SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Being single doesn’t necessarily mean being unhappy. A new study tracked 2,930 never-married German singles for 11 years and found that roughly 90% across 3 age groups reported above-average life satisfaction. While feelings about being single and sexual satisfaction varied, overall happiness remained remarkably steady. Most participants still had at least some desire for a romantic partner, but are also perfectly capable of enjoying life without one. Researchers found that the groups who reported the most satisfaction generally had the healthiest personality profiles, perhaps going against certain stereotypes that say single-ness automatically equates to unhappiness.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
It looks like there won’t be a Conner family reunion on Roseanne Barr’s new show, because John Goodman has already turned down an appearance. Barr is returning to TV with “Meemaw” after getting fired in 2018 over racist social media posts. But according to her, her former on-screen husband won’t be popping up at all. Quote: “My son called Goodman and asked him to do a cameo on Meemaw and he declined.” Roseanne’s revelation came after she was asked by a reporter how she gets along with Goodman and Laurie Metcalf, who starred alongside her in “Roseanne.” She said she’s not in contact with either of them.
“Glee” is officially coming back! Disney+ and Hulu have handed the reboot a series order, a move that has been in the cards for some time with co-creator Ryan Murphy regularly discussing its potential return over the last few months. Glee, which won 6 Emmys, including for Murphy and Lynch as well as guest stars like Neil Patrick Harris and Gwyneth Paltrow, currently streams on Hulu and Disney. It also draws around 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, highlighting its current relevance. The original show ran on Fox between 2009 and 2015.
DID YA KNOW!?
Did You Know... The Sahara Desert wasn't always a desert. Thousands of years ago, it was covered with grasslands, lakes, and rivers where animals such as crocodiles and hippos once lived.

OF THE DAY
What is a “retronym”? It has been described as a new way to describe an old term, after a new development makes differentiation necessary. Huh? Well, here are some examples…
Snail
mail: It was called “mail” until e-mail.
(A shorter version
has also been suggested: “smail.”)
Land
line: It was just a regular telephone line until cell phones became
popular.
Coca-Cola Classic: The word “classic” was added in 1985 after the release of New Coke, which flopped. (“Regular Coke” could be considered a retronym as well…)
World War I: Originally called “The Great War” and “The War to End All Wars” …until World War II.
Corn on the cob: Referred to as “corn” until canned and frozen corn became popular in the 1920s.
Cloth diaper: The invention of the disposable diaper in 1949 created the need for this term.
Hardcover book: All books were hardcover until the 1930s, when paperbacks were introduced.
Silent films: Called “films” until the talkies took over in the late 1920s.
Organic
farming: How farming was done for millennia before chemical
fertilizers and pesticides were introduced.
Vinyl
records, or vinyl: Until CDs, records were just records.
Broadcast
television: Needed since the introduction of cable and satellite TV.
Acoustic
guitar: From the 1600s until the 1930s, they were just “guitars.”
Then the electric guitar came along…
Hard copy: To distinguish a printed, paper document from an e-mailed one.
Field
hockey: The original “hockey,” it’s still called that in
countries where ice hockey, created later, isn’t as popular.
George
H.W. Bush: He rarely used his middle initials until his son (George
W.) became president.
Offline: What computer users refer to as anything not computer related, such as “outside.”

THE LIST
GEN Z’S “NOT NICE” DATING TRENDS:
Gen Z has a whole new vocabulary for dating, but relationship psychologist Dr. Orion Taraban says a lot of these supposedly modern trends are just old romantic mistakes with fancy new names. Here are some of them…
➠ Shrekking: Dating someone you consider less attractive in hopes they’ll appreciate you more. The catch? They might still dump you for someone they find more attractive.
➠ Frankensteining: Trying to reshape a partner’s appearance or personality into your ideal mate. Taraban says it rarely works.
➠ Clear Coding: Arriving at a first date with a checklist of qualities you want in a partner. It’s also called “dating with intention,” although treating a date like a job interview may not help you get “hired”.
➠ Friendfluence: Bringing friends along to help evaluate a potential romantic partner. In other words, a double date with a panel of judges.
➠ Benching: Keeping someone on the romantic sidelines as a backup option while you explore other possibilities. Think of it as dating’s version of having a spare tire.
➠ Wanderlove:
Falling for someone while traveling or on vacation. The idea is that
people may relax and act more naturally when they assume they’ll
never see each other again.
➠ Wildflowering: Ditching the rigid
dating checklist and letting romance unfold naturally. This is
considered one of the healthier approaches to finding love.
➠ Body Count: Asking someone how many sexual partners they’ve had. Taraban calls the question ridiculous and suggests people may not answer honestly anyway.
➠ Situationship: A romantic relationship that never quite becomes official. Despite the lack of a clear label, Taraban says Gen Z tends to prefer more structure in relationships.
➠ Dating Out of Your League: Taraban says many women on dating apps pursue a small percentage of older, wealthier and more successful men. This can leave people competing for partners who may not be realistic matches.
➠ The $225 Date: The average date now costs a whopping $225. Taraban argues that expensive outings and high expectations can make it harder for people to get together in the first place.
➠ The Romance Recession: This refers to reports that younger adults are having less sex, with one-third of men and one-sixth of women under 30 reporting no sex in a given year. Between dating costs, endless choices and complicated expectations, finding a partner may be harder than ever.
