SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Getting together with friends this weekend? We all know how important friends are, but a survey released last year shows just how much. Among the findings: 57% said they want to see their friends at least 4 times per month. One third don’t get to socialize as much as they’d like. Three out of 4 agreed that a good night with friends is as helpful as a therapy session, and two-thirds feel less stressed when they’re hanging out. Half the time spent with friends is catching up on life, and more than half said they have meaningful conversations during these get-togethers.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

J-Lo is moving to a new block. More than 2 months after finalizing her divorce from Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez has purchased a new $18 million home near Los Angeles, People reports. Her new chapter comes less than a year after she and Affleck quietly placed their $61 million Beverly Hills home up for sale, and the ‘Jenny From the Block’ singer started looking at properties soon after. Affleck closed a deal for a 5-bedroom Los Angeles estate for $20.5 million last July.

Zendaya will star as legendary singer Ronnie Spector in the upcoming biopic “Be My Baby”, to be directed by Oscar winner Barry Jenkins. Variety quotes sources as saying that the “Mufasa: The Lion King” director and Zendaya had been looking to work together for some time, and have agreed on a version of Spector’s story that will tell what the singer’s life with troubled producer Phil Spector felt like, rather than a traditional “cradle to the grave” biopic. Deadline says that before her passing, Spector was an executive producer on the film, and hand-selected Zendaya to play her.

“Adolescence” has already set a major viewership record after its second weekend of streaming on Netflix. After opening with a massive 24.3 million views in its first 4 days, Adolescence was the most watched title on Netflix the week of March 17-23 with another 42 million views, taking the show to 66.3 million views — more than any other Netflix limited series has achieved within a 2 week period — and the UK crime story managed that within just 11 days.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A Dutch city is broadcasting an underwater livestream of fish swimming through a lock system, and those watching can click a virtual “fish doorbell” to tell workers in Utrecht that the fish need to be let through a hatch. The livestream was set up 5 years ago, and since then, millions of viewers all around the world have worked together to help ensure these fish finish their springtime migration, so they can…uh…do that thing they do once they’re done swimming upstream… Some viewers have even sent fan mail, telling the local municipality that they are happy to help, and besides, they find watching the fish to be “relaxing”. Just like frustrated commuters, birds develop “road rage” due to traffic noise, says a new study. Researchers found that native species in the Galápagos Islands are changing their behavior as a result of cars and trucks. Birds frequently exposed to vehicles showed heightened levels of aggression in the study, published in the journal Animal Behaviour. It examined the impact of vehicle noise pollution on Galápagos yellow warblers, a common songbird on the archipelago off the coast of Ecuador. The birds were seen to increase the maximum frequencies of their songs during noise experiments, and if traffic noise still interfered with their singing, they were seen to exhibit increased physical aggression, which the scientists called “an appropriate response.”

WEIRD NEWS

A scientific professor says that in order to help save Earth, we should drop pronouns and land acknowledgements from email signatures – more or less. Western University’s Joshua M. Pearce wrote in a column for The Conversation that, as many are aware, sending emails is an everyday activity, but it comes with an environmental cost. Emails use energy, and that energy often comes from burning fossil fuels. He calculated that the extra characters required in using those 2 relatively new additions to email signatures in Canada results in enough resulting carbon emissions to contribute to the death of one person per year. And after all, since we tend to email the same people repeatedly, most of the content in email signatures is redundant. One solution he put forward is to replace email signatures with a hyperlinked name, which would lead to additional information on the sender.
