SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
I’m sure we’ve all said at one point that we wished summer could last forever. A new study published in ‘Environmental Research Letters’ suggests that summers across much of the Northern Hemisphere are not only getting longer, they’re also arriving more abruptly…and becoming significantly hotter. Researchers analyzed global temperature data from 1961-2023 and found that in much of North America, Europe, and Asia, summer-like conditions now last about 30 days longer than they did in the 1960s. Since 1990, summers have been expanding by 5-7 extra days per decade. While a longer summer might SOUND nice, the study also found that oceans are warming even faster than land in some regions, amplifying the seasonal shift. Scientists warn that with summer arriving and ending more abruptly, it leaves less time for ecosystems, infrastructure, and people to adjust.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
A celebrity cameo? In “The Devil Wears Prada 2?” Groundbreaking. After it was confirmed that at least one pop culture superstar — Lady Gaga herself — would make a cameo in the upcoming Devil Wears Prada sequel starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, “Today” show host Craig Melvin accidentally revealed live on air that another star will appear in the film: Melvin’s colleague, Jenna Bush Hager. After Hager reacted in shock, Savannah Guthrie, who returned to Today this week for the first time since her mother’s highly publicized disappearance, quipped: “This is live. You cannot tell Craig anything!”
Cameron Diaz has found a new starring vehicle in a sequel to the ’80s cult comedy “Troop Beverly Hills”. Released in 1989, Troop Beverly Hills was based on events in the life of writer-producer Ava Fries. A star vehicle for Shelley Long at the height of her post-“Cheers” film run, the comedy had her playing a pampered Beverly Hills housewife trying to prove to her daughter that she can rough it as a Wilderness Girls leader. Diaz will next be seen in Jonah Hill’s Apple dark comedy “Outcome”, out now.

OF THE DAY
April 22 is Earth Day. The most recycled things in the world are: aluminum cans and plastic jugs.
Curling is getting a flashy makeover – and drawing inspiration from wrestling, of all things – with the launch of Rock League, a new professional competition aiming to shake off the sport’s quiet, traditional image. With this week’s competition debut at Toronto’s historic Maple Leaf Gardens, the league blends curling with the high-energy atmosphere of WWE and the fan-driven spectacle of PDC World Darts Championship. Think costumes, walk-on music…and a party-like vibe. Featuring 60 top athletes, including several Olympians, teams are competing across men’s, women’s, and mixed events with a $250,000 prize pool up for grabs. Fans are encouraged to get creative with costumes rink-side. Organizers hope the bold format will attract new audiences and keep interest alive beyond the Olympic cycle, and plan to fully roll the league out next year.

“Chopped”, the Food Network reality cooking series, is getting a spinoff in which chefs are stranded on an island and must build their own kitchens to cook meals. Titled “Chopped Castaways,” the new survival-themed series blends cooking with endurance challenges, dropping 12 elite chefs on a remote island. Hosted by Ted Allen, the show will force contestants to build kitchens, win ingredients through physical tasks, and cook over open fire. The competition starts in teams before shifting to individual battles, leading to a $100,000 prize. The 8-episode season premieres May 12, on Food Network and streaming on HBO Max.

THE LIST
HIGHEST-PAID ACTORS OF 2025:
According to Forbes…
1. Adam Sandler: $48 million. Still Netflix’s golden goose, he starred in “Happy Gilmore 2” and “Jay Kelly”, snagging awards buzz and cashing massive guaranteed checks.
2. Tom Cruise: $46 million. Took a lower upfront payday for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” but made it back (and then some) with a share of box office profits.
3. Mark Wahlberg: $44 million. Streaming’s favorite action guy starred in “The Family Plan 2” and “Play Dirty”, plus kept busy producing.
4. Scarlett Johansson: $43 million. Led the blockbuster “Jurassic World: Rebirth” and made her directorial debut with “Eleanor the Great”.
5. Brad Pitt: $41 million. Starred in “F1”, landing a rare profit-sharing deal that paid off big-time.
6. Denzel Washington: $38 million. Earned a massive payday for “Highest 2 Lowest”, plus steady income from his legendary back catalog. (…all the while saying to reporters that he’s “not a Hollywood actor”!)
7. Jack Black: $28 million. Continued his animated dominance post-Mario with more family hits and a reboot of “Anaconda”. (Yet he still dresses like he lives in a bus shelter. But, hey…so does Adam Sandler!)
8. Jason Momoa: $28 million. Cashed in on “A Minecraft Movie” success while transitioning to new DC roles.
9. Daniel Craig: $27 million. Still collecting big Netflix paydays from the “Knives Out” universe, with more on the way.
10: Three-way tie at $26 million:
– Millie Bobby Brown: Final season of “Stranger Things” + Netflix deals
– John Cena: Streaming comedies + DC’s “Peacemaker”
– Reese Witherspoon: “The Morning Show” + her producing empire
(Noticeably absent for 2025 are some of 2024’s heavy hitters like Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds. We guess they’re laying low until their next huge sequel!)
