SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Many people of a certain age were warned as kids not to sit too close to the TV, because it would supposedly harm our eyes. Now, in a slightly different spin, experts are warning that too much screen time “significantly” increases the risk of a certain eye problem among children. In a new analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers examined the effect of digital screens on the risk of developing nearsightedness, or myopia. They evaluated dozens of studies involving more than 330,000 people, looking for possible links to the amount of time screens were viewed, including devices such as smartphones, tablets, game consoles, computers and televisions. Their conclusion? Those who spent more than one hour on digital screens were more likely to be diagnosed with near-sightedness — and that likelihood increased for each hour of screen time per day, up to 4 hours. The researchers suggest this might mean it would be wise to limit screen time to less than one hour per day for children.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

The History Channel is doubling down on stars. It has ordered a slew of new series featuring the likes of David Duchovny, Henry Winkler and Ving Rhames. This is on top of a new show with “American Pickers’” Mike Wolfe and a documentary from LeBron James. “Secrets Declassified with David Duchovny” is hosted by “The X-Files” star and will reveal the latest evidence behind some of the government’s most secretive activities. The 10-part series will premiere April 4. “Hazardous History with Henry Winkler” is hosted by the “Happy Days” star, and covers the dangerous pastimes, practices and products you would never see today but were once a part of everyday Americana.

HBO unveiled the trailer for “The Last of Us” Season 2 at SXSW on Saturday, offering the most extensive look at the new season of the acclaimed drama series yet. Based on the video game franchise of the same name, the latest installment will follow Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s ‘Joel’ and ‘Ellie’ 5 years after the events of Season 1, where they have now settled down in Jackson, Wyoming. Season 2 will see the pair drawn into conflict with both each other and a world that’s even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left. Among the newcomers to the series are Kaitlyn Dever, Danny Ramirez and Jeffrey Wright, plus Catherine O’Hara is a guest-starring role. The season will be 7 episodes long, and will premiere April 13. “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo has landed her next movie role, in an action thriller from the team behind “John Wick”. The ‘Elphaba’ actor has joined the cast of “Karoshi”, a legal thriller with a samurai twist. The term karoshi refers to someone dying unexpectedly from being overworked, and the movie will take place in a Japanese version of New York City. Erivo will star alongside “The Recruit” star Teo Yoo and “1883’s” Isabel May, while John Wick director Chad Stahelski will produce. Production is set to begin in June, with Takashi Doscher directing.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did you know almost half the world's population watched both the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup games? In 2010, the FIFA World Cup in South Africa was shown in every country and territory on the globe, including Antarctica and the Arctic Circle. That meant a record-breaking 3.2 billion people around the world watched the game in their homes. Four years later, the FIFA World Cup in Brazil drew the same astounding number of viewers.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Apple has announced 2 new iPad upgrades to be released this week.

MIT researchers say they have developed “smart” clothes that can tell you when you’re getting sick. The researchers invented a ‘fiber computer’, and networked several of them into a garment. Created in partnership with the American military, the clothing, containing the group of elastic fiber computers, could monitor health conditions and physical activity, alerting the wearer to potential risks in real time. The developers explain that their invention is comfortable and machine washable, and unlike body-monitoring systems known as “wearables”, these fabrics have the advantage of staying in close contact with large areas of the body, and therefore can provide more accurate health and physical data. Each ‘smart’ fiber computer includes a Bluetooth communication system to send data wirelessly to a device such as a smartphone, which can be read by a user.

FUN FACT FOR YOU:
Share this with your friends... they'll think you're really smart!

✓ It would take less than 6 months to get to the Moon by car at 60mph (95km/h).

✓ Mickey Mouse’s dog “Pluto” was named after the planet, not the other way around.

✓ ‘Mulan’ has the highest kill count of any Disney character, including villains.

✓ Even though smoking is banned there, ashtrays are mandatory on every plane. This is for safe disposal in case someone breaks the law.

WEIRD NEWS

Some words just flat-out SOUND funny. And researchers at the University of Warwick in the UK have determined which are the 5 funniest-sounding. They showed nearly 5,000 randomly selected words to over 800 online participants, and determined that the funniest and wackiest words are, in order: “booty,” “tit,” “booby,” “hooter,” “nitwit,” “twit,” “waddle,” “tinkle,” “bebop,” “egghead,” “ass,” and “twerp”. Younger participants (under 32) were most amused by words like “goatee,” “joint,” and “gangster.” And older respondents found words like “squint,” “jingle,” “burlesque,” and “pong,” to be the most comical. And perhaps not surprisingly, men found words with a sexual association (like “orgy” and “bondage”) to be the funniest.
