages and a travel sweepstakes. Scream 7 opened Feb. 27.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

We recently celebrated the beginning of the Lunar New Year. It’s the Year of the Fire Horse.

Why do we call it a “pair” of pants when they’re just one garment? Well, the phrase has deep roots. The word ‘pants’ comes from pantaloons, named after Pantalone, a character in Italian theatre. Early pants weren’t one piece at all. They were 2 separate leg coverings, or “split hose,” tied together at the waist. Even after the legs were sewn together, the language stuck. Linguistically, pants became a ‘plurale tantum’: a single object that’s always described in the plural, like scissors or glasses, or pliers or tongs.

WEIRD NEWS

A preschool teacher has been charged after allegedly giving laxatives to toddlers in order to get them sent home. Police say several parents reported that their children had been given chewable laxatives at the St. Charles IL daycare. The 23-year-old teacher later turned herself in and admitted to administering them. The facility requires sick children to stay home for 24 hours, and authorities allege she used the medication to reduce her workload because she felt overwhelmed. The teacher was released, pending a court date.
