SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
A new study suggests AI hiring systems favor resumes written by…AI. Researchers found applicant tracking systems (ATS) were up to 60% more likely to shortlist candidates whose resumes were generated by matching large language models. The study warns this “AI self-preferencing” could unfairly disadvantage equally qualified applicants who write resumes themselves or use different AI tools. Researchers tested more than 2,200 human-written resumes across 24 occupations, creating AI-generated versions with models including GPT-4 and DeepSeek, to compare hiring outcomes. The problem was “most severe” in accounting, sales and finance.

Kevin Hart has named the one celebrity he believes should never be roasted: Oprah Winfrey. On “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, he drew a firm line at poking fun at the iconic talk show host while discussing who could be a future candidate for Netflix’s popular roast specials. Hart first suggested LeBron James. But when Kimmel proposed Oprah, Hart immediately shot down the idea, saying: “That’d be like spray painting the Sistine Chapel. If I found out that Oprah said she wanted to do it, I’m driving 100 miles per hour to Oprah’s house. You cannot do this. No shot.”
In today’s episode of amusing internet conspiracy theories: Does Guy Fieri actually eat what you see on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives?” Doctor Spaghetti is a Twitch streamer who normally doesn’t have much interest in food media, but during a recent streaming session a follower suggested that Fieri never actually eats the food on his show. So, the doctor compiled a YouTube analysis of a mountain of clips, noting that Fieri often keeps food in his cheek during a shot and that you rarely actually see him swallow anything. In addition, Fieri is remarkably able to carry on a clear conversation right after he fills his mouth with food, and Doctor Spaghetti even caught an instance of Fieri moving a pair of chopsticks to his mouth…with nothing in them. OF THE DAY
Thinking about taking a break from social media? A new review suggests a digital detox may not improve your mood as much as you’d expect. Researchers analyzed 10 studies involving more than 4,600 people who took social media breaks ranging from one day to a month. They found no significant changes in happiness, negative emotions, or life satisfaction. But experts say there may still be a benefit to taking a break from social media if you think it will be helpful. Rather than quitting entirely, they suggest focusing on mindful, intentional use – and maybe using a timer that limits your time spent scrolling on certain apps.
If your morning coffee pick-me-up doesn’t seem to last long enough, grapefruit might offer a boost. The fruit contains compounds that can slow the breakdown of certain substances in the body, leading some to speculate it could extend your caffeine buzz. One Florida coffee chain is even testing the idea with a grapefruit-and-espresso pairing. Experts say any extra buzz would likely be minor and inconsistent, and point out that grapefruit can interact with many prescription medications, making the trend potentially risky, despite the fruit’s well-known health benefits.

WEIRD NEWS
Because – why not? Funeral homes are getting a colorful makeover, thanks to a growing number of death-care professionals using social media to challenge traditional ideas about mourning. Ohio funeral director Dan Madden has attracted millions of views online by showcasing eye-catching products such as hot pink caskets, cheetah-print urns, and custom designs inspired by everything from gaming controllers to butterflies. Madden says the goal is to make conversations about death less intimidating and offer families more personalized ways to remember loved ones. He’s part of a broader trend of funeral directors using platforms like TikTok to educate the public, reduce the stigma around death, and encourage people to think about end-of-life planning in a more open way. THE LIST
CONDIMENTS YOU DON’T NEED TO REFRIGERATE AFTER OPENING:
According to a panel of food safety experts…
Vinegar: Thanks to its high acidity and fermentation process, vinegar naturally resists harmful bacteria and is very shelf-stable. But flavored or homemade vinegars should be refrigerated.
Mustard: Most, including yellow and Dijon, can safely stay at room temperature because of their acidity and salt content. Refrigeration mainly helps preserve flavor and quality over time.
Hot Sauce: Vinegar-based hot sauces are generally safe to keep in the cupboard after opening. Their acidity and salt prevent bacterial growth, although fresh-style or low-acid kinds may need refrigeration.
Nut Butter: Commercial peanut and other nut butters containing stabilizers and preservatives can usually be stored at room temperature for months. Natural or homemade versions should be refrigerated after opening to prevent spoilage.
Cooking Oil: Since oil contains no water, bacteria can’t easily grow in it. Store it in a cool, dark place away from heat, as warmth and oxygen can make it go rancid.
Fish Sauce: High salt levels and fermentation make fish sauce remarkably shelf-stable. Refrigeration isn’t necessary for most commercial brands, though it can help maintain quality.
Soy Sauce: Its high salt content and fermentation process help keep it safe at room temperature. Refrigeration is optional, but can help preserve its flavor and color longer.
Ketchup: The combination of acidity, sugar, and salt allows ketchup to remain safe outside the fridge. An opened bottle can stay at room temperature for about a month, although homemade and low-sugar versions should be refrigerated.
