SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Want a paws-itive outlook on life? Get a cat. A new study of 93 countries found that nations with more cats tend to report higher levels of happiness. But there’s a bizarre catch: countries with higher exposure to Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite commonly associated with cats, tend to be LESS happy. Researchers say wealth may explain the contradiction. In richer countries, cats are more likely to be pampered indoor pets, with commercial food and regular veterinary care, reducing their exposure to the parasite. Happiness scores analyzed from the World Population Review revealed that feline counts and national joy are positively correlated. And wealth aside, previous studies have shown that pets decrease loneliness and foster emotional bonds that help with mood swings. The U.S. has the world’s largest cat population, with 74.2 million felines.

James Patterson is teaming up with Arnold Schwarzenegger for a new novel that marks Schwarzenegger’s debut as a novelist. The actor, bestselling author, former Governor of California and 7-time Mr. Olympia will co-write “The Protector”, due out next fall. It follows a Catholic priest and military veteran who’s taken the helm at a parish plagued by “criminals threatening the community he’s vowed to protect, even as his courageous actions endanger his life, and reveal clues to his mysterious past.” The publisher calls it “a thrill ride with a fascinating new hero.”
Jessica Biel has joined the cast of the upcoming film “Playmates.” Biel will star opposite previously announced cast members Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Pullman, and Indiana Elle. The official logline for Playmates says: “Elle, a 13-year-old know-it-all who considers the Playboy Mansion her second home, meets Anna, one of 7 hopefuls vying to be Playmate of the Month. The 2 form an unlikely friendship and try to help each other get what the other wants most, a magazine cover and a boy.” Biel will play the wife of Hugh Hefner in the film, who is herself a former Playmate.

Fall brings colorful leaves — and usually, a fresh round of sniffles. But is that runny nose caused by seasonal allergies or a common cold? The 2 share several symptoms, making them tricky to tell apart. Allergies are triggered by things like pollen and mold, while colds are caused by viruses. One clue: allergies often cause itchy, watery eyes, while colds are more likely to bring a sore throat, body aches and fatigue. Most colds clear up with rest and fluids, while allergy sufferers may benefit from antihistamines and nasal sprays.

WEIRD NEWS
Most adults call their mom about once a week, according to surveys in the US and UK. But if you’re wondering whether that’s enough, experts say there’s no magic number. A Toronto psychologist says the ideal frequency is whatever feels meaningful and manageable for both people. Some families may enjoy daily calls, while others are happy checking in monthly. The key is quality over quantity. When you can’t visit in person, a good phone conversation can help maintain a close bond and provide emotional support. A 2010 study of girls between 7-12 found that those who spoke with their mothers over the phone saw their levels of the “love hormone” oxytocin rise significantly and their cortisol stress hormone levels drop.
