SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Children who blink more may have also have more brainpower. A study of 113 children ages 3-6 in Japan found that kids who blinked more frequently performed better on a test of cognitive flexibility. The test involved sorting cards by color, then suddenly switching to sorting them by shape. Researchers also monitored brain activity and found that frequent blinking was linked with greater activity in the brain region involved in attention and executive function. These can be strong predictors of academic and social competence and health. Researchers say blink rate could eventually become a simple, inexpensive way to study developing brains – although more research is needed.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Dan Aykroyd has revealed that he and his “Ghostbusters” co-star Bill Murray once stole 2 police motorcycles for their impromptu Central Park joyride. He wrote on IG: “One night shooting GB2, we appropriated 2 fully equipped police motorcycles from the movie’s motor pool and spent an hour chasing each other around a closed Central Park with full lights and sirens.” Aykroyd clarified that the joyride didn’t get the actors into trouble, quipping: “No consequences. After all, we were Ghostbusters.”

Sylvester Stallone says he abused steroids and struggled with bulimia while preparing for one of his famous ‘Rocky Balboa’ films. In a New York Times profile, Stallone admitted he cycled steroids and endured the eating disorder at the height of his fame in the 1980s, revealing he struggled in his relationship with his body, “Then it became an obsession.” Stallone said he would do a 6-week steroid cycle that he viewed as mandatory to portray boxer Rocky Balboa and Vietnam War vet ‘John Rambo’. He did not specify which type of performance-enhancing drugs he used.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day”, the highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office, and the third-highest grossing worldwide, is getting a re-release. Deadline says sources are buzzing that the movie, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, will have extra footage that includes, but is not limited to, Rosario Dawson’s character ‘Claire Temple’. No word yet as to when the re-release will happen. The news comes in the wake of Disney posting some serious cash this past weekend with the re-release of the Russo brothers’ “Avengers Endgame: Encore”.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A food expert is saying you should consider washing your bananas before putting them on the counter. The peel can carry tiny fruit-fly eggs, which are too small to see, and can hatch as the bananas ripen. A quick rinse under cool running water, especially around the stems, may help remove them. It’s not a guarantee against fruit flies, but it could prevent some unwanted kitchen stowaways. Dry the bananas afterward so excess moisture doesn’t speed up spoilage.

Your cat may act like it doesn’t need you, but that independence has an expiration date. Veterinarians say healthy adult cats can generally be left alone for 8-12 hours. Kittens under 4 months should be alone no more than about 4 hours, while older cats may need more frequent check-ins because of health issues. Cats can survive 24-48 hours alone with dry food and fresh water, but vets say that’s a survival limit – not a vacation plan. Separation stress can also lead to excessive meowing, destruction or accidents outside the litter box.
