SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Uh-oh. A new study suggests one of the most common weight-loss tips may not work as advertised. Researchers from Cornell and Penn State have found that people who drank more water during their meal actually ended up eating MORE food and consuming more calories. Every extra cup of water was linked to a larger meal, even though test participants also reported feeling fuller afterward. Researchers think alternating bites of food with sips of water may refresh the palate, making continuing to eat seem appealing. The findings suggest that drinking water before a meal – not during it – may be a better strategy for curbing appetite.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Paramount and Activision’s upcoming “Call of Duty” movie will be set in the “Modern Warfare” universe. Director and co-writer Peter Berg announced the news during Fanatics Fest in New York City, confirming that the film will adapt the franchise’s most popular and recognizable subseries. Call of Duty is one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, with more than 500 million copies sold worldwide. The live-action adaptation is slated to hit theaters June 30, 2028.

Natalie Portman famously saw a twisted version of herself in mirrors as part of her Oscar-winning performance as a tortured ballerina in “Black Swan”. She may experience the same queasy sensation if “Unherd” writer Valerie Stivers is to be believed. Stivers suggested in a July 17 column that Rachel Cusk’s upcoming novel, “Life of M”, is a thinly-veiled portrait of Portman. The novel, set for release on Aug. 25, centers on a famous actress, ‘M’, and a writer tapped to chronicle her life. Even though Portman is said to be friends with the author, Stivers wrote: “A Cusk book about you is never going to be flattering.”

HGTV’s upcoming renovation show is one for the ‘90s kids! The network’s newest series “Totally 90s House”, premiering Aug. 26, will be hosted by “Family Matters” star Jaleel White and feature a star-studded cast of ‘90s icons, who all also happen to have a passion for home design. “Beverly Hills, 90210’s” Brian Austin Green, “7th Heaven’s” Beverley Mitchell and “Full House’s” Jodie Sweetin will team up against Melissa Joan Hart from “Clarissa Explains It All”, “The Cosby Show’s” Keshia Knight Pulliam and brothers Matthew Lawrence (“Boy Meets World”) and Joey Lawrence (“Blossom”) as they search for and overhaul the ultimate ‘90s house.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Would you be OK with using a self-checkout…if it meant you got a discount? New York lawmaker, Nikki Lucas, thinks shoppers deserve a break for doing the cashier’s job themselves. Her proposed bill would require grocery stores and retailers that sell food, such as Target and Walmart, to give customers a 10% discount when they use self-checkout. Supporters argue stores save money by reducing staffing, so some of those savings should go back to shoppers. The proposal is still in the early stages and hasn’t been approved. Other states have introduced rules that limit self-checkout lanes or require more employees to supervise them.

A tiny drone could soon become an awesome weapon in the fight against mosquitoes. Tornyol, a U.S. startup, is developing AI-powered micro-drones that are designed to detect and “shoot down” mosquitoes in mid-air, potentially cutting eradication costs by 100 times. The company recently demonstrated its first “air-to-air kill” by using a small drone to knock down a moth in a test area. The 40-gram drones use microphones, ultrasonic sensors, and AI software to identify insects by their wing sounds. Researchers hope swarms of them could one day clear entire urban areas of mosquitoes without chemicals. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mufzjpbe

WEIRD NEWS

That stressful email sitting in your overloaded inbox could literally take your breath away. Experts say many people unconsciously hold their breath - or breathe more shallowly while reading or writing emails. This is a habit known as "email apnea." It's a stress response that can also happen while texting, scrolling, or working on a computer. Shallow breathing keeps your body in "fight-or-flight" mode, increasing anxiety, muscle tension and fatigue. The good news? Simply becoming aware of your breathing can help. Before opening your inbox, try taking a slow, deep breath, relaxing your shoulders and unclenching your jaw. Your nervous system - and your inbox - may feel a little less overwhelming.

THE LIST

FOR ARGUMENTS’ SAKE:

How you argue may matter more than what you argue ABOUT. According to psychologist and well-being coach Angela Cook, it’s often not the disagreement itself that harms a relationship, but the way couples treat each other during it. She says to avoid these 6 common habits, that can quietly damage trust, communication and long-term happiness…

1. Contempt: Eye-rolling, sarcasm and mocking may seem harmless, but they make a partner feel belittled and are considered one of the biggest predictors of relationship breakdown.

2. Stonewalling: Going silent or walking away without resolving the issue can leave the other person feeling rejected and emotionally abandoned.

3. Personal attacks: Phrases like “you always” or “you never” criticize the person instead of the behavior, making meaningful conversation nearly impossible.

4. Breakup threats: Saying things like “I’m done” or “maybe we should split” in the heat of the moment can create lasting insecurity, even if you don’t mean it.

5. Keeping score: Bringing up old mistakes during a new argument shifts the focus away from solving the current problem and discourages openness.

6. Assuming motives: Telling your partner they “did it on purpose” turns the discussion into an argument over intentions, instead of finding a solution.
