Millions upon millions of workers deal with schedules that change dramatically from week to week, and new research says that instability comes with a health cost. A large study by US researchers found that workers with highly variable hours are more likely to experience health-related problems over the following year than those with steady schedules. For men, worsening health became more common as schedule volatility increased, rising from about 28% to 38%. For women, the impact appeared differently: they were more likely to reduce hours, miss work or leave the workforce for health reasons.

Mel Gibson is apologizing in the wake of backlash following his appearance at a fan event. When he took the stage for a Q&A at FanExpo Canada in Toronto on Saturday, he appeared to imitate the sign language interpreter standing on the platform. In the days since, social media users reacted to the apparent mockery, calling out his behavior as “disappointing” and “casually cruel.” In a statement, Gibson said: “Sometimes when you get pushed out…in a spotlight, your mind is all over the place, and sometimes spontaneous thoughtless idiocy is displayed.” He said: “There was no intended maliciousness,” and apologized “to anyone who was upset by it.”
Lori Loughlin is back on social media, 7 years after the college admissions scandal. She enlisted her “Full House” costars John Stamos, Jodie Sweetin, Candace Cameron Bure, Scott Weinger, Andrea Barber, and Dave Coulier to help her relaunch her Instagram profile on Monday, in a “Wake Up, San Francisco” bit. Loughlin and her now-estranged husband, Mossimo Giannulli, were indicted for fraud and bribery in 2019 as part of Operation Varsity Blues. They pleaded guilty to wire and mail fraud after being accused of paying $500,000 in bribes to secure their daughters admissions to the University of Southern California as recruits for its crew team, even though neither of the girls participated in the sport. The Sphere in Las Vegas is adding what it calls “new and expanded 4D effects” to its reimagining of the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz”. The film combines the Sphere’s vast screen with effects in the venue, including fire and a tornado that forms inside the room. The enhanced effects will include new animatronic winged monkeys that will fly over the audience; additional pyrotechnic fireworks; “Glinda Glitter”; new scented apples that will fall from the sky; and new scents that will be released into the venue during key scenes. The Sphere version of the film has grossed more than $450 million since it launched a year ago.

Dating just got a little more investigative. A new website called “Stud or Dud” lets users run background checks on potential dates using public records and other available information. Created by the company behind “PeopleFinders”, the subscription service searches for details including criminal records, finances, property, employment history and social media, then uses AI to flag potential “red” or “green” flags. But privacy experts warn the information can be inaccurate, outdated or misused by stalkers. The site admits that a clean report doesn’t guarantee someone is safe – and says users should still take normal precautions.
A Polish man could spend up to 8 years in prison after allegedly ordering hundreds of pizzas to random addresses across the country. Police say the orders used victims’ personal information and sometimes included disturbing threats. Restaurants also suffered significant losses, with one bogus order involving 300 pizzas costing more about US$10,000. Police raided the 23-year-old suspect’s home and seized electronic devices. Investigators are still trying to determine why he allegedly carried out the bizarre pizza campaign.

Can you imagine a world in which you place an online order from Amazon - let’s just say…while seated comfortably in the bathroom - and your item arrives almost before you’re even…umm…done? That’s pretty much the aim, although not stated in those rather crass terms, of Amazon’s expanded drone delivery service. Amazon plans to bring Prime Air to 500 US cities and towns by the end of the year. The drones can deliver packages weighing under 5 pounds within 30 minutes of an order being placed. Launches are expected soon around Chicago, Cleveland, Atlanta, Boise and Syracuse, with more locations to follow. Because apparently, waiting until tomorrow for your moisturizer is now unacceptable.
