SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

You may not need a long workout to get a big health boost. A new study found that just 3 minutes of intense exercise can trigger more changes in the body than 90 minutes of moderate exercise. Researchers had healthy young men either cycle moderately for 90 minutes or do six 30-second, all-out sprints with rest breaks. Blood tests showed the short, intense workout changed hundreds of proteins linked to things like heart health, metabolism and tissue repair. After 8 weeks, the effects were still showing up. Researchers stress that the study was small and doesn’t mean longer workouts aren’t beneficial. But it does suggest that, when it comes to exercise, intensity may matter as much as time.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Johnny Depp’s first sculpture, a 2-meter white bronze called “The Bunnyman”, will be unveiled at Turkish art fair Contemporary Istanbul, which runs tomorrow through the weekend. The sculpture is described as a “half-human, half-rabbit guardian carrying a ‘sword of truth’”. The work began with a drawing by Depp’s son Jack, aged around 5, which reminded Depp of his own recurring childhood dream. The figure has since appeared across Depp’s sketches, paintings, and prints.

Netflix has released a trailer for “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth,” in which Brad Pitt reprises his role as the stuntman first introduced in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The film will premiere in Imax theaters on Nov. 25, before hitting the streamer Dec. 23. Directed by David Fincher, it takes place 8 years after the events of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, when Booth has traded stunts for being a “studio fixer.” While Leo DiCaprio is not returning as Hollywood star ‘Rick Dalton’, Timothy Olyphant will reprise his original role of ‘James Stacy’. SCOOP OF THE DAY

EASY WAYS TO STOP YOUR PHONE’S BATTERY FROM AGING TOO FAST:

Thanks to recent price hikes, you might want to delay upgrading your phone, and instead, hold on to your current one a little longer. That’s easier to do these days, thanks to longer periods of software support. But one area you might be (rightly) concerned about is battery health. But there are steps you can take to improve your phone battery’s lifespan. Such as . . .

Keep your battery in the sweet spot: Try to keep your phone battery roughly between 30% and 80% charged. Avoiding frequent full discharges and not keeping it at 100% for long periods can help preserve battery capacity. But don’t stress about occasionally going outside that range.

Turn on smart charging: Use features such as Optimized Battery Charging, Charge Limit, or Battery Protection. They can delay or limit charging to 100%, reducing long-term battery wear.

Avoid excess heat: Heat is one of the biggest enemies of lithium-ion batteries. Keep your phone out of direct sunlight and hot places, and avoid charging it under a pillow or blanket.

Don’t use cheap chargers: Stick with reputable chargers and cables from the phone manufacturer or established third-party brands. Look for safety certifications such as UL, ETL or CE, rather than buying the cheapest option available.

Stop constantly closing background apps: Modern phones are designed to manage background apps efficiently, so you generally don’t need to swipe them away. Constantly closing and reopening apps can actually use more power, because the phone has to reload them.

WEIRD NEWS

“Star Trek” fans just boldly went where no fans had gone before – at least with their hands. To celebrate the show’s 60th anniversary, 1,188 fans gathered at London’s Science Museum on Star Trek Day (Sept. 8) to attempt a Guinness World Record for the most people performing the Vulcan salute simultaneously. A Guinness rep counted 934 people successfully holding the famous hand gesture for the required one minute, officially breaking the record. Even ‘Montgomery Scott’ himself, actor Martin Quinn, joined the “Live long and prosper” celebration. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2yvzsk94

THE LIST

MADE BY MEN…AND MOSTLY FOR MEN: (DAY 1 of 2)

Recently, a Reddit user asked: “What is a minor, everyday object…that feels like it was designed without considering how women actually navigate the world?” Here are some of the best answers, showing just how much people DON’T think about women when designing products…

➠ “Cars…Crash testing is done with dummies based on average male physical dimensions…Consequently, automobile collision fatality rates for women are significantly higher.”

➠ “Winter shoes. 99.9999999% of them are just ‘winter aesthetic,’ but have no features which actually protect against the cold…or help you remain stable on icy surfaces…The only model of comfy, warm, safe winter shoes available for women are UGGs and then (we) make fun of women who wear UGGs.”

➠ “All hand tools are designed for the average hand size and upper-body strength of a man. This makes it harder for some women to use tools and do DIY.”

➠ “How few stalls there are in women’s bathrooms. Urinals don’t take up much space, but the men’s rooms have the same square footage…Women’s need at least 10 stalls, especially in theaters.”

➠ “I always wonder why my dresses zip up the back and it’s hard to reach… almost as if dresses are designed so that you have to rely on someone else to help you get dressed?!”

➠ “Backpacks for daily use. I have yet to see one with a strap that actually accounts for both chest size and is low enough.”

➠ “Office temperatures. The standard set for the average man’s comfort back in the day is too cold for most women. We bundle up year-round and use…space heaters because the men can’t be bothered to use a fan.”

➠ “Bars. If there is no hook under the bar or table for a purse, I know a woman was not involved.”

➠ “Firm mattresses being the default in hotels. If you are curvy, where would your hip/butt/boobs go when you lay down on a hard surface with no give?”

➠ Pockets (or lack of sufficient pockets, to be precise).”
