SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Cannabis may mess with your memory far more than previously thought, says new research from Washington State University. In a study, marijuana impaired 15 of 21 memory functions, including remembering future tasks, sequencing events, and distinguishing real memories from false ones. The study’s most striking finding was that test participants were significantly more likely to “recall” things that never happened. Surprisingly, higher doses didn’t worsen the effects. Researchers say the results reveal broader impacts of cannabis use than earlier studies suggested.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Kirsten Dunst is joining “The Housemaid” sequel. She’ll join Sydney Sweeney in the upcoming film “The Housemaid’s Secret”, which is based on the second book of Freida McFadden’s series of the same name. A plot description of the new film says Sweeney’s character, Millie, will “discover the truth behind the locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own.”

A first look at the fictional school of witchcraft and wizardry from HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series has finally been unveiled. The photo, posted to the show’s Instagram page, shows Dominic McLaughlin’s ‘Harry’ from behind as he walks towards the quidditch pitch. He’s wearing a red and gold cloak, representing Hogwarts’ Gryffindor house, and it has his last name and player number on the back. The series will follow young Harry as he discovers he’s a wizard, leaves his Muggle family behind, and sets off to attend Hogwarts. Along the way, he befriends ‘Ron’ and ‘Hermione Granger’, and battles ‘Lord Voldemort’. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mr3z744m

MomTok is moving to the West Coast. A “Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” spinoff show is in the works. The plan is for it to begin shooting this spring and premiere in the fall. People reports that the show will be set in Orange County, and as of now, Jen Affleck is the only original cast member who will star in the spinoff, alongside 9 new castmates.

JOKE OF THE DAY

(FROM HEIDI)
SCOOP OF THE DAY

It turns out getting a “perfect” night’s sleep…is almost a superstition. A survey of 2,000 people in the US found that two-thirds believe there’s a right (and wrong) way to sleep, and 76% stick to strict bedtime routines. Most agree that consistency helps: 79% said they sleep better when they follow the same habits each night. And some people’s preferences get oddly specific: many insist on sleeping on a certain side, far from the door, with just the right pillows. Gen Z prefers either a shirt and underwear or just underwear (both 21%), while millennials prefer to sport T-shirts and sweatpants (22%). Gen X and baby boomers are most comfortable in matching pajama sets. Temperature matters too, with 66°F (19°C) the sweet spot, and most people would rather be too cold than too hot. Still, perfect sleep is rare – with most reporting they average only 10 “great” nights of sleep per month.

Here are some of the more “unique” bedtime rituals that respondents said they use in order to get a good night’s sleep:

➠ “I rub the side of my foot against my bed before I go to sleep and it calms my body down.”

➠ “Listening to a short, calming story or piano music.”

➠ “I spray my pillow with lavender spray and turn on my little fan.”

➠ “Turning on my white noise machine about 10 minutes before I turn off the light.”

➠ “Eating peanut butter.”

➠ “Falling asleep to the Beverly Hillbillies.”

➠ “Drinking something hot and having the room cold.”

➠ “Lotion on my hands and feet.”

➠ “Getting my cat above my head.”

➠ “I have to lay with my phone right next to me or I don’t feel comfortable.”

➠ “Clicking the door handle times.”

WEIRD NEWS

A Florida hospital is suing a patient who has refused to leave her hospital room for months after being discharged. The woman was cleared to go in October but has remained in Room 373 of Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare ever since, prompting the hospital to seek a court order forcing her removal. The hospital claims it tried coordinating her departure and offering help, including transportation, but she declined. With no attorney listed, the patient is representing herself as the unusual case heads to a court hearing.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

On average, you’ll do THIS 4 to 6 times in the next 24 hours — and each time you do it, you’ll do it for about 14 to 16 minutes. What is it?

THE LIST

FOOD “NORMS” THAT AREN’T NECESSARILY NORMAL:

a Reddit user recently asked the “AskOldPeople” community to share their food habits growing up. Here are some of the most interesting answers…

→ “The whole concept of ‘snacks’ was quite foreign when I was a kid. It was either ‘wait for dinner’ or ‘you already ate.’ Things like sodas just weren’t in the fridge, although Kool-Aid was occasionally.”

→ “Snacks were ‘have an apple.’ If you weren’t hungry for an apple, you weren’t hungry.”

→ “We didn’t eat out back then, except maybe on a special occasion, and lunch was usually just a sandwich.

→ “McDonald’s didn’t come to town until I was a teenager; fast food didn’t exist.”

→ “We didn’t take water bottles or snacks everywhere, and you generally didn’t see people eating or drinking anything unless they were socializing or having a meal.”

→ “Portion sizes are vastly different…Cokes were originally six ounces. Six! A large Coke at McDonald’s is five times that now.

→ “We had meat and potatoes and MAYBE an iceberg lettuce salad for dinner every night. A classic example would be Hamburger Helper or ground beef and mashed potatoes…my mom would put leeks in water, which was our vegetable.”

→ “The microwave oven doesn’t get nearly enough credit for how it changed what, how, and when we eat. Hot meals were no longer a luxury.

→ “I can count on one hand the number of times my parents ordered pizza when I was a kid (that’s why pizza day in school was such a treat!).

→ “There was bread at every meal, and our meals were eaten together at the table. Afterward, I cleaned up and closed the kitchen for the night by turning on the light over the stove.”

→ “Our big snack was popcorn. If I wanted a dessert, I had to make it from scratch. Tang powder was a dessert (like Pixy Stix). Candy was eaten only during holidays.”
