THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!
Dear John,
I've been vol-untold (told to volunteer) to help with my son's graduation from elementary school. I didn't want to be involved, but the teacher told me my unique perspective would be welcomed. It has not been even close to welcome. I'm not from here. My family moved here at the beginning of the school year. We're still the new family. I'm OK with that. The teacher is trying to get us connected, but I don't really need to get connected. I'm actually very OK with just bringing my son to school and letting him meet the friends he likes. The teacher is trying to get me to “befriend” the other moms and get my son to like their kids. OK. I would rather let my son pick his friends based on who he likes and their common interests, rather than me sipping wine with their moms. So far, each meeting has been a train wreck. I'm still going because we're almost done with this grade and this school, but I wish I could have just said no. I have two more meetings. Any advice on how I can actually make this time meaningful, instead of the waste it's been so far? Or, How do I get out of this all together?
Signed – Quiet Momma

SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Fertility isn’t just about women – men’s diets matter too. Dutch researchers found that higher intake of ultra-processed foods like snacks, sugary drinks, and processed meats is linked to lower chances of conceiving, and men with the highest intake had up to 36% reduced fertility. For women, processed foods didn’t affect conception, but were tied to slightly smaller embryos early in pregnancy. The findings highlight how both partners’ diets can play a role in fertility and early development.

One of the darkest books you may have read in high school is getting a Netflix adaptation. The trailer for “Lord of the Flies” just dropped, proving there’s a lot to fear about the phrase “boys will be boys.” The upcoming series premiered on the BBC in February. Based on William Golding’s 1954 novel, Lord of the Flies tells the story of a group of British schoolboys who crash-land on a deserted island. As they are forced to fend for themselves, leaders fight for power and allegiances form — until the island spirals into chaos. Lord of the Flies hits Netflix on May 4. “The Housemaid” author Freida McFadden has just ripped off her own mask, saying she’s done living a “Hannah Montana”-esque double life after concealing her true identity and using a pen name for years. The popular author revealed her real name is Sara Cohen — a doctor from New York who treats brain disorders when she’s not cranking out her next thriller novel. (Talk about a plot twist!) McFadden hid her true identity for years, but people began connecting the dots, and now she says it’s was time to come forward.

SCOOP
OF THE DAY
I just learned that April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month.
It wasn’t just you — your iPhone HAS been butchering texts for years – but Apple says it has finally taken steps to correct autocorrect. The latest software update (iOS 26.4) fixes a long-standing keyboard bug that caused “ghost letters,” where keystrokes wouldn’t register properly when typing quickly. That issue made autocorrect worse, since missing letters led to even more garbled words and sentences. With the fix, typing accuracy has improved, especially for fast typers, and fewer nonsensical errors show up. Here’s the problem, though: The update isn’t a full solution. Other frustrations – like wrong-word substitutions or keys producing unexpected letters – still persist. That’s because autocorrect still relies on the system which learns from your habits – but isn’t perfect. The bottom line is this: Autocorrect is better than before, but far from fixed. And your iPhone may still have a mind of its own!

WEIRD NEWS
Unhappy with the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, Shaquille O’Neal is launching his own professional dunk league. Partnering with Warner Bros. Discovery and Authentic Brands, the new “Dunkman” league will debut this summer with 24 elite dunkers competing across 4 live events. Finalists will battle for a world championship and a $500,000 prize. Games will air across TNT, TBS, truTV and HBO Max, with additional content online. The move reflects a growing trend of media companies creating their own sports properties – and Shaq’s belief that dunking deserves a bigger spotlight. Dunkman got its start as a 6-episode competition last year.

THE LIST
HIGHEST-PAID ACTORS OF 2025:
According to Forbes…
1. Adam Sandler: $48 million. Still Netflix’s golden goose, he starred in “Happy Gilmore 2” and “Jay Kelly”, snagging awards buzz and cashing massive guaranteed checks.
2. Tom Cruise: $46 million. Took a lower upfront payday for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” but made it back (and then some) with a share of box office profits.
3. Mark Wahlberg: $44 million. Streaming’s favorite action guy starred in “The Family Plan 2” and “Play Dirty”, plus kept busy producing.
4. Scarlett Johansson: $43 million. Led the blockbuster “Jurassic World: Rebirth” and made her directorial debut with “Eleanor the Great”.
5. Brad Pitt: $41 million. Starred in “F1”, landing a rare profit-sharing deal that paid off big-time.
6. Denzel Washington: $38 million. Earned a massive payday for “Highest 2 Lowest”, plus steady income from his legendary back catalog. (…all the while saying to reporters that he’s “not a Hollywood actor”!)
7. Jack Black: $28 million. Continued his animated dominance post-Mario with more family hits and a reboot of “Anaconda”. (Yet he still dresses like he lives in a bus shelter. But, hey…so does Adam Sandler!)
8. Jason Momoa: $28 million. Cashed in on “A Minecraft Movie” success while transitioning to new DC roles.
9. Daniel Craig: $27 million. Still collecting big Netflix paydays from the “Knives Out” universe, with more on the way.
10: Three-way tie at $26 million:
– Millie Bobby Brown: Final season of “Stranger Things” + Netflix deals
– John Cena: Streaming comedies + DC’s “Peacemaker”
– Reese Witherspoon: “The Morning Show” + her producing empire
(Noticeably absent for 2025 are some of 2024’s heavy hitters like Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds. We guess they’re laying low until their next huge sequel!)
