SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Smartphones may be doing more than changing how people communicate – they could also be contributing to falling birth rates. A new study from Middlebury College found that the rise of the iPhone may account for as much as half of the decline in U.S. fertility rates since 2007. Researchers analyzed data from the years following the iPhone’s launch and concluded that smartphone use could be to blame for up to 52% of the drop in births among women aged 15-55. Experts say the devices aren’t harming fertility directly, but are changing behavior by reducing face-to-face interaction, dating opportunities, and sexual activity.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
“The Office” star Rainn Wilson says the beloved NBC sitcom could never have been been made in today’s cultural climate. Wilson said to Fox that it “would be too hard to be as politically incorrect as the show was.” He added that there was a lot of “really inappropriate” humor in The Office, especially from his character, ‘Dwight Schrute’, and Steve Carell’s ‘Michael Scott’. According to Wilson, even though Michael and Dwight were portrayed as having no “self-awareness,” their antics definitely wouldn’t fly in 2026.
“Obsession” has set dozens of records at this point, mainly with its earnings, but it also held a critical one as well. It was the highest Rotten Tomatoes-scored horror movie of 2026 and one of the highest-scored mainstream releases of the year, period. While its current score of 94% is still very high, it has dropped a few points since release, and the horror film “Leviticus” has passed it, with a verified 95% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics ahead of its wide release this weekend. Leviticus tells the story of 2 boys in a relationship who end up facing a violent entity that takes the form of themselves, taunting and haunting the other.

OF THE DAY

After surviving a devastating 2017 California wildfire that destroyed hundreds of homes and killed 6 people, aerospace engineer Linda Cantey helped create a fire-resistant backyard refuge called the Fort. Inspired by underground mining safety chambers, the bunker can withstand extreme heat and flames, sheltering up to 8 people for 4 hours. The Fort is one of several new innovations aimed at protecting people from increasingly severe wildfires, alongside underground hydraulic homes and even goat-grazing services that clear vegetation, which can help spread wildfire. The solutions are not cheap. A herd of goats can cost upwards of $3,000 a day to clear a field. The Fort bunker starts at $60,000.
