SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Playing smartphone video games may be better for mental health than mindfulness apps. A 2022 study by University College London and The University of Bath found that despite the obvious irony associated with using a smartphone to quell anxiety, tests showed that those who played a shape fitting game after work reported feeling significantly more relaxed and in control at the end of the week compared to those who used meditation apps. Researchers said that games check off all 4 factors associated with post-work recovery: they are generally relaxing, they provide players the chance to learn a new skill, they provide a fun distraction from the pressures of everyday life, and they allow the player to feel completely in control.

DID YA KNOW!?
Did you know Einstein's brain was stolen when he died? When Nobel Prize-winning physicist Albert Einstein passed away on April 18, 1955, he left behind specific instructions. He didn’t want his body to be “worshipped” or his brain to be studied so he wished to be cremated. However, Thomas Harvey, the pathologist who was on call when Einstein died didn't quite respect Einstein’s wishes. Instead, he stole Einstein's brain. When Einstien’s family found out, they didn’t press charges or quite object to the theft and Harvey was able to keep the brain in two jars in his basement.

OF THE DAY
According to a survey, men lie 3 times as often as women.
For years, we’ve been told that red wine is a healthier choice than white, because it is rich in resveratrol – that’s an antioxidant than can reduce inflammation, lowering your risk of heart disease and cancer. But according to new research from the Medical School at Brown University, not so fast. In their study of 96,000 test participants, they “found no differences in the association between red or white wine consumption and overall cancer risk, challenging the common belief that red wine is healthier than white wine.” The researchers did point out a few caveats, though: For one, drinking white wine is linked to a 22% increased risk of skin cancer. That could be because white wine is more likely to be consumed outdoors during hot weather. The other: Their conclusions only seem to apply to men. The researchers said that white wine “was significantly associated with an increased risk of cancer among women.” In the past, red wine has also been linked to better gut health, younger-looking skin and even increased fertility.

WEIRD NEWS
Police in Michigan were called to a motel to help secure an unusual piece of left-behind property. The Cheboygan Police Department said cops were called to a Pine Rivers motel room when housekeeping staff found a live alligator in a recently-vacated room. According to the manager, “When my nephew looked under the bed, Wally was there. He was a real friendly gator, so I didn’t feel real scared. He let the police officers hold him and all that.” Police determined the 3-foot gator belongs to a man who takes exotic animals to schools for demonstrations. The owner was contacted and said he knew Wally was missing, but didn’t realize he had been left at the motel.
