SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
The pain of losing can feel much stronger than the excitement of winning. A new study found that when people make risky choices, such as in gambling, 2 forces are at work: the fear of losing and the regret of missing out. Researchers found loss aversion was the stronger motivator, but regret also plays a role – especially when people can see what they could have won. Women in the study appeared more likely to experience regret aversion, while men tended to show more evidence of “rejoicing,” the flip side of regret, where a person feels satisfaction about having made the right call.

“It: Welcome to Derry” will return for a second season on HBO and HBO Max, the network has announced. It: Welcome to Derry is inspired by the world first introduced in Stephen King’s 1986 novel “It.” The show is a prequel, with Season 1 exploring how an evil ancient entity first took the guise of Bill Skarsgard’s ‘Pennywise the Dancing Clown’. Season 2 is set in 1935 during the Great Depression and centers on “the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror,” according to an official synopsis.
For the past month, the box office has been driven by a global appetite for beloved Marvel characters and epic filmmaking on Imax 70mm with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey.” This holiday season, a similar trend is expected to occur with Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday” and Warner Bros./Legendary’s “Dune: Part Three.” The foundation is already being laid for an epic “Dunesday.” And by the way, after just 2 days of presales, Avengers: Doomsday was approximately 65% ahead of the pace set by the first 2 days of presales for “Brand New Day.”

OF THE DAY
A new Finnish study says your morning cup of coffee may be associated with a leaner body. Researchers at the University of Oulu studied more than 2,200 people and found that those who drank more coffee tended to have less total and visceral body fat and more muscle mass. Higher coffee intake was also linked to lower levels of certain amino acids associated with insulin resistance. However, the study only found an association – it doesn’t actually prove that coffee burns fat or builds muscle.
A cheap prescription drug is being called the “Ozempic of alcohol” because it can reduce the urge to drink. Naltrexone, which costs around $1.60 per pill in bulk, works by blocking opioid receptors in the brain, reducing the pleasurable effects of alcohol and, in turn, reducing cravings. The FDA has approved it for treating alcohol use disorder since 1994. Research suggests it can significantly reduce drinking for some people, while others use it to moderate their intake. Side effects can include nausea and headaches. Unlike some other medications, naltrexone doesn’t require complete abstinence from alcohol.

WEIRD NEWS
Parkour isn’t just for young thrill-seekers. In Singapore, coach Tan Shie Boon runs classes for adults in their 50s, 60s…and even 70s, teaching them how to balance, climb, vault over obstacles and, most importantly, fall safely. Inspired after helping a 64-year-old woman regain confidence walking without a support cart, Tan now has about 30 senior students. Some say the training has improved their strength, mobility and balance – even easing knee pain. Experts say adapted parkour can boost agility, coordination and confidence, potentially reducing the risk of falls among older adults. Classes are tailored to individual abilities, allowing participants to progress safely at their own pace.

THE LIST
In 2020, during COVID-19 lockdowns, many of us found ways to stay busy or get creative; but now, over 6 years after the start of the pandemic, many of the items we purchased out of panic or boredom are just collecting dust. Here are 6 things that you now officially have permission to sell, donate…or…well…just get rid of…
✓ Canned Goods — Those emergency cans of soup, beans and corn you bought in 2020 may be well past their prime. Low-acid canned foods generally last 2-5 years, so check those expiration dates.
✓ Hobby Kits — Sourdough starters, knitting kits, craft supplies… remember when we were all going to become crafty? If you haven’t touched them in 6 years, donate or sell them and free yourself from the guilt.
✓ Bulk Cleaning Products — You stocked up like the world was ending, but many cleaning products have a shelf life of around 2 years. Old disinfectants, detergents and sprays may have lost their effectiveness.
✓ Excess PPE — Masks, gloves, face shields and bottles of sanitizer may still be lurking everywhere. Keep what you realistically need and donate usable extras to shelters, clinics or other organizations.
✓ Puzzles & Board Games — They helped keep us entertained when leaving the house was basically a felony. If those puzzles and games haven’t been touched in years, donate them and let someone else have their turn.
✓ Exercise Equipment — That treadmill, stationary bike or collection of dumbbells may have been your big 2020 fitness plan. If it’s been gathering dust for 6 years, it’s probably time to admit the workout never happened…and let it go.
